Overview

The S.U.B. Series family of instruments introduce a new level of quality, features and value for the beginning or intermediate player. Part of the esteemed Music Man & Sterling by Music Man family of instruments, Sterling Music Man feels all players should have access to affordable guitars and basses that feel, sound and play like a refined, crafted professional instrument.

The best components, hardware and designs all work in harmony to give you the best user experience as you discover your sound. Our goal is to deliver an instrument, at a price that surpasses your expectations.

The Ray4 and Ray5 basses are the cousins of the Music Man StingRay 4 and 5 basses. Classic, iconic instruments that defined a generation of bassists since the late '70s. Active electronics, low-noise humbucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected.

Music Man starts with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A 38 mm nut width (Ray4) and 45mm nut width (Ray5) was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

I can't say enough about how much I love this bass. I bought this as an upgrade from my Squier Affinity P-Bass, and I couldn't be happier. I had a $600 budget to spend on a new bass, and checked out my fair share, but kept coming back to this one. It looks awesome, plays great, the neck is very comfortable (I prefer a slimmer neck and satin finish, so this is a dream). I have been using this with my band for the last 6 months, played many gigs and recorded with it, and it is just a workhorse. The pickup sounds pretty good, and the onboard pre-amp with treble and bass boost/cut is a great feature when I need to add a little more bottom end, or up the treble to help cut through the mix.

It came with a decent setup, but I immediately put new strings on and gave it a full set up when I got home. After some fine tuning it's one of the best feeling basses I've ever played. I'd recommend this bass to anybody of any skill level. It's just an all around great instrument, and for the price, I don't think there is anything out there that comes close. I'll be buying another one soon to use as a backup and/or alternate tunings.

Electronic issues with pickup and volume cutting in and out.Poor warranty policy. Make sure you get pro coverage if you want guitar center to take care of any issues you might have. I had issues under warranty but no pro coverage, so Sterling which is actually a Music Man design contracted thru Praxis music in California, was requiring me to pay to ship it to them for warranty repairs and will not authorize anyone else but themselves for warranty repairs. And no, you will not be reimbursed for the initial shipping. When i asked why they wouldnt pay for all the shipping, they responded "we dont do that".So don't expect any help from Music Man either. Bottom line, any costs incurred in warranty issues should be solely on the manufacturer, guess not with Sterling by Music Man contracted thru Praxis.

Great Bass! Save yourself a fortune and get one of these!

By Gavin Olson

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Yes there are fancier, more expensive basses out there but this ray4 delivers the goods with the best of them. I had been shopping around for a bass off and on for the better part of a year and stumbled upon this bass and immediatly knew this was the one. The active preamp and eq provides great tone shaping options. The wood and finish is top notch. The bass has some weight to it but vertainly wont break your back but it doesnt sacrifice quality tone for lightness. Thes smaller neck is great for smaller hands (which I have)and make it an easy bass to play. I feel its a great bass for many styles of music. I personally play punk/hardcore and post-rock stuff and this provides great bottom end for both without sounding out of place. I really couldnt be happier I got a killer bass thats fun to play at a price that didnt break the bank. My only suggestion would beto swap out the stock strings with a new set (but thats pretty much a given with any off the wall purchase)

Everyone should own this bass!!

By ANDY DUNN

from Albuquerque NM

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

This is a great bass! To start off it really sounds like a Music Man Stingray. Most basses in this price range look like their big brothers (Squier/ Fender) but they never really have that great of a sound. Second, with only a couple twists of the truss rod and and a few adjustments to the saddles it played like butter. Once again usually when you spend between $200-$300 on a bass you will have to live with the fact that its probably going to play like a 2X4. This bass has a nice low cut nut, level frets, and a really straight neck. Overall the main reason I picked it up in the first place was because I just wanted a good basic bass in my studio for my students to be able to use but after I set it up I have not been able to stop playing it myself. So if you are a beginner looking for a good bass to get going on THIS IS IT!! If you are a intermediate to advanced player this will make a great back up bass for any gig. All in all I have been a huge fan of Music Man Basses for a long time and I was absolutely blown away by the price and quality of this instrument. Like I said in the title of this review, everyone should own this bass!! Also, If you have never played or heard a Music Man they are really good for any genre of music but they work great for rock and funk (especially if you use a slap style of playing). This is because the one humbucker near the bridge gives you a really bright and boomy tone. The only thing these basses tend to lack in when it comes to tone is the mid range. But in my opinion if they had a heavier mid range they wouldn't be a Music Man. Finally if you are going to pick this bass up, buy some new strings and either set it up yourself or have a tech set it up. You will not get the full potential out of this bass if you play with the factory strings and set up.

Unbelievable bass.

By Richard Milligan

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I tried this bass out in the store about 2 weeks ago and it sounded real good but they usually do in the store. I'm usually a maple neck guy but the rosewood board and walnut stain on this on really grew on me so I took the chance and picked it up. This bass is unbelievable!! The neck is like butter. The humbucker is ceramic. Ceramic magnet pickups aren't for everyone but they're REALLY powerful so I have to back the pickup all the way down as to not overpower my Fenders, which are active like this one. I've been playing for 40 years and I've also had Warwick and Spector and let me tell you this bass is right up there with them. I play it though a Hartke Kickback 12 and I just stand there in disbelief at the full range on tone. And that's with the EQ flat!! Still can't believe how much bass you get and what a low price these are sold for. Get one!!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Looking for a new "beater" bass because I had some extra ca$h in my pockets, I ventured into my local Guitar Center and plugged in a few basses not only in this price range, but some up to and over $700-800. I can say that I kept coming back to the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 due to feel AND sound. I've always been intrigued by the look of the whole Music Man line of basses, and for a quality instrument in this price range, this is a steal! I do not want to go into too much boring detail, but I can tell you that after just a couple of weeks that this bass has improved my playing because the notes are so clear (yet with that awesome Ray growl!) and the neck is so comfortable. I chose the Black Satin model and just love this bass to death. I am an experienced player and can tell you that in over 20 years of playing assorted basses that I am hard pressed to think of any bass I have owned, played, or seen that comes close to this.

Incredible Tone and Quality at Any Price!

    By BUD IZEN

    from Eugene, Oregon

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I was in the Northridge G.C. just looking around when I saw this really pretty bass that looked to be some sort of MusicMan (MM) clone. Taking it off the rack, it turned out to be a legit. clone of my vintage circa 1979-80 MM Stingray, right down to the two-band preamp. Considerably lighter than my vintage 'Ray, and about the same weight as my OLP (a company temporarily authorized by E.B. to manufacture passive Stingray clones), I hooked it up to a big Ampeg and put it through it's paces. It was well setup for a demo bass, and the roundwounds made a nice sound, lots of tone. So, I ordered one from the store and had it shipped to my home in Oregon, saving me shipping and tax, and they were also running a promo. The bass arrived one day after I got home, perfect timing, and came out of the box in better setup than the demo I played in Northridge. The nut was perfectly centered, the action was low, and the intonation was close, although I didn't expect it to be perfect. Playing through my own rig (All Carvin - BX1500 amp, 4x10 redeye w/ tweeter, 1x18), it sounded every bit as good as my vintage 'Ray, without the extra shoulder-killing weight. (I had made my own 5" wide leather strap to make the Stingray more bearable.) The finish was perfect (Satin Walnut)as well. I have an assortment of basses, mostly fretless, but I bought this one specifically for my second band, as I sing more and don't want to have to work so hard on (bass) intonation. The frets on the bass were totally finished smooth. The overall quality compares to anything I own or have ever owned. The sound cuts through the mix just like a "real" Stingray. In conclusion, if you want that classic Stingray sound at an absolute bargain price without sacrificing any quality, this is the bass for you! Kudos for the guys at Guitar Center Northridge. G.C. always has great service, and these guys went out of their way to make sure I was well taken care of. Highly recommended!

    Mint Green S.U.B. Ray4

    By Allen Sisson

    from Richmond, VA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Ordered the Sterling S.U.B. Ray 4 in Mint Green online and it arrived last night in one very cheap, poorly protected box....yet it arrived in perfect condition. Only slightly out of tune with perfect intonation and string height. It is very light, I am guessing 7 or 8 pounds. The neck is very thin at the nut, thinner than any neck I have played before - and I really like it. Very easy to play - it is so comfortable all the way up and down, it makes it very fun. The frets are clean, no sharp edges. The strings- I was prepared to immediately remove them, but they sound so nice, they are staying on for a while for sure. I will probably give them a month or two and then put on MusicMan Slinky strings (since they were made for their basses). The sound - very articulate? Sound is hard to describe in general, but it has more attack than my other bass, but still keeps the deep end deep, if that makes any sense. The controls really offer several different usable tones with the turn of the dials. The knobs also have indents (none of my other basses do) which is really useful. It is easy to remember where to turn them, like a quarter turn passed the indent, to get back to your favorite outputs. Not a single construction flaw that I can see. Neck pocket is nice and snug, paint job is well done, electronics are great. ETC. Color - I like it - It is very funky, but it is a funky bass, so it works well. At least I like it, the rest of the family is not digging it....too bad for them. I have attached one very poor pic for ya. I will try to record something and send it out.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I've played guitar for a while so I decided to pick up the bass. I first picked a Squier Jaguar just to be safe in case I didn't want to play the bass. Long story short I really enjoy the bass and wanted to step up a little in quality. I walked in and was looking to go with the P bass. I still don't want to step up to a American made Fender. I tried the Mex P bass and was bummed out by it. The construction was shoddy. I grabbed this one and really liked it. For half the price of a Mex P bass I had no hesitation. I changed out the strings and this one blows the Squier away. I get a little fret buzz but that's probably operator error. Real punchy pickup. I may step up to the stingray instead of the American Fender

Great for the price, but a lot of hype.

    By remigio holmes

    from San Diego CA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Up until the S.U.B., I had never bought a bass online and to tell the truth it was a impulse buy partly because on the multiple positive threads on TB. I have never had a bass under $300 NIB so I tried to keep an open mind and just compare it with the used basses for the same price that I could recollect taking the time to look at, but I could not recollect ever taking the the time to really look at one let alone play one. My first impression when was WOW, and then I held it close and really looked at it and the bass almost felt to me that I was holding a super nice toy. I own a Stingray and two Sterlings, I think initially that's why I had that first impression of the SUB. My initial excitement just turned in to an "Oh ok", but in no way disappointment. Right of the bat the differences were apparent right away. In NO way am I comparing the SUB Ray4 to the EBMM Stingray that would be like comparing oranges and banannas. In contrast though the S.U.B. is lighter, the fret dots and the logo I am guessing are thickly silk screened on the neck and head, the frets were a little rough and snaged my fingers when I ran them over and along the edge of the fret board, and I feel the SUB could of come with a substantially better nut. Not what I expected at first, but after thoughtful consideration of what I really should expect from a under $300 NIB bass. The S.U.B. exceeded my expectations. BTW I have never owned a brand new bass, I've only ever owned used/pre loved basses, and I just picked up a 5 string Fender Deluxe for $300. That bass blows the S.U.B. Ray4 away even with the huge dings and cracks in the paint. Also I ordered two S.U.B.'s because of a photo shop I saw on one of the threads on TB, and because it was less to order two. I swaped the maple neck from a black one with the rosewood neck from a walnut one, then I up graded the pickup and the 2 band pre amp (B/T/V) to a 3 band pre amp (B/M/T/V). Now I have a Walnut Satin S.U.B. with a Maple neck with the 1/4" jack mounted in the cornner instead of on the plate. I ended up trading the left over Black S.U.B. with the Rosewood neck and the left over stock electronics to the shop for the work, parts, and a new case for my new S.U.B. so I suppose the S.U.B. Ray4 I ended up with ended up costing me a little more. BTW the pickup I used was the Basslines SMB-4A, the preamp I used was the Baselines STC-3M4, and a jack plate that the shop had laying around. I know there better pickup's and preamp's that I could of used, but I am happy and satisfied with the Basslines components so naysayers just be happy too. Total cost to me $500 and 7 days waiting on UPS plus 3 days waiting for the work to be done.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I am absolutely astounded by the quality of this instrument. Notice I didn't qualify that by saying, "...for this price range". Most basses around this price are lacking in one or more department (sound, feel, look etc.), this one is on point in every way possible. Great feel, nice straight neck, gorgeous finish (I got the mint green one), responsive 2-band eq and the tone, oh my the tone!!! I can't put this bass down! I went into Guitar Center looking for a cheap, beginner bass for which I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg. What I got was eons beyond that and in a price range that didn't put me in the dog house! Do yourself a favor and pick up one of these amazing instruments today!!!

    A Great Bass.

    By David Williams

    from maryland

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I`ve been playing bass awhile and i figured it was time for an upgrade from my first bass. but like most people i didnt want to break the bank on my instrument. I wondered into GC to play some jazz basses, i was actually dead set on getting a fender, maybe go cheap and get the squire as ive heard alot of good things about it and have played around on a few fender and squire jazz basses in store and at friends places so i knew what i wanted. There were a few other models outside of jazz basses i was thinking of looking into playing, however i saw this bass in the walnut finish and it caught my eye. I have always liked this style of bass visually but never really played one. so i figured go ahead and see how it plays since i like the look and pricetag. Sure enough i was impressed. i loved the sound so much more than the fenders i was playing. It has the perfect tone for pop/slap in my opinion and preference, the strings that come with it help give it that beautiful tone plus the control of the tone knob makes for the perfect sound without replacing anything, which is a rare find. but once again the tone was ideal to my preference you might need to tweak it if its not to your liking. If you turn the tone knob all the way youll get a nice warm sound but nothing to far from its orginal funky/poppy tone.id say get some new strings if your not going for that sound and it can fit the bill for rock or metal. Its plays very well and is very comfortable to hold. Its a little on the heavier side maybe 7-10Lbs so id recommend a wide strap. For the price its a great bass for any range of skill and its just alot of fun to play.
