TASCAM MP-GT1 Guitar Trainer at Winter NAMM 2007

General Media

Pocket-sized chops builder.

TASCAM's MP-GT1 is the first MP3 player designed for musicians. Based on the award-winning CD-GT1mkII, this fun mobile guitar trainer includes enough memory to store up to 240 songs. Guitar parts can be slowed down, looped and even eliminated to help you learn new riffs. Play back MP3s using Variable Speed Audition, which slows down the speed without changing the pitch, and sections can be seamlessly looped while practicing tricky passages. Songs can even be pitched up or down to match the tuning of your guitar, so you don't have to re-tune for every song.

The guitar input lets you rock along with thick overdrive and multi-effects, including a guitar canceler so you can play along with your favorite bands. A tuner, metronome, and rechargeable battery are also built-in. All of this is packed into an MP3 player smaller than a stomp box, so stuff it in your backpack, gig bag or back pocket and hit the road.

The MP-GT1 uses a high-speed USB connection to load up MP3s and charge the built-in battery. Zip through your MP3 collection using a data wheel, dedicated buttons and a graphical LCD display. A rechargeable 9-hour lithium ion battery is built into the unit, and an optional power supply is also available.

TASCAM MP-GT1 Portable MP3 Guitar Trainer Features:

  • 240-song memory capacity (based on average 4-minute MP3 encoded at 128kbps)
  • Variable Speed Audition changes the speed of the MP3 playback without changing the pitch
  • Pitch control in 1% steps so you don't have to re-tune
  • Seamless looping for practicing tricky passages
  • High-impedance 1/4" guitar input
  • Guitar multi-effects include overdrive, distortion, delay, flange, reverb and more
  • Guitar Cancel effect eliminates the guitar part from the recorded song so you can play along
  • Built-in tuner, oscillator and metronome
  • 1/8" Headphone output
  • Built-in rechargeable battery with 9-hour reserve (rechargeable through USB port or optional power supply)
  • 128x64 graphic LCD display
  • USB jack
  • Auto Power Off and Hold function

Nice item, but could have been better.

I found it kind of odd that my unit came with several albums stored in the unit in the .wma format which are not usable. I don't believe anyone at the store did anything with it, so I'm assuming it came that way from the factory. I like the rechargeable battery, but it's too bad they didn't include a way to change it out if it ever goes bad other than tearing the entire unit apart. Also, it would have been very nice to have it use removeable media like maybe SD cards (which can hold 2GB fairly cheap) With the amount of songs my band practices, I'm already out of space. For slowing down, looping tracks and tuning it's pretty awesome, and I'm glad I got it. Could have been a little more user friendly is all.

Tascam MP GT-1 Trainer

I have to say first off, that while I have absolutely no hands on experience with this unit, I do own the original CD GT-1 and have found it to be very handy when learning songs (mainly because of it's portability and self containment), although the FX in the original are pretty cheesy sounding, (however, they get the job done) so unless Tascam has offered a significant improvement in the sound set, well..., one should consider the fact that you can spend a few more dollars for a BOSS Micro BR, complete with a phrase trainer w/ Mp 3 mode, that'll do everything this unit will do and a whole lot more, plus it offers great sounding BOSS FX, 4 playback tracks w/ 32 V tracks, rythum programming, and well.., check it out yourself and you can quickly determine where your money will be better spent!

pretty nice

this thing is amazin.it has a million different effects you can use .you plug your guitar into it with headphones and change the effect or distortion.it's soo awesome.you can turn down the volume of vocals and drums to better hear the guitars.there is an accurate tuner splendid but when i got it i realized that it only took mp3 music files so for about a week i couldnt use it til i figured out how to change my music files. for anyone using itunes the way to change your music files to mp3 format is this first go to edit then preferences then the advanced tab then click importing then in the import using menu chooose the format you want which is mp3. then click ok and right click the song and click convert selection to mp3

Fantastic Gadget

Bought as a birthday present for myself. This thing is awesome. The F/X are nicely handled and are easily tweaked. The play along feature with variable tempo is great for learning songs at own pace. I would recommend this device for any guitar player. Now you can practice anywhere, with F/X without having to carry all that equipment with you. The only thing I would suggest from mfr. is to include power source with package and not as an option.
