A good studio tool

Unlike a ART DPS I liked this preamp on vocal tracks. I found this mic preamp to be a solid all around project studio tool. I did not find the preamp to be anything spectacular for any particular application but if you need a good all around preamp this may work for you. The preamp does provide a significant mount of noise free amplification but it did not seem to really make anything seem warm. It is not a good mic preamp if you like a clear transparent sound. On the bright side I found that the preamp did not seem to muddy up a mix after adding more than 12 tracks making this a handy tool to have in the studio.

Nice mic-preamp for the money

I needed a good, all-around mic preamp for my project studio and I'm pretty limited on budget. The Studio Projects VTB-1 has fit the bill perfectly. It works well for tracking vocals and the tube blend adds a nice warmth. It also works reasonably well as a DI box. These are my two main studio needs for a preamp and this does the job nicely. It can provide a really clean, crisp sound if you turn the tube blend knob all the way down and dialing from 0 - 50% tube blend adds in a nice warmth. That describes, from my perspective, the effective range of the product, from clean and crisp to moderately warm. It's a versatile and well-made piece of studio gear for a great price.

Best features in its price class, sounds good too!

This a fantastic preamp, for its price. Great instrument in for bass DI, nice on keys as well. HPF is perfectly positioned at 70Hz. Tube blend is nice, but also nice is being able to dial it all the way to the left for pure solid state action if your project so calls for it. Metering on both input and output is a great plus. Impedence switching for old school ribbon mics is another fantastic feature. Its also nice that they provided a polarity reverse button. It has this nice vibe to it, that some of my more expensive pres don't have. Its plain silly not to have a pair of these in your arsenal, for those that are just beginng there studio adventures.
