The Tascam GT-R1 Portable Guitar and Bass Recorder is a hand-held stereo digital recorder with a built-in high-quality stereo condenser microphone. The A/B configuration stereo mic allows natural wide sound "near-to-human" listening and there is a variable-angle microphone mechanism to help you find the elusive "sweet spot" for the best recordings.
The GT-R1 recorder also accepts both direct guitar or bass input and has built-in multi effects and preset rhythm patterns. The overdub function lets you create perfect tracks. The GT-R1 allows MP3 and WAVE file recording/playback to/from memory. It performs 48/44.1kHz 24-bit (uncompressed) digital recording to SD/SDHC cards. Other features include analog auto gain control, limiter, and low cut filter. The GR-R1 also has a 1/8" powered external mic input for use with electret condenser mic such as the TASCAM TM-ST1, which adds mid-side stereo recording. (The TM-ST1 terminates to a 1/8" jack.)
The Tascam GT-R1 Portable Guitar and Bass Recorder also functions as a trainer. With variable speed playback the digital recorder gives you the ability to slow down the speed of a CD without changing the pitch and allows you to quickly learn rhythm, lead, or bass parts of your favorite artists. The GT-R1 can reduce Guitar or Bass tracks from the music so you can hear yourself as you play along. It has a built-in tuner and metronome.
The GT-R1 has user-friendly easy operation and has a 128 x 64 graphic LCD with backlight, USB 2.0 Mass Storage, and operates on a rechargeable removable battery. It can also be recharged like an iPod using the USB from a computer. It includes a soft case and a 2GB SD card.

I bought the GT-R1 about 3 months ago and I love it. I bought it to serve 2 purposes, the first was to figure out songs and the second was as a great portable recorder. The guitar trainer is perfect for musicians that play cover songs or for figuring out parts for song ideas. Being able to slow a song down without changing pitch really helps. You are also able to change pitch which helps if you need to change key of a song. The stereo recording is pretty decent too. I have used it on a number of occasions and if you get the right placement it can sound pretty good, it is a little light in the bass, but a pretty accurate representation of the sound. The one thing that I didn't like about it is that you have to buy the power adapter separately. This thing has great battery life and will charge off of the USB port of your computer, but it take about 4 hours for a full charge and you can't use it while it is charging off of USB. If you want to charge it and use it at the same time you need the adapter. If I had know, it would have just ordered it all at the same time. The other thing that is useful is the accessory kit. It really helps to be able to mount this to a mic stand. The accessory kit is expensive but kind of a necessity to mount.
im in a metal band that me and my best friends put together. one day we decided to record ourselves, so i used my GTR-1. we recorded with the interior microphone. i was amazed by how good the the recording came out. also, its small size is really helpful. i can take it anywhere!!! it also has many guitar and bass effects so it always keeps me entertained ;)
This little recorder is not a portable studio, but it fills a void for guitar that no other recorder does. It doesn't make studio-quality recordings, but it has reasonable sound quality. It makes learning others' music much easier. More importantly (to me), it also works well as a session recorder. I find it invaluable for that purpose. Say you're writing something new, jamming, or just experimenting and you play something awesome you've never played before. You don't want to stop and try to repeat it, you'd rather keep playing and see what else comes, and figure out what you did again later. Having this recorder going for all sessions is easy, and it's easy to delete the track if nothing interesting happened that time too. It can emulate your amp and effects (somewhat) for quiet earbud practicing, or when traveling, which is a nice added bonus. Well worth the price.
