• Somewhat worth the money

  The Tascam DR-03 has the recording quality that you paid for the money. The down side of this hand held recorder is that it's battery life is horrible. I only recorded with a mic input, and it was mostly clear. I used an RCA recorder before and this definitely cost more, but it lacks the static in the recording that the RCA recorder had. It does transfers files fast it has a couple of configurations/options too work with. The structure seems somewhat solid, but I found it helpful to turn of the orange backllit screen to save battery life. For its performance it could be priced a little cheaper.

• The good and bad

  It's all good (for the money) accept the battery life. Two AAA Alkalines only last an hour or so in record mode. Not sure about play mode since I've been moving files to a computer. The overall operation is simple.

• Buy it for what it is, not because its cheaper!

  I see lots of slams on this thing, and some of the gripes are legit, but lets be real here, this recorder is inexpensive and expectations should also be adjusted with the price tag! Personally I think this thing records decent audio. Yes, everything everyone says is true about the recorded noise you get when you handle it while placing it into position... so edit out that noise and you have a great recording! Its cheap plastic can only be expected but does not bother me. I bought this strictly to have a very small and very portable recorder to make rehearsal or live performance recordings, and it does it well! Getting used to the record levels settings, takes some experimentation, but once you get a feel for this, you'll love what it does! I bought this because I did not want a ton of features like the higher priced models have. The only thing I wish it had was an optional "stand alone" power supply, since the batteries will not last much longer than 4 hours. Although, I have squeezed a little more time out of them by using "Stealth Mode" which turns of the backlight, and turns of the flashing red record light. The buttons are tiny and the text on the screen is tiny, but hey, this is a tiny unit. No complaints as "tiny" is what I wanted in a small recorder! The mics, although you'd expect some real crappy sound, actually do a good job and provide a nice crisp sounding recording. As much as I buy and sell gear, this is something I'll keep around for convenience for a while!
