Stable Power is More Important Than Any FX

      By Mark

      from Los Angeles

Comments about T-Rex Engineering FuelTank Classic Power Supply:

Having a lot of experience in custom Audio/Video, I know that a stable power supply is not an option, it's a necessity. This is also true of pedal boards, which carry a significant noise, especially when the FX pedals are daisy-chained, whether they're powered by 9v or battery. For me, noise elimination comes first before the fun starts. After all, if you're mixing your music signal with noise and unwanted composite distortion, you're preventing your audience from hearing your musical creations clearly. Smart signal path, solid connections and above all, beefy isolated power supply. Upon firing up the board with the Fuel Tank, first you notice what's missing; noise. Then you'll notice a dramatic improvement in the overall tone, even with a clean signal. Extended lower frequencies have more bite. Upper frequencies are brighter. The amp sounds like it's on steroids and doesn't struggle. I have been playing a '65 ES335 (humbuckers) as well as '52 reissue thinskin Tele (single coil) through a Fender Deluxe reverb amp. I first noticed a richer, more robust sound at any volume level. Also much more gain. The Fuel Tank comes with a 9v daisy-chain to run the power to five pedals in series. So, when I popped on various FX, the sound was distinct, appearing to float above a 0db noise floor. Stable power eliminates not just extraneous dither noise but it really helps define the signal. You should buy this piece to add to your existing board, or buy it first before any other items on a new board. Note, this unit is not a noise clamp per se but it provides the foundation for a successful board.

T Rex Fuel Tank Classic Power Supply

      By ROBERT GILBERT

      from Simsbury, Connecticut

Comments about T-Rex Engineering FuelTank Classic Power Supply:

The T Rex Fuel Tank Classic Power Supply provides 8 output jacks of 9VDC power and two 12V (DC and AC) power jacks for powering higher voltage requirement effects. The T Rex FTC works well in this respect if the sum total of your mA (milliamp) consumption does not exceed 500mA for the 8 output jacks, or 500mA for each 12V supply. The T Rex FTC is supplied with numerous extra power cable connections of powering center-tip-negative, daisy chained, 1/8" plug, and other connections. Be sure the sum total of the mA of your 9VDC effects does not exceed 500mA, otherwise your effects will not work with the T Rex FTC as required. While I praise the T Rex FTC for the power supply jacks, the problem the T Rex FTC has is in its cosmetic design: If you happen to be a left-footed player, the T Rex FTC can only be mounted only partway from the left-center of a PedalTrain PT-JR, PT-1, or PT-2 board, as the access points for these boards only allow specific locations of the T Rex FTC. By contrast, the PedalTrain PT-3 and PT-Pro boards do not prohibit access at all locations; it may be well worth the trouble to invest in these boards for easier installation of the T Rex FTC. The 2nd problem in the cosmetic design is the location of the AC power connection. This is on the right side only of the T Rex FTC; therefore connecting the AC power cord must be accomplished by installing the T Rex FTC under the far-left or left-center of the board. For left-footed guitarists who require a wah on the left side of the board, this could cause unwanted inductor hum into the signal chain of the effects if your wah is located on the left side of your effects board. At this writing, it is recognized that the T Rex FTC has isolated transformers built into its design on one ground that may help alleviate this problem, it is not known at this time if inductor hum will be introduced or not. YMMV. Likewise, with the T Rex FTC AC power connection on the right side instead of the front end (such as a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 device), the PedalTrain-supplied mounting brackets for a PT-2 do not fit the T Rex FTC. The solution is to buy a package of PT-2 Universal Brackets for an additional $12.95 and install the T Rex FTC utilizing one of these brackets, and one of the original PedalTrain-supplied brackets. If the person who purchases a T Rex FTC follows certain installation procedures, such as using two pieces of sandwiched corrugated cardboard so that the T Rex FTC is raised to a height where the brackets can effectively hold the T Rex FTC in place, The power supply can be installed with greater ease. Rather than employing plywood for this task, try the corrugated cardboard instead. You may want to try placing a small 3/8" or slightly larger piece of plywood behind the T Rex to help secure the power supply in place within the brackets. Kind of unkempt looking, but it is functional and will keep your power supply from straying while inside the brackets. All this being said, the T Rex Fuel Tank Classic received 4 stars for the number of output jack, but the design and installation problems took away from receiving higher accolades. By contrast, the high quality tone within the signal chain added to the rating of 4 stars. With some good TC Electronic effects and overdrive, the ambient noise in the signal chain is almost silent except for residual amp hum when guitar volume is increased (read: dimed). Your mileage may vary regards use of a wah if you are left-footed as am I; right-footed guitarists may not have any wah inductor hum problems at all.
