• Too much static noise

  I play guitar in a church choir, and I got a Tascam DR-08 Stereo recorder to record my choir rehearsals, I've been recording the rehearsals with the built in microphones and the sound is amazing, the reason I bought the Tascam TM-ST1 (external) stereo microphone is because when I handle the recorder to pause, or to move it around, the recorder catches every single handling noise. I figured that with an external microphone I could actually keep the recorder in my hand and push play, pause, and record, without having to worry about the handling noise. I performed a test recording in the same exact situation both with the built in microphones, and then using the TM-ST1 mic. and the recording with the TM-ST1 mic gives me a hiss/static noise in the recording every time. the built in microphones give me a clear clean sound without the hiss/static noise. I also used the ST1 mic to record using a laptop, and then a desktop using my recording software and I always got that hiss/static noise every time I used the ST1, the mic looks nice and the sound of the recording is good, the stereo works perfectly, but I can hear a hiss in every recording, (sounds like I have a frying pan with boiling oil in the background) I guess I can remove the static sound with filters in the software that I have, but I wish the sound was just as clean as when I use the built in microphones. Very disappointed.

• Go Anywhere, Get Everything

  I own a pair of these. I use them in both studio and field recording. To get the most out of them I got adapters to split the 3.5mm stereo out to two 1/4" monos, which I run into separate mixer channels (Behringer Xenyx 502 or 802). I can then control the mix of both the center channels and the two wide field channels to control the ambience. I've heard no better results in field recording in terms of realism. For field work I run this into a TASCAM DR-07 or Roland Micro-BR, both battery powered. I'm about to get a Behringer Xenyx 1002B portable mixer, so I can do field recording with no power requirements at all. The small size is great for portability but not for ruggedness. I've learned to be very careful with these mikes, and it's worth it. It's a shame they don't use phantom power as the Xenyx supply it, but a single AA battery lasts many, many hours in them. I've also used them for close work, one each on vocals and acoustic guitar, and loved the sound. Even mixed to mono, you can hear the difference with and without the back channel, so I consider them worthy of serving as individual mikes with great sound plus a bonus feature. As such, I'll be buying more of them.
