TASCAM’s DR-07mkII improves on one of their best-selling portable recorders ever with adjustable microphones, clear sound quality, and a great new design. The stereo recorder features a pair of adjustable condenser microphones. The built-in cardioid pattern mics can be moved from an XY position, for tight imaging, to an AB position, for a wider ambient sound. You choose the best sound depending on the source and environment.
Superior Sound Quality
The sound of the DR-07mkII reflects over 30 years of TASCAM’s recording experience. A separate power supply for the codec enables the full capabilities of the A/D and D/A converter, and separate analog & digital circuit boards and low impedance circuit design reduce noise in the design. The DR-07mkII records to microSD or microSDHC media, recording in MP3 or WAV (BWF) file format at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution.
The 1/8" mic/line input allows you to plug in your own microphones and can supply plug-in power for mics that need it. The Level Align function prevents uneven volume levels during playback through the 1/8” headphone output or built-in speaker. Variable-Speed Audition–which changes playback speed without affecting pitch–and looping are also available during playback for transcription or learning new music. 17.5 hours of longer battery life at 44.1kHz/16-bit, WAV (BWF) is long enough for any recording situation.
Advanced Recording Features
Sharing some features with the new DR-05, the DR-07mkII makes recording simple enough for any musician. The Peak reduction function sets the optimum recording level even in recording to avoid the over level. Quick Menu selects commonly used parameters in playback or record like auto level setting or limiting, while deeper settings are available through a full-featured setup menu.
Some DR-07mkII features that aren’t found on the DR-05 include Overdub mode, which records over your previous take but keeps a copy of the original. The portable recorder also includes Auto Record and Auto Mark settings for hands-off operation. A reverb effect is also provided to give your recordings that mastered polish.

I had used a DR07 for about four years until a bad bout of static electricity fried it. Looked up this one thinking it was similar/improvement and ordered it assuming it had the same features. Alas, it does not have a line in. About 75% of my usage of these units is to record samples from my DVR. I will have to return this and find something with a line in.
I am a professional singer...(hope I spell ok....ha!),and am trying to learn lead guitar. I am amazed at the many things this recorder can do and how much I now depend on it. I use it almost constantly, and enjoy it more and more. I am not going to go into all the features of this little but powerful devise, as I would have to write a book about it!!! I just want who ever is thinking about buying one to know......YOU WONT BE SORRY!!! One of the best investments I have made. In fact, I am thinking of buying the next step up on Tascam Hand Held Recorders, as this one is really really good for so many things, easy to use, and lots of fun.
This thing was everything I hoped it would be. crystal clear sound. Easy to operate. I played a song over my pa system off of a MP3 file in computer and recorded it and then played it back, and the playback was excellent. I even had a dryer going in the laundry room next to my room and it didn't pick it up. This is a very nice recorder. The only mistake I made was not ordering the AC adapter. This thing rocks
I absolutely love this little device. It's worth the money, especially with the price matching policy from Guitar Center. The recording quality of this thing is great. I use it to record jam and practice session, as well as just general use around the house and office. Tascam does a good job of keeping their user interface fairly consistent, therefore, if you've used Tascam products before, you'll have to problem using this device with ease; if not, 15 minutes with the manual, and you're up and running. The fact that it can use USB bus power is another plus for me: saved me money and space for wall warts. It is light and compact enough that I have it in my backpack everywhere I go. A couple of minor minuses: (1) Someone already mentioned that this device hates wind - This is true. I've seen windscreen being sold for this device. (2) The volume of the built-in speaker is very faint; you'll have to use your computer or stereo to listen to your recordings. For what I use it for, and for the money that I paid, this is a perfect little device.
I am blown away by the levels this little number can pick up. I've recorded jams EVERYWHERE with this thing. From hand drumming in parking garages with the awesomest bass you wouldn't believe. To a four piece outfit laying stuff down in a living room. Then, it's off to the park for a wild violin, guitar, and djembe throwdown. She does it all with flying colors! Just be careful with your levels, the mics will overload if your recording volume is a little too high. Also, this thing HATES any wind, whatsoever. Other than that, purchase and enjoy this simple to use little slice of portable recording heaven.
I purchased this recorder because I'm a musician and singer/songwriter and I often get melodies or guitar ideas at random moments so I wanted something that could capture it instantly without rigging all my mics and preamps and such. I AM BLOWN AWAY at the quality of this little thing! I have two condenser mics that I usually use for my acoustic and vocals that are expensive, but this recorder records with such crisp quality that its almost as good as my mics! I even had my room fan on when recording and I live on a busy street so a large UPS truck was noisily driving through and it didn't pick up any white noise, just the guitar and vocals! It is true that you can hear rustling in front of the mics so its best to rest it on a hard surface (or you can attach it to a professional camera stand) and not move around too much, and if you click buttons you can hear that too, but if you have software on your laptop you can easily cut that out at the beginning and end. Or you can just press the buttons softly and you wont hear a thing. You can also overdub on this recorder as well, so you can record instrumental and then record on top of it with vocals at a later date. There are a few effects you can add that are simple but really great. I like the "Hall" setting because it gives my acoustic a more "live" and amplified sound and adds a little echo. The mics move in different positions which helps you capture sound much better. I have not tried it in a large live setting, but you can control the volume so that you dont overdrive the sound and end up with any buzzing or squeaking. This recorder picks up every nuance in a great way and somehow filters out white noises! All i can say is it is crisp, no fuzz, no humming, just clear and crisp! ha It is so worth the money, and if you can't afford a home recording studio but just want to play with making some demos, this thing records with almost the same quality, is easy to load onto the laptop, and can be edited just as easily in any software that you have. It sounded incredible doing both vocals and guitar by placing it close to the 12th fret but midway between my mouth and the guitar and about a foot away. I simply rested it on a low table and sat in front of it, no need for a pop filter everything sounded clear! I tend to finger pick and strum lightly so if you strum heavy you might want to position it further away from you so you dont overdrive the volume and make it peak (although you can adjust that manually) You can also plug in headphones while you are recording so you can hear exactly what it will sound like as you record. The record button also does a stand-by so you can hear what it is picking up before it actually records which is really helpful when you are trying to set volume levels and effects. There are other features that I have not yet tried, but I'm totally loving it! I'm glad others left great reviews, because if they hadn't I wouldn't have ended up with such a great product!
