Overview

TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL -the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away-yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality -over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch-perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

I recently bought a new acoustic guitar, and I wanted a field recorder to record song ideas. Obviously, I wanted the recording unit to have decent mics. I wanted to have the option to record in .wav or mp3. I wanted an on-board speaker to let me sample my takes. I wanted the recorder to act like a portable hard drive that allowed me to simply drag-and-drop my recording onto a computer. Beyond this, I just wanted ease of use, and I didn't want to have to spend a lot of time fidgeting with recording and output levels in different settings. The DR-05 has delivered on %100 of my wants so far. The recordings sound great (certainly beyond "good enough" for song writing). Thus far, I recorded solo and acoustically with my band, and, with the click of a button, the unit was able to auto-select recording levels to avoid a recording that was too quite or too loud (distorted). The recordings sounded clean, and they were useful in the writing process. I was able to preview the recordings via the mini-speaker. Then, I plugged the unit into an 1/8 inch (headphone/ipod) jack into a stereo and listened to the recordings with the whole band, and that was simple. Then, I plugged the unit into my computer's USB port, found the unit appearing as a portable hard drive, clicked through two folders to find the stored mp3s of my recordings, located my recordings, copied them, and pasted them onto my computer. I had the tracks emailed to my bandmates in less than five minutes. Piece of cake. I'll add that my initial entry into small recorders was the micro BR, and it was inconvenient, lacking, and a hassle to do specifically what I described above. Lastly, I cannot comment on what qualities and features the field recorders one class up in price from this unit can provide you.

I purchased this about two years ago. The other day I went to use it and the screen was black. Since the controls are menu driven, and the screen is not working it is impossible to use. There is no obvious reason why this occurred, The unit was not dropped, exposed to extreme temperatures, exposed to moisture or in any way mishandled. It lasted a little longer than its warranty. Manufacturers response was to "Buy a New one". I will probably go back to using my 20 year old tape recorder.

impressive

By Kevin

perfect little multipurpose recorder. very user friendly, ive never needed to read the manual to use it. the sound quality is amazing. only downside is the built in speaker is kinda garbage, i can barely hear mine but the recording quality outweighs that. if your on the fence and just need a basic audio recorder that is actually good quality, get this one.

Slick little unit

By Lee Crawford

from Mpls, Mn.

Surpassed my expectations. Easy enough to use and sounds very, very good. Haven't had it long but it seems solid and a nice size. Good for getting down those elusive chords (and lyrics) that have a habit of slipping away on you.I don't regret this decision at all.

Fantastic Sound reproduction

By Russel Jocoy

from Port St. Lucie, Florida

Received my Tascam DR-05 last week. I was very happy with the product packaging, batteries, USB cord, included. After scanning the instruction booklet, and entering some preset's I did some test recordings. Most command's are fairly straight forward, even for an analog persona. I was very impressed with the recording options and the range of depth on the MP-3 scale. WAV file recording produce's some amazing stereo recordings, with a silent recording room..CD quality..I recorded a song on my guitar and when finished, played back the recording and after all was complete I could hear a digital clock ticking in the background.. Very sensitive microphones indeed..Overall a great product for a great price.... My only complant is this unit's internal speaker....It is an "ear phone" not a speaker. This is only for quick review, use the headphone jack....

Worked Well at First

By Robert Steeb

from Plymouth, Wisconsin

I bought this this recorder 2 years ago and worked well the 15-20 times I used it. I didn't pick it up in a year and replace the batteries. Thing does not work and I'm very disappointed. I had one that lasted over 9 years. Too bad, I don't think I get this kind again.

Very Good for the Money

By Joseph Nocella

I've been using this recorder for band rehearsals. It does the job quite well. For under $100, you can't beat it. It is easy to use. It lasts pretty long on two AA batteries.

Nearly perfect.

By Rick Stockton

from reno, nv

For my usage, which does not include any overdub or multitrack, this model lacks only two features I would have liked: (1) XLR Microphone input (which is included in the top-of-the-line DR-100); and (2) Digital output (Coax or Toslink). Curiously, they don't offer this on any model - so you MUST flip open the micro SD cover, remove the card, and put it into a card reader (i.e., a USB storage adapter) to get digital audio into your stereo system for playback. On my high-end hifi, the analog output is much worse than the quality of sound I get plugging the card into a USB adapter on the Receiver. The pre-amp which drives the stereo "line out" socket probably isn't very good. Swap the micro SD card, even if you're only using it for playback (with no need to work with the file as digital data). And don't worry about the flap which covers the card slot - it's replaceable.

This recorder is GREAT for recording live using the mic or from the line input. I have made a few recordings and they all have recorded very good. Overall, It's a great buy for portable recording with quality and ease of transferring to a computer for editing or saving. Can't beat the price, either. I give TASCAM, a BIG....
