Overview

The TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is one of the best and most affordable ways to remove the mind-numbing glow of the computer screen from personal recording. It's safe to say, that after decades of manufacturing and transforming Portastudios, TASCAM has revolutionized the series once again. Employing 8 combo 1/4" - XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power, 32 tracks (8 mono, 12 stereo) the ability to select between stereo and mono and an affluence of other key features, TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is an obvious choice for multi-channel home recording. The DP-32SD is just like its brother the DP-32, but without the built-in CDR/RW drive for recording media.

Utilizing SD/SDHC media ensures confident recording, free from shock due to loud sounds
The DP-32SD adopted use of SD/SDHC media. SD/SDHC cards provide secure shock resistance due to the absence of any rotary mechanism. File format of the DP-32SD is FAT 16 or 32. You can find the recorded files on your computer when connected via USB.

The last 12 faders are selectable between MONO and STEREO
The DP-32SD has 12 selectable tracks between MONO or STEREO. These tracks provide more flexibility. For example, set to STEREO for recording synthesizer, or set to MONO when recording guitar or vocal. Not only that, you can create ideal settings for each track. (set #9 to #12 STEREO, then set #13 to #22 MONO) If all tracks are set to MONO the DP-32SD becomes a 20-track multi track recorder.

21 faders eliminates layer structuring
The DP-32SD, even with the high number of tracks and features is one of the easiest multi-track recorders in the market to use. The DP-32SD has 20 track-faders and one master fader. You can control any track with ease.

The 3.5" full-color LCD and the self-illuminated buttons increase visibility
The DP-32SD has a 3.5" LCD screen and select self-illuminated buttons, making it easy to view your entire creative process. Some of the illuminated buttons include (SOURCE, SELECT, REC, MUTE).

12 rotary knobs linked to the LCD to help increase easy operation
The DP-32SD has employed rotary knobs to control qualities such as EQ, Effect Send and other related features.

If you are looking for massive onboard effects, infinite ad nauseam tweaking, and more automation than r2d2 look elsewhere this unit is not for you!

If you want a hassle free, reliable, durable, portable and musical unit then read on.

I have had the unit long enough to make a competent review of it.
I bought the SD variant because I did not want a cd drive since it involves moving parts and moving parts is bad at least in my book :).

Using the unit is pretty straight forward you can take it out of the box and use it as an 8x8 recorder the first time you use it like an old 424 or similar tape machines.
My only real complaint about the unit is the manual. if you take the time to figure it out and maybe watch a couple of tutorials on it. It is not difficult to pickup.

Most of the projects I have done so far I actually mixed down on the machine then exported the resulting wave file to my ipad (final touch app) to master it.
I have to say having a slider for each channel is refreshing on mix down, and the virtual tracks are a really nice feature. This was the original reason I chose this unit over the R-16. I made great use of them on one project where I was tracking drums and the client wanted to have different takes side by side.

As other reviews have stated this unit does not have a lot of effects horsepower.
I would agree but for recording they are more than adequate.
And the guitar effects are passable though I only use them for tracking not recording a whole band live as you are limited in simultaneous effects.
I really like having the noise gate on all incoming inputs.
Also you can bounce a track or tracks and add effects at that point.

When doing mix down I usually use an external reverb in conjunction with the internal reverb. I personally don't use a lot of effects post anyway.

The preamps are very clean yet they seem to have the tascam (warmth) to them.
I do use a single tube preamp sometimes when tracking vocals.

I have paired the unit to my Mac-mini for file tweaking and transfer.
But I built a decrepit old Linux FTP box with 4 big cheap hdd's for archives.
As you can generate an incredible amount of data with this guy.

Projects completed with unit at time of review:
I have cut several good tracks for myself.

Recorded:
A string quartet. ( a paying gig)
A pipe organ concert. ( got rave reviews on this)

Produced: Jazz trio project

Produced:
several songs for a hip hop act.
Including doing the drum loops for stage show.

Produced/Recorded the neighbor kid's speed metal group.
Could've used 12 inputs on that one but hey it worked.

Recorded a series of ambient loops for commercial client.

And several more projects in the process right now.
Unit paid for itself twice over in the first month.

In final if you are tired of computer hassles and just want to make/record music.
This is the best machine for the money hands down.

Musicians friend took very good care of me on this purchase.

I've used my DP32SD for about two months, now. I was using an analog Tascam 488 MkII before this one. The DP32 sounds good, but seems to be lacking the highs of audio. My Marshall amp screams tone and sustain, but the DP32 can't capture all of the tone because it lacks the highs. My little Tascam DR40 sounds better because it can record 24bit at 96k. So, the DP32 is missing a lot of tone in my guitar after recording. I was really disappointed as this portastudio is supposed to be Tascam's best studio to date. Also, this thing was made in China, and it's already broken. The assign, mixer, menu, home, eq, jog dial buttons do not work. One day these buttons just stopped working with no explanation. Now, I'm having to take it to Audio Electronics for them to fix. Tascam should've kept there business in Japan where it was top notch quality.

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

Got this for recording demos. Got very tired of daw freezing with pc . Don't want to spend thousands on a Mac and pro tools so got this.still learning but I certainly don't regret the purchase. No hangups or crashes with this. And you can always take the wav files to a daw for mastering (although I have not yet tried that). There is a instruction dvd for about 30 bills that is well worth the money. You can find it if you Google it. It's geared twords an older model but a applies to the 32 or 24 sd the same.

I've been a Tascam user since their 4 track tape days. This machine is very similar to their older products & I jumped right in to its operation without much trouble. Sounds great, solid construction, exactly what I expect from Tascam.

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

I wanted to dabble in home recording of covers and originals, and record some bands. I have a small audio interface, but I didn't want to carry around a computer to record 2 tracks at time. Then there was learning curve of the DAW and worrying about latency.

The DP32SD is about the same cost of a decent 4-8 input usb/firewire audio interface. If you read the reviews for the traditional interfaces, you'll see most people have very mixed results with compatibility or reliability.

This unit is equivalent to carrying a laptop, mixer, and small audio interface. That's a decent compromise for me. Having 8 inputs and real faders and knobs to turn makes it so much easier to use. I don't think I'll never need all 32 tracks. It's really easy to get started and do some basic multi-tracking and editing.
I found the Sandisk 32GB SD cards for $20 that will hold 7hrs of 8 track 24/48k audio. 3.5hr of 16 tracks. More than I'll ever need. If I get to that level, I'll have a dedicated full time ProTools equipped studio.

      Cons:
The built in effects have a learning curve and there are limitations on how they can be used.
Editing is somewhat hampered by the tiny screen. It's easy to export the tracks to waves for editing with a on a computer with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
It's larger than the Zoom R24 and the Zoom has a rhythm section.

I have always used Tascam recorders and loved them. But when I got this one the disappointment level was beyond belief. It sucks. It stinks. It is easily the worst piece of equipment I have ever purchased. (fair notice- I did not purchase it from Musicians Friend) I won't even waste the time to write out everything that's wrong with this WAYsubstandard thing. Just know that after attempting to be productive with this machine for 2 years, I finally made a video of myself smashing it with an axe. That was the only good thing to come from purchasing this garbage.

Bought this to replace my Tascam 24 track that had issues powering up. Due to time limitations it sat in the box for almost a year. Finally got the time and recorded 5 songs. Went to mix it down a few weeks later and it was totally dead. Bought a new power source...still dead. Called Tascam, they said it was out of warranty. Lost out on the warranty because of the time factor and don't want to chance paying a bundle to have it fixed and have it last for another week so going into the garbage. Two units with problems, I have lost my confidence in Tascam.
If you want more flexibility and more tools, download Reaper (real Cheap) and get an interface.
