Overview

The US-1800 audio interface from Tascam offers a high amount of inputs for a minimum amount of cash. The US-1800 features up to 16 inputs and four outputs that are transmitted to your Mac or Windows computer over a high-speed USB 2.0 connection. There are a total of eight XLR microphone inputs with phantom power and 60 decibels of clean gain, as well as six balanced line inputs, stereo digital I/O and MIDI in/out. Also Included with the US-1800 is Cubase LE5 workstation software from Steinberg. This 48-track audio workstation includes must-have features like automation, plug-ins, mixing, editing and MIDI tracks.

US-1800 rackmountable 16x4 channel interface
TASCAM's US-1800 packs 8 mic, 6 line and two digital inputs into a single rack unit, more inputs than most interfaces in its price class. The 16-in / 4-out interface works with nearly any recording software from budget to pro, including Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools. It’s compact enough to carry to live gigs, or mount it in a rack in your studio.

In addition to the digital input and output, a MIDI input and output is included for interfacing with synths and drum machines.

Full-featured inputs
Eight microphone inputs are provided right on the front panel for easy access. Phantom power is available for condenser microphones, and plenty of gain is available for recording virtually any source. Also on the front panel is a pair of 1/4" inputs. Each of these can be switched to instrument level for direct recording of your guitar or bass.

A direct monitor path is available during recording to prevent the delays that can occur when recording to computer. This allows the musician to hear the input directly to the output without any delay so that timing isn't distracted by echos.
A total of six balanced line inputs can be attached using the front and rear panel jacks. A set of balanced line outputs are provided to connect to monitors, and a S/PDIF digital input and output is provided for use with high-end synths and processing gear. A stereo 1/4" headphone jack is also provided for monitoring.

Cubase LE5 Included
Included with the US-1800 is a copy of Cubase LE5, a 48-track workstation application with the features to create polished productions. VST plug-in support, automated mixing and MIDI tracks allow you to craft large productions without adding any other software.

If you want to use your own software, the US-1800 supports most Mac and Windows software such as Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools.

I bought this thing because it looked like it was some insane equipment for some minor coin. And for the most part it is. You have enough room to plug in two guitars, a mic, an entire drumset, a keyboard, and a midi controller all at the same time. Trouble is that while it has all of this capability, the quality of the recording is far lower than I was expecting. I have yet to be able to record anything without developing popping and crackling. My buddy brought his interface over to test, and it worked great. I am slightly disappointed, as now it takes some serious time in FL to clean the recordings up.

Hi all. I almost never write reviews, but this one is to protect others from my experience. I bought the US-1800 about 7 months ago. It was a great unit, very good price for all the inputs it has. I used it a few times to record live shows, and it's been in my studio rack ever since. I used it again about a week ago, and all I got was pops and his from the outputs. Also, the device was not recognized by my MacBook Pro (2.9GHz i7, 16GB RAM), the same computer I recorded with with no problems. I uninstalled and re-installe the drivers, but still no luck. Tascam told me they could fix it, but their warranty covers parts for 1 year but labor for only 90 days. They told me that labor was $90.00 an hour. Basically, it is going to be cheaper for me to buy a new unit than get this one fixed. When the unit was operational is was pretty good. A few connectivity problems here and there, but usually a power on/off and USB cable disconnect and connect would fix it. I would ONLY buy this unit with the Pro Coverage from Guitar Center. Even then you only have two years of coverage, and from the internet posts I read very few units lasts longer than that. This thing is a great deal if you're a gambler...

Don't waste your money

By Jeremy

from Marietta, GA

I bought one in January of 2014.... I only used it twice and the second time I used it, it broke. Tascam told me to send it in for repair and so that's what I did. They called me after about 2 weeks and said it would cost me $100 to fix the problem....(Cost of the Labor). With what I paid for shipping and the labor cost, that was half of what I paid for the unit, and only got to use it twice. The lay out on the product and the price of the product were great, and I was almost willing to spend the money to get it fixed until the lady hung up the phone on me TWICE. Tascam has clearly got some costumer service issues to work out. DON'T WASTE THE MONEY.......

Great for the coin. Minor monitoring issue.

By Dan

from Charleston, SC

Great product for the price point. PRO:The interface side itself works great even on a older laptop. No pops or cracks. Plenty of inputs to get everything you need in a once. Recorded scratch tracks for my band last night with the entire Drumsset and other sources wired in. CONS: The monitoring seems to be a bit to desire. The latecy is not problem at all. The problem is mainly with the level. You can mix the play back from the computer with control over the live inputs which works great. The problem is the level compared to the gain you need to get a non-distored signal. I can get the non-distored signal in fine but then you can hardly hear the main input over the headphones using the monitor out turned all the way up. Perphaps that is large a problem of the headphone amp I'm using just isn't strong enough. Overall I'm happy with interface for what it cost. If I could add one thing in would be an on-board compressor I could assign to to inputs so that I could get stronger signal without distorsion when a musician really hits the mics hard.

Best Deal For A Project Studio

By ARCHIE COCKE

from Lockport, IL

I've used Tascam quite extensively as audio engineer at work and they always hit the sweet spot between cost and quality. When I had the time (finally) put my own studio together at home, I caught this unit on sale for $199! I knew it would be about 5 months before I would be at the "wiring" stage, but the value was so ridiculous I couldn't pass it up. Now that I've had some shakedown time and I've really given it some critical tests, I couldn't be much happier. I use Pro Tools 10 for almost all of my work and it likes the US-1800. You do need to know how to configure hardware within PT, it's not just plug & play. But as long as your a confident user, this is a powerful addition in your studio. I'm a prog rocker with one of those obnoxious 10-piece kits. I like to close-mic every drum. I can't stand cheap-sounding recordings. I don't settle for "just okay". But with a little bit of experience, a bit of trial and error, and relatively little money, my kit sounds huge, fat, punchy, and clean! I'm going straight to 13 tracks at once and I still have a 14th to spare. I'm considering buying a 2nd unit for remote recording or doubling my I/O.

Effcicient and Affordable Interface

By Raymond Galindo

from San Diego, CA

A little bit tricky to be set on either pc or mac in my case pc. I had seem comments saying talking about connectivity. Actually this machine works fine but takes some knowledge about configuring your sound systems. But once that is done it works just fine. I did have the need to install any other drivers than the ones TASCAM provides. I will say if you are not very inclined computer person maybe you need a different interface. On the other hand if you follow the instructions well and take advice from many of those videos on youtube you will get a good piece of equipment in your hands.

Exactly what i wanted!

By raul pacheco

from alpharetta GA

This interface is aswome! its very durable and all the features on it work great! I was about to spend 500$ on a similar interface when i saw this one in the very back of the store, almost hidden. I asked how it is and how much and i honestly wasn't sure if the quality was going to be good for that price, but man was i wrong! I love it. the only reason why i gave this 4 stars is because i just found out that it is almost 100$ less online than in the store, which doesn't seem fair to me. but i did get the 2 year warranty so it almost equals out! i recommend this to anyone!

Pretty good box!

By Bob Herrera

I take care of 4 Radio stations (1am 3fm considered small market) we have an appetite for producing high performance radio ad's but don't have the million dollar budget buy have adobe audition 1.5 and high performance consoles in the studios for the price the 1800 went beyond our expectations our clients are very happy we want version cs6 so we can utilize the aiso drivers 1.5 does not have for more capabilities in the multitrack world did not buy from GC but price is locked in everywhere and we plan on a 3rd 1800 to marry with our Ramsa production console we got so for the price and recording needs the Tascam 1800US should do you some pretty good justice for your basic multichannel recording needs :)

NO MAC

By brad hunter

from Malad, ID

I thought this was going to be an awesome system for the price and the reviews on here were good so i bought it today. I get home and find out that after installing the driver (that i had to download since im working on a mac mini with no cd drive) that pro tools will not load now because it can not find the audio device. After looking online for hours i still dont have a solution and it seems like a lot of people are having the same issue. If your running windows you can set your latency to the slowest possible and that will let it run but then you are getting the worst possible out of your new equipment. Spend the extra money and get a decent rig.

Amazing

By Pamela Pelletier

from Houghton, NY

I was very hesitant to buy this product because i had looked at the reviews and things weren't looking too promising. I went ahead and bought it anyways (along with a warranty) because i needed something to record my drum set with. I had previously purchased a presonus fp10 off of ebay-worst choice ever. I couldnt get the thing to connect to any computers that i tried, and the software seemed to be getting in he way of the actual performance of he item. Anyways, I go this and have owned it for a couple months. I have used it in about 5 drum covers now and have had zero problems with it. It was very easy to set up and it is super easy to use. I would highly recommend this! Good job Tascam!

Not easy to set up.

By Robert Savino

from Bergenfield NJ

Product appeared to be have been "repackaged", judging by the condition of the box and the not so pristine CD's that came with it. Hardware works fine. I would give that 5 stars. Software is an another issue - almost a total nightmare. It took several weeks of my spare time to get this thing up and running, and I have been a computer tech since 1971. The TASCAM 1800 communicated with my ancient PC running XP and old Audacity perfectly. Audacity could see all 16 input channels. Very cool. However, I needed to run it on a HP laptop with Vista. I could not get Audacity running on top of Vista to see the Tascam. I believe Vista places a lot of restrictions on how sound and wave files are handled. I decided not to go this route. So I decided to use the enclosed Cubase -major learning curve for me. Cubase is the greatest piece of software ever written that can be all things to all people. It has features that I will never use. All I want to do is make a multi-track recording of my band. It was a major undertaking just to get the Cubase licensing working on this laptop. I loaded the TASCAM drivers and I still could not get Cubase to talk to the TASCAM drivers and see 16 input channels. Turns out, you need 3rd party ASIO drivers to get Cubase and the TASCAM driver software to talk to each other. After much aggravation, I finally got Cubase to see the 16 input channels. So, basically, ASIO drivers reside between Cubase and TASCAM and form the interface between the two. THIS IS NOT WELL DOCUMENTED AND CAN BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND FRUSTRATING. The front two 1/4" connectors for guitar/unbalanced line work great. We plugged guitar and bass in here and they work just fine. Bear in mind that the line-in connectors on the rear are "balanced". Make sure you understand what that means. I had to make up a special cable that converts female XLR to 1/4" TRS for my keyboard player. His Behringer keyboard amp has a balanced line out, and now we have that working. I wish this unit had two more "unbalanced" line-ins - that would be handy. Gee, most bands have more than one guitar! Well, I finally managed to get all my band mates together and we laid down some tracks. Very cool. Then I started to have some latency problems because we were experiencing a lot of glitches during playback and the ASIO software was complaining. I had to reboot several times to get everything working again when I added more busses and tracks. Then the laptop overheated and shut itself off. Not so cool. I am not going to waste any more of my band mates' time with this fiasco. So now I am faced with getting this working on another computer. It's just as well. The HP laptop probably didn't have enough horsepower to run Cubase, anyway. I can't wait to experience the licensing problems for a second time. Folks, do yourselves a favor, get a standalone recording system that comes with an internal hard drive. You will only be dealing with one software vendor. Respectfully, Bob S.
