The Portastudio's digital sibling has arrived and it's just as easy to use as the original.
The TASCAM DP-004 Pocketstudio is a 4-track digital multitrack recorder based on 25 years of easy-to-use cassette Portastudios. The DP-004 Pocketstudio has been updated with 4 tracks of CD-quality digital recording. Like the classic Portastudios, a row of knobs sets levels and pan instead of a list of menus. The DP-004 can record 2 microphones at once to layer and mix tracks on the included 1GB SD Card. A built-in stereo condenser microphone makes it simple to use the TASCAM DP-004 to record anywhere you go. Or you can plug your microphones into the rear-panel inputs.
Once you set levels and pan, record your mix to the dedicated stereo master track and transfer to a computer over USB 2. Despite its go-anywhere compact design, the TASCAM DP-004 Pocketstudio is simple enough for students, songwriters and anyone who wants to keep their recording process simple and creative.
TASCAM DP-004 Pocketstudio Portable 4-Track Digital Multitrack Recorder Features:
- 2 - 1/4" mic inputs
- Switchable guitar input
- Headphone/Line output
- USB 2.0 connector
- Records to SD Card media
- 1GB SD card included
- Powered through AA batteries or optional power adapter (not included)
- CD-quality 44.1kHz/16-bit WAV recording
Don't be tied down to only record in one place, go anywhere and still get great sound. Order today.

NEW REVIEW - A Dream Come True - Almost
This takes my recording duty with me wherever I go (a bar, a coffee shop, a campfire in the forest, a local park, etc). I previously only used PC to record music. Even though this thing is a wonder (in terms of portability), it cannot do several crucial things that PC sequencers that I've been used to can do.
When overdubbing, I am used to be able to automatically mix the audio that's already there with the audio that I am recording (for smoother transitions between verses/choruses/sections). I have become quite accustomed to recording songs a verse or a chorus part at a time. With this unit, when you go on to working on the next section of the song, you must catch the beat exactly with your record button press as to avoid cutting off the previously recorded part that precedes the part you are recording. Early in the recording process this results in weird-sounding tiny interruptions between each part of the song that is recorded separately. But as you add more and more tracks, the interruptions become less noticeable, especially if the sections overlap each other at different time locations on different tracks. This pushes you to record longer sections at a time, in order to avoid dealing with the awkward momentary silence moments in between sections, and, in turn, probably makes you a better player. You also can't EQ or compress things like you can on a PC. But that also has its upside. For example, when using the built in condenser mics, I learned to equalize the sound by moving the sound source farther and closer away from the mic. They have also pushed me to be more aware of the room that I am recording in. To sum it up, this thing really teaches you how to record raw and how to sound good without all the advanced studio tricks. It teaches you to use your ears and shows you what you really sound like. This was a very productive investment.

My favorite musical toy
First of all, I have spent a lot of time as a professional recording and live sound engineer, so I'm not going to tell you that this little box will replace the need for a studio...
But, I will say that it has quickly become my favorite musical toy. I hate to start up the computer and all the outboard gear when I'm rehearsing or writing a new song, this little box helps me get right to it! The sound quality is really quite superb for such a small little recorder too. But what I like most is its simplicity. Arm the track hit record/play and go. Bouncing tracks is easy and being able to record a final mix on board is a big plus.
Make sure you buy a larger SD card (I went with an 8GB, which gives me almost 500 track minutes) because you'll end up using this unit a lot more than expected, especially because it will easily fit in your gig bag, even if you already carry way too much gear.
Long story short...it's worth it. It won't replace the studio, but it will let you figure out what you're going to do when you get there.

A beautiful little machine
Astonishing quality and versatility in such a small and elegant package. Easy to use; so far I've only used the built in mikes - sat down with the recorder on the table in front of me, played guitar and sang. Played back on my portable speakers and heard better sound than on my TEAC reel to reel with great microphones. The line out/headphone jack, two mic. inputs, 4 tracks, bounce and punch in capabilities, ease of use and brilliant sound - and you can download on to your computer - I guess you could say I am pleased.

Great Device!
Just got the Tascam DP-004 and I love it. So far I've only messed around with recording multi-tracks, but have found it easy to use. I just quickly reviewed the quick start guidelines and was off and recording my keyboard. Love it so far!
