The fast, flexible, and affordable center of your computer music setup.

The 16-channel TASCAM US-1641 MIDI-enabled interface is one of your best choices for getting audio into your computer properly. Equipped with USB 2.0 and enough I/O to record your entire band, the US-1641 audio interface is always ready when you lay down some tracks. Use it to capture live performances, like the fruit of your church choir's hard work. 16 inputs plus and 4 outputs offer enough channels to give every instrument and voice a chance to shine. TASCAM even includes Cubase LE Version 5 with the US-1641 for enough state-of-the art recording power to get the mix just right. Small enough to fit in a single rack space, the TASCAM US-1641 interface is ideal for both studio and portable computer recording. Since the mic and line inputs are on the front panel, there's no need for crawling behind a rack to get going. The rear panel is armed with 4 balanced line inputs for interfacing with synths, effects, mic preamps, or anything with a line level out. With the TASCAM US-1641 you also get up to 96kHz/24-bit audio resolution without having to lower the input/output count. The US-1641 interface's zero-latency monitoring prevents distracting delays for your performers during recording.Naturally, the TASCAM US-1641 is ASIO, GSIF2, and CoreAudio compatible for use with Logic Pro, Digital Performer, Cubase, SONAR, Nuendo, Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, Vegas, Live, GigaStudio, and most other audio recording software.

  • Great for the money with only a few complaints.

As reviewed by Chris on 9/12/2009

I bought this product about 3 weeks ago and absolutely love it! I have an older computer that's had several major upgrades, and the US-1641 still works flawlessly! I'm running a Dell XPS 410, 1.83GHz Intel Duo Core, with 4GBs of RAM, a 512Mb ATI Radeon video card. The studio monitors I'm using are KRK Rokit 8s. Pros: Well built. Quality knobs and controls. Very nice Preamps with lots of head room. Absolutely NO latency problems! Cons: I was looking forward to switching from Sony Acid Pro 6 to Cubase; but after fighting with Cubase for about 12 hours I finally gave up and went back to Acid where everything is working seamlessly! Admittedly, part of my problem may be computing power. I may try to make the switch again after I upgrade my hardware. Other than that everything else is working exactly the way it's supposed to! A Bit Of Advice: If you do end up buying the US-1641, go ahead and budget another 20-40 dollars for purchasing an additional PCI USB card. This product performs MUCH better if it's not sharing USB bandwidth with everything else on your computer.

  • Great product, a couple design flaws.

As reviewed by Steve F. on 1/22/2010

Ok guys... I've now got several hours of recording in with this thing, and here are some observations: I'm using a PC, with XP. It's a P4, 2.8, with 1 gig of RAM; and I'm using Cubase LE4 (it comes with the Tascam, but I already had it since it came with my old interface too). I record at 48Khz/24bit. I downloaded the newest drivers AND firmware from Tascam's site before I even hooked it up. I was recording 9 tracks simultaneously with NO hiccups or glitches at all. I can't comment on latency, as everything was recorded "live". So far, I am VERY impressed with this thing... Here are the only complaints I've got: There are NO markings/graduations/detents/etc AT ALL on the gain controls, so any kind of precise recall is impossible; I'm seriously considering painting reference marks on mine. The gain controls are too close together, so it's VERY easy to bump one or more inadvertently while trying to adjust a different one, and with no markings, there's no way to be sure if you moved it or not. Other than those things, I love it.

  • Good for Some

As reviewed by Guerrilla Audio Recording on 3/11/2010

I own and use this interface on a daily basis as part of a bigger recording setup. It is one of the more expansive USB 2.0 interfaces available, doing 16 tracks with no problems (after adding 8 more pres through the 4 1/4" and S/PDIF on the back and 2 line level inputs on the front). The preamps are not going to take your breath away, but they are very quiet and do have a lot of headroom. No pads though, and phantom power is switchable only in 2 groups of 4, so ribbon users beware. The knobs feel a little flimsy, and you only get 1 led to indicate clipping, so setting levels is largely dependent on your ears. One thing to be aware of is that it is very difficult to mix outside the box with this interface (only 4 outputs) and it has absolutely no method for expansion. I eventually got the interface to play nice with my system, but it involved using a custom ASIO driver and still won't work together with my mBox. For a serious system, I would recommend saving a bit and getting something that will allow future expansion. For a personal home studio or a band that wants to record a practice or a demo, it's hard to beat this thing as long as you don't want to use ProTools. The included Cubase software is little better than a demo, however. If you can't afford something better, check out Reaper (a free DAW). It works great with this interface!
