Overview

The S.U.B. Series family of instruments introduce a new level of quality, features and value for the beginning or intermediate player. Part of the esteemed Music Man & Sterling by Music Man family of instruments, Sterling by Music Man feel all players should have access to affordable basses that feel, sound and play like a refined, crafted professional instrument. The best components, hardware and designs all work in harmony to give you the best user experience as you discover your sound. The goal is to deliver an instrument at a price that surpasses your expectations.

The Ray5 bass is the cousin of the Music Man StingRay 5 bass. Classic, iconic instruments that defined a generation of bassists since the late '70s. Active electronics, low-noise humbucking pickups, rock-solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected. They start with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy-to-play, full-scale maple neck. A 45 mm nut width was created for easy playability. Medium-jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

S.U.B. Series Bass Boast Great Tone Shaping Features
The tone is shaped by the onboard active 2-band preamp. Controls for volume, bass and treble offer maximum flexibility in finding your sound. Full cut and boost of bass and treble frequencies. The wide range of tones, guarantee you will find your sound, for any musical situation.

Quality Construction
Sterling by Music Man wants your bass to last a lifetime. Superior design and construction are key to delivering a solid instrument that will accompany you on your long musical journey. All S.U.B. basses employ a superior 6-bolt neck joint. The 6-bolt neck joint, designed by Music Man, offers strength, stability and great tone transfer. The neck stays in position and won't shift under heavy load. The neck heel allows easy access to the higher end of the fingerboard and is unobtrusive, allowing your hands to freely move about the neck with ease. Rest assured, your neck will stay put while your fingers roam about.

High-Output Humbucking Pickup
The high-output humbucking pickup was designed for clarity and true reproduction of the basses natural tone, with minimal coloration. Two rows of large magnetic pole pieces pump the strings information into the pickup, feeding the 2-band active preamp. Tones can be aggressive, wild or mild. Its up to you to find your sound. Three screw adjustment allow for more accurate positioning of the pickups angle & height, allowing for more precise adjustments to match the strings angle.

Satin Finished Neck
The feel of the neck is everything. Your fretting hand is touching the neck 100% of the time you play your bass. Sterling by Music Man developed a super smooth satin finish for the back of the neck. This finish is non-glossy, never get's sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel.

Neck Adjustments
All stringed instruments need some basic adjustments from time to time. Neck adjustments can be intimidating for some. S.U.B. makes it easy and simple. S.U.B. Series basses have an easy-to-adjust neck. No specialized tools are needed. The small thumbwheel located at the end of the fingerboard makes it easy and simple. You can use a small screwdriver or the included chrome bar to easily and quickly adjust the neck to your preference. No need to remove the neck or strings, you can make the adjustments on the fly. Easy, quick, convenient. More time to play, less time making adjustments.

Top Mounted Output Jack
No more fumbling trying to plug in the cable. The output jack is conveniently placed on top of the body. Located on the control plate, the jack is secure and won't easily pull out or get damaged when placed in a guitar stand. Sterling by Music Man uses a heavy-duty jack that is designed to withstand plenty of use and abuse.

Battery
The 2-band active preamp is powered by a 9-volt battery. The easy-to-open battery compartment makes battery changes easy and simple. Simply flip up the battery door, unclip the 9-volt from the clip and clip in your new battery. Takes no time at all. The battery is easily accessible on the back of the body. Your battery should last for several months under normal use. Sterling by Music Man recommends you unplug the cable when not in use, to conserve on the batteries life span.

Great value in a budget-minded 5-string Bass

By Samuel

from Rockford, IL

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I acquired this 5-string a few weeks ago to replace an Ibanez 5-string that I regretfully traded in several years back. Now that I am playing out again after a few years off, I realized that I needed the extra lows of a 5-string, and this Sterling by MM delivers; I think it feels, sounds, and plays as well as the Ibanez that I previously owned, and I purchased this at less than half the price! This is my first Sterling by MM Stingray, and I really like the tones I can get with this bass. The B-string low is pretty clear and not at all muddy; tone shaping and tweaking are easy with the 2-band EQ (low and treble cut/boost). I can get a crisp cutting tone for rock, a smooth jazz or blues sound, and some sweet funk tones if I feel like slap bass. Overall, I am most impressed. There are a few problems though, as this is a budget-minded bass and corners have been cut to keep the price low. Quality control is not as good as what I have heard about the Sterling line (the more expensive line between the Music Man series and this Sterling by MM series). The frets edges, especially on the low B side of the neck from the 12th or 13th fret on up, are REALLY sharp in places. The edges on the high G side are also sharp in places, especially past the 12th fret. These can be filed down, but the whole neck has to be removed and the frets filed and dressed properly, which will cost mucho dinero that I don't want to spend right now. In addition, the Allen screws on the bridge protrude quite far from the top of the bridge saddles, especially on the D and G string saddles, and if I am not careful, I'll cut the fleshy part of my hand when using a pick for playing straight-ahead rock 16th and 32nd notes. However, I can live with these problems and am pleased with this bass.

Awesome 5 String for price

By Kevin Cunningham

from Providence, RI

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I've played many basses over 35+ years and for the little money, this SUB is fantastic. A nice smooth, thin neck, simple controls. The pickup and bridge are solid. After an update to the set up I can see me playing this bass for a long time. It plays much better that basses 5x it's cost

Just got one

By jeffrey gandolfi

from Whitinville Ma

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I just got a Sterling Sub 4string and tried everything in the store against it @ your Millbury Ma store. Anything close to its price range sounded dull, had small setup issues and frankly didn't fit or balance well on my lap. Ive owned Fender, Ibanez, custom made Carvins, original Stingrays, Alvarez, and have played all the others brands in stores over my career as a Bassist {29 Yrs}. This little monster smoked the competition by leaps and bounds. It sounds so much like the original I dare anyone blindfolded to guess USA model and this SUB! Light, quick, super punchy and deep. Im smiling ear to ear and I dont have to worry about it getting ripped off because to gear heads its a "Copy". Love this bass!!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I got this bass a few months ago along with a Fender Rumble 30W and I LOVE it. I took it home and plugged it in and started playing something and it sounded amazing. The versatility is endless. I've played Metallica, Green Day, the Foo Fighters, and the Beatles. I just can't believe how awesome this bass is.

Not a real StingRay but close

By DAVID DESMOND

from Naples FL

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I have played bass for 49 years and after playing Fenders for 30 plus years, I switched to MusicMan StingRay 5's for the last 10 years-they were designed by Leo Fender so I guess it still is a rel Fender anyways. I am playing in Florida and have been using my very expensive StingRay 5 HH. Sometimes we play outdoors and sometimes the guitarist in my band slams into me. I purchased this fake StingRay so my expensive one would last longer. It sounds good but It is NOT a real StingRay. It does not have the phantom coil pickup. The neck is a little fatter. The body is lighter because it is not the same wood. Other than that it is a decent bass and I am going to use it as a beater. Also, it is available from Guitar Center in black with a maple neck while you cant get that from any other store in the USA. The frets have bad burrs and they will tear your hands apart so plan on having someone who knows how to file the ends down before you start playing this thing. Also watch for imperfections in the paint on the body. I tried one at the Fort Worth, FL store and as usual the bass had already been scratched up and beat on by the kids who try them out. The same thing happened with my $1900 StingRay HH. I am looking forward to gigging with this bass. It is lighter than my Ray HH and if I scratch it up it is better than wrecking my bass that costs 10 times more than what I paid for this one. I give I a thumbs up and it is an excellent almost Stingray.

Long awaited and Well Executed Entry Level ErnieBall MusicMan Bass

By Michael West _

from Williamstown, NJ

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I arrived at this bass backwards. I already owned 2 MusicMan StingRay 4s and a Sterling by MusicMan SB14. In that order. When I went about adding a 5 string, I first picked up a second hand Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass V Active. Then I got this one. This is an extremely well executed entry level bass. The neck is terrific, fast, great action right out of the store. Fretwork is very, very good. In this price range, I'm used to seeing the old sharp edges problem. Not here. The string spacing is on the tighter side. Finger style and picking are a breeze. The Squier has a 2+ inch nut (and larger string spacing). I'd be comparing Apples to Oranges if tried to say one was better than the other. I found that slapping style on the Squier was easier; again, coming from a 4, the relatively tight 5 spacing was an adjustment. The bass build quality is very good. I've found no obvious flaws. Finish is fine, and the neck (again, I must love the neck. Yeah, I do!) finish is different from either of its Big Cousins. I replaced the stock black knobs with chrome knobs (I just happened to have some chrome knobs laying around and I think it looks better). The pickguard has some very slightly noticeable 'waves' to it; it's likely a less thick plastic being used. Similarly, the tuners, the bridge, the knobs are all of ... 'entry level' ... quality. That's not saying they're bad. They're entry. Similarly, the 9V compartment has the clip-on style battery connector, not the drop-in kind. This bass is surprisingly light! I can't find exact measurements online, but it sure looks thinner (front to back) than the EBMM. And it's way lighter than either of my 4 strings. You could definitely get through every set with this without much strain. What does it sound like? Great! The 2 band (notched!) Active EQ is terrific, sensitive, and easy to dial in a very good tone. You can get some nice growly aggressive sounds, or you can roll off the top and get some good solid thumping sounds. And anywhere in between. So what's wrong with it? Nothing. Well, except the stock strings, I really don't like them. I know strings you just buy and use and blah. But I mention this because when a beginner or other bassist new to the brand picked this up, they might be instantly turned off because of them. Don't be. Finally, I hate to disappoint you, but you are not getting a MusicMan StingRay at this price. Anyone comparing this pound for pound to an EBMM isn't comparing Apples to Oranges. They're not even comparing Apples to Motor Oil. This bass does not have the mass required for that full on tone, nevermind the other finishing touches that distinguish the higher priced instruments. Neither is it an OLP, by the way. This is far superior to that instrument in every aspect. I couldn't possibly recommend you buy an OLP - even used - over this. Save up the few extra $$ and get this if that's your mindset. We have to finally judge this on a) it's fabulously playable b) sounds really good to us and c) THE PRICE! This instrument is about building a relationship over time with the musician, by offering a superb value to get started, and a clear and beautiful path forward. This is not about trying to undercut their own top of the line products.

Excellent Bass

By Tim DeVries

from Lancaster, PA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

When I first saw this bass, I wasn't too impressed. It seemed like every other cheap bass that was there. However, after I picked it up and started playing it, I realized I was falling in love with the sound, the feel, and the price. It was only three weeks later that I came back to my local shop and purchased it. It's got great tone, great feel, and the price is unmatched. I'm typically a Fender advocate, but this bass just grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. The active pickup has enough attack to make it punchy, but can really get nice a mellow with a beautiful warm sound. A friend of mine said that it was just about as good as his Lakland 55-05, just without the tone variability of two pickups. This is an absolutely fantastic bass.

Finally: High Quality at a Very Modest Price

    By Neal Gold

    from Laurel, Maryland

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

Before I start, I confess that I bought this bass' baby brother, the SB4, simply because I don't have the kind of amp that would take full advantage of the low B string. That being said, I must give credit when it's due: this bass is one of the best I've ever laid my hands on...and I've played a few, from Gibson EB0 to Yamaha BB series to Fender Jazz and J-bass fretless, even Hohner and Ibanez (which I loved). The Sterling Ray5 is a tight, ballsy, growling version of the REALLY spendy MM models. I judge a musical instrument by, in order: 1. Tone; 2. Ease of play and ease of use of controls; 3. Reliability (well-designed and well-constructed workhorse). This line of basses from MM/Sterling deliver all three. If you can't find your tone on this bass you're hopeless. The controls work smoothly with no scratchy pots and are very simple to learn and to access. The axe is built like a top of the line Fender or MM. And did I mention that to-die-for MM TONE??? Get one of these at the price advertised above, and you have SCORED BIG TIME!

    S.U.B. Ray5 Bass Guitar Black

    By Michael Symonette

    from Atlanta, Ga

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

Okay here goes, I'm 30 year Fender, 3 year Ibanez BTB bass player. Being the old die hard Fender man that I am after receiving my new MusicMan S.U.B Ray 5 black, at first I was very disappointed when I first picked it up because it felt like a pillow almost compared to my other axe's. To my surprise when I fired it up I was astounded that anything this light(8Lbs) could sound this good. This was my first MM bass and I am shocked. The tone is a killer, for the price this is unreal. I am a stickler for that old Motown bottom and boom, even with the supplied strings it killed my modified preamp' ed Fender Active Deluxe, Fender Squier Modded Active Deluxe V and my Peavey Millennium V. This does not make sense to me. I mainly purchased it for it's light weight as the other basses are now starting to kill the old man's shoulder. I am no expert or guru, but I love this so called (S.U.B) MusicMan Stingray and the neck with my kind of small hands is heaven sent. Get one, you'll be shocked. That's enough, I must be having a Motown flashback.

    Just..... WOW

    By John Patitucci

    from Dallas, Texas

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

All I can say is WOW!! I have been playing for 25 years. I've played a lot of basses, both expensive and cheap. What I have to say is that this is the best bang for the buck! It's cheaper than the first bass that I got 25 years ago and it's easily double the worth in craftsmanship and playability! I just bought this a couple weeks ago. I've had to get used to playing hot pickups. I doubled this with a Behringer BDI21 and I can say that the tones I can get out of this is just phenomenal! Great balance and feel. The neck is smooth and fast. It's a little chunky toward the headstock, but it's not a problem for my big hands. 5 Stars!! I'd give ten, but.....

    Great bass, great value

    By Frederick Roberts

    from Newport News, VA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

This 5-string bass puts out great tone, great volume, plays well, but costs much less than what one would expect. I was shopping for a mid-level 5-string bass of good quality, around the $750 range, to play in my church's worship band. The Yamaha 4-string that I played put out little volume and was getting drowned in the mix. I needed an upgrade, and I wanted the extended range of the 5th string. I checked out Reverend, Fender, and Schecter 5-strings, among others. The Schecter played well, but the strings were too close together. The Reverend and Fender were outside my price range. A salesperson at Guitar Center's Virginia Beach store owns this Sterling model and strongly recommended it to me. After comparing this bass to the others, my wife and I were sold! The separate bass and treble controls deliver the sound that I want without complications. And I paid less than half than what I planned to spend! My sound guy owns a Fender Jazz bass and was impressed with the sound and quality of my new axe! I play this bass just about every week now.

    Great budget Musicman sound.

    By RICHARD MILLIGAN

    from Clinton Township

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I forgot to write this review. I got this bass a few months ago. I wanted to have the Musicman sound in my arsenal but I didn't want to spent a ton. (Mortgage payment lol) Since the pickup is ceramic, I had to seriously lower the pickup so it won't overpower my other basses. It's still very powerful. There are some uneven frets. The fret edges are sharp but it's very close to the real thing. The B string sounds as good as a $2000 bass to me. I don't know how they did that. The bass has so much low end that I back the bass knob just a bit from the center click so that it will sound close to my other basses. I got the black with maple neck. Looks real good. This is a good way to get very close to the Musicman sound and not spend a fortune especially if it's not your usual tone and therefore it won't be your main bass.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I got this bass a few months ago after I got fed up with my Yamaha BB615. Since I usually keep one 5 string in my arsenal, I needed something else. I found the SUB35 at Guitar Center in Pittsburgh, Pa and they took care of me. After trying this bass out, I really, really liked it. for the price, I couldn't beat it. They took my Yamaha on trade and I got this bass. I have used it on a couple of gigs and it shines through, it makes me want a real Stingray 5.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

This is a great bass. It sounds a plays beautiful. I have had a Yamaha JM2 John Myung signature that was fantastic. Loved that bass, but it used an awful lot of batteries for the preamp. So I traded it straight up at GC for an Ibanez Soundgear series bass, which at the time I thought would be great, but it turned out not so good for me. When these basses came out I had my Ibanez which didn't really felt right for me and some, but not a lot of money to spend. I took the Ibanez as a trade to guitarcenter and picked one of these off the wall, plugged it in, EQ flat, no idea what that amp was dialed in to and boom! Sounded and played fantastic. I ended up trading the Ibanez, paid a few extra bucks and took it home. No additional setup or anything. Never regretted it since. I love playing this bass. I play it through an MXR M80 D.I. in the studio and through an Ampeg head with a 4X10 GK cab live. Sounds great. No issues. The Battery Live is fantastic and it looks killer. If you like rock n' roll you gonna love this bass. I like it so much I bought a 4 string version two years ago in the seethrough, flat black just because I wanted to add another 4 string to my arsenal besides my old Fender P-Bass to preserve that bass. In my opinion, even if you have the money for a more high end bass, don't hesitate to give one of these a try. It might safe you some money you can put towards some other gear.

I recently purchased a SUB 5 string and was pleasantly suprised with the sound and playability it has.It was suggested by fellow musicans to try an Ibanez 405 sdgr.,I was not impressed, so I went back to the store and picked up this bass,WOW, much smoother playing and the sound crazy good, and for less. I have played lots of fenders in my day, but didn't want another. I actually play a Pedula but needed a second for some of the ddt tunes, but this bass is so fun to play, I may pick up another at this price and use my ped. for studio work. Best Bass Under $800

    By Jeremy Daniell

    from Atlanta

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I shopped around for several months trying to find the best guitar on a college student budget. It finally came down to this guitar and a Squier Deluxe Jazz Active V. Then I played them both in the store and the S.U.B. Ray5 blew the Squier out of the water. It has great tone and the active pickup is hot so it definitely takes the amp up to 11. I have used it for several genres now (Jazz, Rock, Funk, and Metal), and it rocks out in all of them. The only thing I would change to this guitar is making the body heavier because the neck has a good bit of weight in it and the guitar teeters a bit. However for all wanting the perfect bass that makes the wallet and musical senses happy, I would recommend this guitar every time hands down.

I picked this up for my first 5 string after careful consideration. Also, the guy at the bass counter recommended this bass and I was not disappointed. To me this is a must have bass for anybodies arsenal. Cannot be beat for the price.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

The Sterling SUB 5 has all the essential tones needed to play ANY commercial music style (Rock,Funk/R&B, Latin, Jazz, International Folk, etc.). This instrument is well balanced, light weight, and plays like a dream with extra light strings and lowered action. A great bass purchase for all levels.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this 5 string to upgrade from my Dean 4 string bass, didn't have a problem with it until a year in half using it until the pre-amp failed. I really liked the tone, feel and ease of use, but as for electronics...not sure if the quality was just left out.
