Overview

The Tascam US-122 MKII seamlessly continues the worldwide success of its predecessors, the US-122 and US-122L, offering improved recording quality from a USB MIDI interface further reduced in size. Since it doesn't require an additional power supply, this portable audio interface is perfect for creating stereo recordings with a laptop computer wherever you go. Or use it to substitute the on-board soundcard of your Windows or Macintosh computer to play back music or video files with better sound quality.

XLR microphone inputs with switchable phantom power and high-quality preamps are the basis for good-sounding recordings while input signals can be listened to by headphones with zero latency. Line-level sources or an instrument can be connected as well. The Tascam US-122 MKII has a mono switch, one MIDI input and one MIDI output, and a line output on RCA connectors.

The US-122MKII USB MIDI interface supports sample rates up to 24-bit/96kHz at resolution. While commercial audio CDs are produced at 44.1 kHz/16-bit, this interface offers you more than double the sample rate which means more detail for your recordings. (If you need four instead of two channels of simultaneous recording or playback and an additional digital I/O, have a look at the Tascam.

I've had this for about 8 months and I have recorded multiple good quality songs with it. It has a durable build! You don't have much control over the qaulity. In fact, if you don't have a pretty high end microphone or instrument to use with it, it wont sound great. It has a ton of hiss. It does it with multiple different mics and instruments, so i assume it is the intrerface. If it werent for creativity and good software this probably wouldnt be great for someone who is experienced in making quality recordings. As for me this is what I learned on and it is great for that because it is easy to use and it is simple. It has good features but is still very limited. If it's your first one, and you have a tight budget, I would suggest it. However, you might quickly find yourself wanting an upgrade!

Virtues-(one star each) .Aside from the chintzy knobs it feels well built .Layout is excellent .Sound quality is good** Vices .Headphone amp seems weak to me (I get more level of my PC) .Questionable Quality Control** **I just brought this home and tried it with a condenser and an acoustic with a pickup plugged in together(Mic on the L channel, Guitar on the R). With the mic in and the phantom on the Guitar gets mad hiss. With the mic unplugged "OR" the phantom power off the guitar input gets nice and quiet "BUT" has a slight buzz at the fading end of sustained input. The only way I got a pure and quiet signal from the Line In's(left or right) was to drive it as a line input(no HiZ on the R in) with nothing consuming phantom power. I did however, update the drivers and firmware fresh out the box before giving the stock "wares" a chance. Not always a good idea as the latest driver isn't always the greatest driver. therefore I will be swapping this out tomorrow in hopes that it's just defective because in the end I do like it. -this review will be updated to a 1 or 4 star pending the outcome of the swap.

Stops working after only 10 minutes...

By Joseph Azael Garza Valdez

from Cabot, VT

I bought this in a bundle that included a condenser mic and a free trial version of Cubase. I get decent sound quality plugging my bass directly or via D.I. as well as the mic for vocals, but after a few minutes of being plugged in (around 5) I start getting clicking noises that increase to the point where all I get is buzz (sound as if the battery was dying on a pedal or active bass). I tried contacting the "tech support" at Tascam and all they said was to remove all software/drivers and re-install. It didn't fix a thing and really left a bad experience with me. I still use it, but I have to unplug the USB cable every 8 minutes; if I were trying to record in a home studio I would definitely give it 1 star,,,

TASCAM US-122MKII USB 2.0 2-channel Audio/MIDI Interface

By Roger Morton

from st Petersburg,FL

Download the latest software/firmware updates from Tascam. I bought this as an interface for a laptop recording/performance rig that is in the process of being put together. To check its capabilities I hooked it up in place of another interface to my home computer and DAW. Tascam has come through again. I like that the pres are knobs instead of sliders, there are as many in/outs as I could wish for so I can use my synths as triggers with the MIDI I/O, there are balanced mic inputs and line in's, USB 2.0 and RCA stereo outputs. Nothing else to ask for there really to make a simple set-up. The function is flawless from the inputs and they are as colorless as you'd hope for. I don't have dog ears but it seems to be of a better quality than what I have been using. I have a decent computer with Windows 7 and it allows monitoring without latency or playback coloration through either monitors or headphones. Built to seeming mil-spec Tascam (part of Teac) knows recording, they've been at it a long time. This interface is unsurpassed at its price point. I'd buy it again if it were lost.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

By Kent Swearingen

from Tulsa, OK

Worked on my PC, but not very well - noisy, and prone to short dropouts on playback. I just tried it on my new iMac - doesn't work at all. The driver installed ok, and the phantom power light comes on when the device is plugged into the USB port, but the computer cannot see the device. I've read that the old US122 doesn't work with Lion, so people needed to get the US122MKII, but I have the US122MKII, and on the latest Mac OS X (10.7.4) it doesn't work. Apparently tascam offers no support for this product in the form of driver updates, or anything else. Also, I tried to uninstall the software, since the thing doesn't work, but the instructions to do this for a Mac are to insert the CD-ROM and click on the "Tascam US1xx remover" icon. There is no such icon.

Great if you have cube Base

By Adam Thurman

from Missouri

Yea you buy this thing and if you don't have cube Base you get a free trial. As if they were really telling you the truth when it says on the box "Cube base" included. Great now I need to spend $500 just to keep going. That software is great if you want to record. I just want something to practice with and play in a band. I eventually will record when my money is not so tight. Ok now for the good stuff about it. I love that it has multiple outputs for sound and that it has even jacks for other instruments. Great little recording accessory. "Again if you have $500 extra.

Loved the product, but doesn't work with Mac OSX Lion

By Linda Hiort

from Frisco

I loved using this interface. It was fairly simple and would connect to my MacBook Pro majority of the time without issue. But I recently updated my computer to Mac OSX Lion and oops it won't connect anymore. If you're looking to buy an interface make sure that the interface is for your system. Also, TASCAM reportedly doesn't make this interface anymore, like it's been discontinued or something so, make sure you check that as well.

Great for what it's worth!

By Bernie

from Miami, FL

I picked this up at a GC store and was able to produce a solid sounding recording with less than solid microphones. It's very easy to use especially if you have a Mac; plug and play with GarageBand once you've installed the drivers. If you do buy this, and are running Mac OS X Lion, you will need to download the latest drivers for it from the TASCAM site as the drivers on the disk are out of date. The Cubase software that came with mine was a little annoying so that might be a hindrance if you are using Windows or don't want to use GarageBand, but with patience I'm sure anyone can figure it out. Aside from that, this is a great product that will suit your needs if you want to do full-band demos or to record ideas, etc.

about the tascam

By alex

from san antonio texas

i think for most people you make no sense you either have bad cables and bad mics and not a good tube preamp i have a us144 and never did me any problems so i get no complaints from my artist! and if you have a studio running with bad cables you are gonna expect some noise but if ya got monster cables you should not have to worry on that! so for my reviews on the tascam i say 5 stars for the us144 classic if ya wanna have that nice studio sound buy monster cables a good mic i would say mxl is real hot right now! and a great tube preamp and you are good to go it makes sense when ya have all these things if ya want ya mic to sound warm crisp and clear! so it's not the interface if it's puts out 24 bit 96k that's the same as in protools m-box and hd protools industry standard recording if you can make it sound good that's all that matters! and besides the software that comes with the tascam is for beginners but the cubase 5 will work well!
