Overview

The Tascam GT-R1 Portable Guitar and Bass Recorder is a hand-held stereo digital recorder with a built-in high-quality stereo condenser microphone. The A/B configuration stereo mic allows natural wide sound "near-to-human" listening and there is a variable-angle microphone mechanism to help you find the elusive "sweet spot" for the best recordings.

The GT-R1 recorder also accepts both direct guitar or bass input and has built-in multi effects and preset rhythm patterns. The overdub function lets you create perfect tracks. The GT-R1 allows MP3 and WAVE file recording/playback to/from memory. It performs 48/44.1kHz 24-bit (uncompressed) digital recording to SD/SDHC cards. Other features include analog auto gain control, limiter, and low cut filter. The GR-R1 also has a 1/8" powered external mic input for use with electret condenser mic such as the TASCAM TM-ST1, which adds mid-side stereo recording. (The TM-ST1 terminates to a 1/8" jack.)

The Tascam GT-R1 Portable Guitar and Bass Recorder also functions as a trainer. With variable speed playback the digital recorder gives you the ability to slow down the speed of a CD without changing the pitch and allows you to quickly learn rhythm, lead, or bass parts of your favorite artists. The GT-R1 can reduce Guitar or Bass tracks from the music so you can hear yourself as you play along. It has a built-in tuner and metronome.

The GT-R1 has user-friendly easy operation and has a 128 x 64 graphic LCD with backlight, USB 2.0 Mass Storage, and operates on a rechargeable removable battery. It can also be recharged like an iPod using the USB from a computer. It includes a soft case and a 2GB SD card.

Almost awesome

By Steve Hitch

from Omaha, NE

This little recorder is not a portable studio, but it fills a void for guitar that no other recorder does. It doesn't make studio-quality recordings, but it has reasonable sound quality. It makes learning others' music much easier. More importantly (to me), it also works well as a session recorder. I find it invaluable for that purpose. Say you're writing something new, jamming, or just experimenting and you play something awesome you've never played before. You don't want to stop and try to repeat it, you'd rather keep playing and see what else comes, and figure out what you did again later. Having this recorder going for all sessions is easy, and it's easy to delete the track if nothing interesting happened that time too. It can emulate your amp and effects (somewhat) for quiet earbud practicing, or when traveling, which is a nice added bonus. Well worth the price.

An amazing machine

By david ochola

from Manchester, CT

I bought my first one 3 yrs ago. I had no idea how it was to work other than what the review said it could do. Without reading the manual it was very easy to figure out how to get started and make good use of it. Reading the manual opened up a new world. This review is lengthy but I love this machine! I use it to convert cassette and vinyl disks to mp3 or to WAV (CD format) digital files. A headphone jack from the player into the microphone or line in jack on the GT-R1 and you have pure sound. This works with any sound system that has a headphone jack ie TV and radio, cell phone. You can set the clarity / sensitivity to your hearts content. The attached microphone is great for lectures, dictation, music concerts etc just watch for sound levels. A red light flashes when the sound is too loud and clipping occurs - just reduce the gain and continue recording. It's great for the on the spot recording of ideas, musical or business. It fits in a dress shirt pocket. For musicians, the loop feature is so easy to operate. All music is stored on SD cards. Place a song on an SD card, place the card in the GT-R1 and you can practice along at a slower or faster pace, loop a difficult section ad nauseum, over dub your performance and listen to it for perfection. The overdub records in WAV format only. You can over dub an mp3 or WAV, but the the overdub recording will result in a WAV file. Then using a free online download of "wavepad" you can convert the WAV to mp3 if you need to. There is a tuner on board which is very accurate, picks up harmonics well enough to help detect intonation issues. There is a drum machine. This is not a comprehensive set like Dr Boss Rhythm but enough variety to create with or practice with. For the extreme-ist, the sound effects exist too but I don't use them. Chorus, pan, phase, flanger, Wah, overdrive, compression and reverb. The only weakness is the Guitar jack. After the 100th or so insert and remove of the plug, the connection weakens and eventually fails. This does not affect the functions of the rest of the machine. So I'm on my 3rd one now and the non guitar players in the band are enjoying using it for their practice sessions and every day living. You can split a recording but for other editing, you need a computer. Either take the SD card out and connect it to your computer or connect the GT-R1 to your computer directly. All recordings made with the GT-R1 are named GTxxxx.mp3 or GTxxx.wav. Using the computer you can rename, save and send by email, enhance the volume etc Windows Media and Quicktime / Itunes will play back most of the formats. The Sound from the headphones is impressive. Using Sennheiser HD202 there is is enough bass and thud to satisfy the bassist and drummer, and sweet highs for the violinist. The volume output is great for us hearing impaired musicians too.

Tascam GT-R1

By Tom

from East Northport, NY

Picked up a GT-R1 about a year and a half ago. Unit has great effects with overdubbing and is easy to use. The only bad feature is that the guitar jack receptical is weak and not made to withstand continuous insertion and extraction of the guitar jack. This part of the unit broke internally after less than a year and I had to send it back for repair. A friend of mine has the same problem with his unit. If you buy this unit, I recommend plugging a permanent gold plated jack with a short cable into the unit with a receptical at the end for plugging in your guitar. I made one with components from Radio Shack and so far it has worked well. I also added a jack adapter for the headphones to avoid having that receptical break as well.

Very cool practice tool

By Justin

from Round Rock, Texas

Technology always makes me smile when you can cram a ton of stuff into a small device. I bought this because I always get idea seemingly at the worst times and I needed something handy to scribble them down. First let me say that the effects and built-in sounds are just okay but when you consider that you could send your normal signal through it, that negates the only down side for me. The best feature is being able to load a song and then slow it down without changing the pitch. In addition you can then almost completely drop out the guitar (or Bass) part to better hear yourself on the track. Very slick. In addition there is also a little drum machine with multiple patterns that you can use to jam to or make a quick demo by adding them to your riffs. All in all this is a wonderful tool that far surpasses a simple recorder.

Good Product for Your Money

By Shevach Tamir

from Miami Beach Fl.

The product is proficient, and proffessionally made, vocals sound very good... Very convinient...but a few things I disliked... 1 the guitar effects s in the types of distortion is very limited, I couldn't get my sound... See the previous guitar trainer was awesome for that which is why i couldnt let go of my guitar cause it just sounded so good...but here I was planning to record some stuff and present it to my drummer but he won't get the vibe im trying to impress... Pretty vital issue yet i gave 3 stars bec. everything else was so well organized and, its still good to have as practice to listen to my own harmonies on guitar and to experiment etc. Hoped my review helped...

Many useful features, easy to use -- a worthwhile purchase

By Craig

from Lincoln, Nebraska

I've now been using the GT-R1 for a week, and I have found it to do everything I've wanted: it records my playing (solo or overdubbed onto another track), and it allows me to play over other music. I purchased another portable digital music recorder from Boss, then returned it; I found its manual to be very hard to understand, and found myself to be learning how to use the device more by trial-and-error than by the actual guidance of the manual. That was an extraordinarily frustrating experience. (I wanted to throw the device at the wall. Frequently.) My experience with the GT-R1 has been the opposite. Very easy. So unless you need features which it doesn't have (multi-track recording, for example), I'd recommend it.

Awesome Trainer

By Jim

from Lombard IL

I have used several trainers but, this one beats them all. You can slow down a lead riff without changing the sound tone, so it makes it easy to figure out the riff. Additionally, if you so chose, you can cancel out the guitar or bass on a tune, and overdub yourself to see how you sound. With the on board guitar effects, this unit is quite a bit of fun. Lastly, it also has the function of recording through its own on board stereo mike. At home in the studio, taping a live performance, or in the boardroom taping a meeting. Well worth the money.

The Tascam GTR1 is Amazing!

By James M.

from Chicago IL

I purchased a GTR1 last week and I have used every function it has and i love it. It requires some reading to get started. The compact size means it has few external controls. The instruction manual is very easy to understand.
