Album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL â??the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet awayâ??yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality â??over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitchâ??perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

  • Five Stars because of the price as compared to the DR-07

As reviewed by Frederick Marsh on 9/18/2012

I own a DR-07 and had assumed we would buy an identical one for use at our church until I saw the sale on the Guitar Center website with a price of almost half what is normally charged. Doing some research, it appeared both recorders could give the same quality recording and there were only minor differences in the two which did not affect our need at church. We use two video cameras at church simultaneously for recording the worship service during special events. These cameras only have an internal microphone no input for an external microphone. This is not normally a problem for ordinary events since we use only one camera and (under those conditions) the camera's duty is to only send the video signal to the hardware DVD recorder with the audio input to the recorder coming from the mixer. However, for special events, our normal procedure is to connect a Tascam to the mixer and record the audio from there and then use both cameras configured for HD. We combine the Tascam audio signal with that of the two video cameras using a video program such as Vegas Pro. Then we produce DVDs and Blu-ray disks for the congregation. There are some differences which required some deviation in our written procedures, but the end result was the same which simply meant the church could save almost a hundred dollars by buying the DR-05 rather than the DR-07 mkII. At church, we did not need the overdub feature, reverb feature, or the variable microphone feature of the DR-07 so buying the DR-05 on sale was an easy choice.

  • Great device for quick recordings of surprisingly good quality

As reviewed by David Beccia on 9/18/2012

I picked this unit up to bring to jams, record practices and/or in case a song idea hits while noodling and I'm not near my regular recording setup. It's easy to use, and the sound quality is far greater than I expected when using external speakers/amplification. The internal speakers are poor, but what can you expect at this price? For a quick test I recorded myself playing a strat through a Twin Reverb with the Tascam about a foot from the amp. I played it back through some Event 20/20 monitors, and it sounded just like me through the Twin. I was amazed! You can't go wrong, especially for the asking price.
