Overview

One of the greatest drummers in music history has unveiled a highly limited collection of artwork built from rhythm. Steve Smith, known for his influential catalog of work with Journey and Vital Information, created "Banyan" through the new medium of capturing rhythmic performance and putting it to canvas in a debut collection called "The Fabric of Rhythm."
Highly limited, there are a total of 20 Banyan pieces available in the edition, all are numbered and individually signed by Steve Smith.
On the work, Steve Smith states:
"I have a fascination with Indian rhythms and have been studying and performing Indian rhythms since 2002. This piece brings to mind the structure and shape of the Banyan tree, the national tree of India. The Banyan tree is an epiphyte, which is a plant that grows on another plant. I relate to that concept when it comes to the way I approach Indian rhythms. My rhythmic foundation is that of a U.S. drummer and the Indian rhythms that I use grow from, and are an extension of, my own musical roots."

About Steve Smith
Best known for his work as the drummer for Journey and Vital Information, Steve Smith grew up in the Boston area and started playing drums at the age of 9 in 1963. He studied music at the Berklee College of Music from 1972 to 1976. Over the past 35 years he has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz and rock - appearing on recordings that have sold 100 million copies worldwide - including Journey, Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey, Zucchero and Jean-Luc Ponty.

Steve Smith was recently voted #1 Fusion Drummer in the 2012 Modern Drummer Readers Poll. Smith has previously been voted #1 All-Around Drummer in the Modern Drummer Magazine Readers Poll for five consecutive years from 1987-1991. The 2008, 2009, and 2010 Drum! Magazine Readers Poll voted Smith #1 Jazz Drummer. In 2001, Steve was named by Modern Drummer Magazine as one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time.

In 2013, Steve Smith took on a new medium with his first collection of artwork titled "The Fabric of Rhythm." Working with art team SceneFour, the collection featured visuals crafted from a new medium led by drummers, "Rhythm-on-Canvas."
