Overview

TASCAM's MP-GT1 is the first MP3 player designed for musicians. Based on the award-winning CD-GT1mkII, this fun mobile guitar trainer includes enough memory to store up to 240 songs. Guitar parts can be slowed down, looped and even eliminated to help you learn new riffs. Play back MP3s using Variable Speed Audition, which slows down the speed without changing the pitch, and sections can be seamlessly looped while practicing tricky passages. Songs can even be pitched up or down to match the tuning of your guitar, so you don't have to re-tune for every song.

The guitar input lets you rock along with thick overdrive and multi-effects, including a guitar canceler so you can play along with your favorite bands. A tuner, metronome, and rechargeable battery are also built-in. All of this is packed into an MP3 player smaller than a stomp box, so stuff it in your backpack, gig bag or back pocket and hit the road.

The MP-GT1 uses a high-speed USB connection to load up MP3s and charge the built-in battery. Zip through your MP3 collection using a data wheel, dedicated buttons and a graphical LCD display. A rechargeable 9-hour lithium ion battery is built into the unit, and an optional power supply is also available.

Features
  • 240-song memory capacity (based on average 4-minute MP3 encoded at 128kbps)
  • Variable Speed Audition changes the speed of the MP3 playback without changing the pitch
  • Pitch control in 1% steps so you don't have to re-tune
  • Seamless looping for practicing tricky passages
  • High-impedance 1/4" guitar input
  • Guitar multi-effects include overdrive, distortion, delay, flange, reverb and more
  • Guitar Cancel effect eliminates the guitar part from the recorded song so you can play along
  • Built-in tuner, oscillator and metronome
  • 1/8" Headphone output
  • Built-in rechargeable battery with 9-hour reserve (rechargeable through USB port or optional power supply)
  • 128x64 graphic LCD display
  • USB jack

I found it kind of odd that my unit came with several albums stored in the unit in the .wma format which are not usable. I don't believe anyone at the store did anything with it, so I'm assuming it came that way from the factory. I like the rechargeable battery, but it's too bad they didn't include a way to change it out if it ever goes bad other than tearing the entire unit apart. Also, it would have been very nice to have it use removeable media like maybe SD cards (which can hold 2GB fairly cheap) With the amount of songs my band practices, I'm already out of space. For slowing down, looping tracks and tuning it's pretty awesome, and I'm glad I got it. Could have been a little more user friendly is all.

I have to say first off, that while I have absolutely no hands on experience with this unit, I do own the original CD GT-1 and have found it to be very handy when learning songs (mainly because of it's portability and self containment), although the FX in the original are pretty cheesy sounding, (however, they get the job done) so unless Tascam has offered a significant improvement in the sound set, well..., one should consider the fact that you can spend a few more dollars for a BOSS Micro BR, complete with a phrase trainer w/ Mp 3 mode, that'll do everything this unit will do and a whole lot more, plus it offers great sounding BOSS FX, 4 playback tracks w/ 32 V tracks, rythum programming, and well.., check it out yourself and you can quickly determine where your money will be better spent!

Went back to the CD version

By Michael T

from Valencia, CA

I really wanted this to be great, but it just wasn't. Lots of crashing, never could get a seamless loop, also the unit will download just about any file format, but will only work with mp3's so it kinda throws you off when you hook it up to your computer and open it like a flash drive, it will list everything you downloaded so you think you've got a song, but when you unplug it from your computer and are ready to use it with your guitar the song doesn't appear in the song list of the unit because its not an mp3. My original CD version of this was great but just stopped working one day. After playing with this new version and getting so frustrated with it I just opted to go and find the original.

Great for practice without keeping others up!

By Michael Magallanes

from Charlotte, NC

I love this device because it is small, flexible and easy to use. You'll want to load your own mp3's and can create folders to organize them once the plugged in on the usb (I have a PC). To practice, I just strap on a guitar, plug a 3ft cable into guitar, run the cable under my belt and plug in the device so it hangs from the top of my belt. Then I plug in the headphone, power up and jam away....I can walk all over the place while jamming away. I find that I'm practicing MUCH more since it is so convenient and have improved a lot. You can adjust the speed (handy for learning licks) ...also the pitch or Guitar/MP3 mix. The guitar effects/tone is decent...read the manual and experiment as there are many options. I would definitely replace this if lost.

The Original CD version was better

By MT

from Santa Clarita, CA

I've tried to work with this for about a year and have now thrown it in the trash. I may have got a lemon! I never could get seamless loops like I was able to on the original CD version. It also crashed all the time. Too many menu's to go through to make simple adjustments. Small amount of memory 150-200 songs maybe. Get the CD version and save yourself the frustration. I'm just sayin!!

well could have been worst

By Patojo Cobain

from whashington dc

To tell you the true I expected more from this thing the first flaw and a BIG one is that only runs mp3 on 128 kbps if you happen to have many songs in better quality that you need to learn you'll have to downgrade them to 128 and that's what spoils the fun for me. The one I have always give me trouble and malfunctions and always have to format it loosing all my songs. Another thing that i hated is that the 5v adapter is hard to find and kind of expensive. So do yourself a favor and look somewhere else.

MP-GT1 - Love Mine!

By Mark Cusick

from Elk Grove, CA

I'm surprised more people haven't rated this unit. It's a cool little device for practicing. Had it for over a year with NO problems (it locked up once but I just reset it). The effects are nice enough but I run mine through a Digitech RP200 for practice. Bought the protection plan with it, but so far no need for it (knock on wood). Mine actually shows a little over 1.5GB of memory. Plenty! More than my iPod Shuffle. Dumping songs into it is easy, especially since I mainly use MP3s anyway. I use it almost every night (sleeping family doesn't appreciate late-nite guitar practice). LOVE IT.

TASCAM MP-GT1 Portable MP3 Tratrainer

By Gilbert Rivera

from NJ

Great tool for beginner guitarist to learn strumming patterns. I like the fact that you can plug in your guitar and play along. Built rugged so it can take some abuse. To much bass with certain songs and no ability to adjust it. That would have been a good feature to have had. Over all there isn't anything to really complain about other than the fact that it should have come with head phones and the power supply. For me it has been a very good investment.

This is Awsome

By William

I have had every trainer from TASCAM. This MP3 model is hands down the best solution. No more power or mobility problems. Best of all no more CDs. Also bought a leather case that just clips this trainer to my strap. I can now just walk around a play.
