Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Full disclosure, I almost never write reviews and am typically a 'name brand only' player. My main bass is a MM Stingray 5. I was looking for a 4-string bass because...well, there is no real reason, I just wanted one! The old adage is correct. Just go to the store and play a bunch of basses. The right one will present itself. I went to my local GC, fully convinced that I wanted a MIM Fender Jazz Bass. I tried pretty much every bass in stock. The SUB4 really stood out. There was such a small difference between the Stingray and SUB4, it was amazing. There is a difference but for less than $300 out the door, this bass is an absolutely amazing value. Don't take my word for it though. Try it yourself!

    Excellent Product!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Over the weekend, I purchased this model by Sterling by Music Man, and I was absolutely blown away! The tone was exactly what I wanted and I was astounded by how much this bass costs at only 279.99! This was my upgrade from an Ibanez bass I had for almost 5 years, and I was not disappointed. I play punk rock and alternative music and this bass suits the tone well, I love how the knobs have a lowest, highest and a middle fixed level. I'm sure there's a name for that, but I'll look into it more. Out of the bag, I loved the slender neck and I had no problem going from fret to fret. It has a really nice feel! So if you're on a budget and love a nice bright tone on your bass, the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 bass is probably your best option!

    GREAT Bass for the price

    By Kurt Rosenbaum

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I started as a bassist back in 86'. 6 years later, i switched to mainly to guitar. but i always had a bass handy, and still loved playing bass. recently i've had a desire to start playing bass more frequently. have ALWAYS loved the Stingray Musicman. someone told me to check out the sterlings. glad i did. the price of this bass is about the same as the price of my first bass i bought back in 86'!! only difference is the quality of the Sterling is far superior than my old Ario Pro II Cat Bass. the satin neck is nice and smooth and comfortable to play. i have the black body with all maple neck. nice solid hardware. the action as is great. the pickup is great, nice punchy snappy tone. unplugged the bass is LOUD. take it from someone who has been playing bass for a very long time, i can tell you, beginner or pro, you gotta try one of these. you'll be floored at the quality, playability, and tone. my next purchase will either be a Squier Jazz Fretless, or the Sterling 5 string. shoot, maybe BOTH, at these rock bottom prices.

    wow.... all I can say.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I was really skeptical of this bass at first. I've always loved Fenders (mostly Jazz) and Rickenbacher basses over the past 20 years. I've never owned an active bass... or any type of "Stingray" style bass. I watched a few youtube reviews on it and decided to give it a try at my local Guitar Center. Wow. It is LIGHT, the lightest I've ever owned. The neck is a lot like a Jazz neck and it has a great smooth satin finish. I've gotten the action down to the point that I would say it ties or is even a pinch better than my 70's Japanese Jazz Bass Reissue that I played for years. No fret buzz issues and solid tuning heads. The sound... this is where I was the most impressed. I was really worried about only having 1 pickup since my Epiphone EB-0 bass sounds like horrible mud, dipped in more mud. I honestly must say it has that deep growl I was always looking for out of my jazz basses. I would definitely buy one of these before an Squier or low-end Fender. Maybe I got lucky?

    Something is missing.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I picked up this model simply because SUB Ray 4 was sold out in the store. This bass is lighter than Ray 4 and sounds a bit brighter than Ray 4, too. Action was good( not too low, not too high), over all setup was good. There was no intonation problem at all from the start, which is very good. This was my first bass guitar made from Indonesia, so I as little worried but they do make very good quality guitar. I only had 3 problems with this bass. 1, fret finish was rough at the edge, I had to sand it down, because it almost cut my fingers. At least, that's how it felt. 2, The original strings started to bleed black stuff, like oil stain after 4 months. Never seen such a thing in my 30 some years of my life. I had to buy new set of strings, which made it sound even brighter than before.(Erie ball super slinky .45-100, which is OE for MM Sterling Bass) 3, This is an imitation of MM Sterling Bass, not String Ray. However, it sounds too bright. It does have very good pre-amp+EQ, but I couldn't get over the brightness of the sounds. I will eventually buy a Stingray imitation. Overall, this is a whole lot of bass for the price. I would recommend it to any beginning bassist.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I've played almost all the vintage "untouchables". I wouldn't trade this for any of them (except to sell the vintage and by a 6-pack of these). Seriously this is a fine instrument. Outstanding value. Incredible playability. Plenty of tonal options. Fastest full-scale neck I've ever played. Rings for days. Can be fat as pig or hardcore punchy. This is a workhorse of a bass. You wont be sorry you bought it.

    Great bass for the price

    By Byung Kook

    from Centreville, VA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Features: Active EQ with boost and cut. This one does not have active pickup. Maple neck, Single humbucker with Ceramic magnet. Very good action and heavy duty tuner and bridge. Quality & Reliability: Now, I had this bass for about 3 months, I think I am ready to give few words. Build quality is very solid, I think MM picked a right company in Indonesia to build their budget model. However, like many of the budget build, attention to detail is missing here. But then again this is sub bass we are talking about here. I may be asking too much. First of all, the edge of fret board is very rough. Some of the fret edges are actually sharp to touch, which I have filled them. Unlike the higher model such as Ray 34, this one never got the "blessing" from the MM factory in CA, so expect some minor kink, sorta. I have straighten the neck, made couple adjustments on string action and pickup hight. It plays and sounds like MM Sterling. I mean this guitar sounds better than other basses that cost 2-3 times more. You will love the MM designed active EQ. You can tailor from fat finger tone to jumping out of mix slap and Earth shaking heavy rock pick style with breeze. I will recommend that you should visit one of the store and just try it out. Make sure you have cash in hand to buy it, too. You will want this bass, once you play it. Look & Feel: It looks like MM Sterling. Even though it does have narrower body, I love it. I have and had Yamaha RBX300 series and Ibanez Ergodyne Series, so I know heavy. This one is not bad as far as weight is concern. My only complain was the neck. I thought the maple neck was finished with polyurethane. But I may be dead wrong. My thumb will get stuck once it gets little sweaty. You will want to polish that neck over and over to get that smooth slide. Finger board feels great. Pick up output is very high. Did I mention it has ceramic magnet? Very hot~!. I have never used my volume nob beyond 40-50%. At full volume, it will create it's own distortion. I do prefer alnico magnet pickups, but this is based on Sterling, not Stingray. Sterling has ceramic and Stingray has alnico. If some one tell you one's better than the other, they are dead wrong. It is just a mere preference. Did I mention this bass has unforgettable slap tone? It is just awesome.

Compare to Basses Costing $1000s More

    By Neal Gold

    from Laurel, Maryland

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

First thing you'll notice is the balanced body and neck, and that it's barely heavier than a Stratocaster. The thinner, satin-smooth neck does nothing to impact the wonderfully throaty and bone-crunching power of this bass. To me the beauty of this instrument is that it's not as fussy-looking as a lot of active-pup basses can be. Simple, direct and very fun to play. I had planned on spending 2 hours at the nearest GC to find a modestly-priced fretted bass and literally cut the visit to an hour, after I plugged this one in and took it through its paces. The active humbucker has very responsive treble and bass EQs that shape tone dramatically or subtlely. I'm not prone to exaggeration, seriously, but if you know that what's important in any instrument is its tone, playability and reliability rather than its pedigree then you owe it to yourself to closely audition this bass. In my life I've never been so impressed with an instrument at this price brimming with such fit and feel. You know how you pick up an axe and check out the price, only to say to yourself, "yep, this is definitely a cheapo?" Well, this is NOT that axe.

    good bass

    By andres luna

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. SB4 Electric Bass Guitar:

needed a bass i could use for band practice and around the house. The bass really impressed me for what i paid for it. The action is good and the neck feels good. The bass is really loud due to the active pre-amp and humbucker pick up. Sound wise i wouldn't compare it to my other basses (Geddy lee Fender Jazz, Warwick Corvette and Jackson concert Bass)but the sound is good and punchy. Gonna use it for mu week end rock gig. I would easily pick up one before a Squire Bass or other basses in this price range.
