Overview

The S.U.B. Ray4 has been sitting near the top of the bass food chain since the '70s because of it's looks, design, components and of course it's signature sound. Active electronics, low noise hum bucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected. They start with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A narrow 38mm nut width was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

Series basses boast great tone shaping features like the onboard, active 2-band preamp powered by a 9 volt battery that's very easy to change. Controls for volume, bass and treble offer maximum flexibility in finding your sound. Plus it offers full cut & boost of bass & treble frequencies. The wide range of tones, guarantee you will find your sound, for any musical situation. The high output humbucking pickup was designed for clarity and true reproduction of the basses natural tone, with minimal coloration. 2 rows of large magnetic pole pieces pump the strings information into the pickup, feeding the 2 band active preamp. Tones can be aggressive, wild or mild. Its up to you to find your sound. 3 screw adjustment allow for more accurate positioning of the pickups angle & height, allowing for more precise adjustments to match the strings angle.

Sterling by Music Man wants your bass to last a lifetime. Superior design and construction are key to delivering a solid instrument that will accompany you on your long musical journey. All S.U.B. basses employ a superior 6 bolt neck joint. The 6 bolt neck joint, designed by Music Man, offers strength, stability and great tone transfer. The neck stays in position and won't shift under heavy load. The neck heel allows easy access to the higher end of the fingerboard and is unobtrusive, allowing your hands to freely move about the neck with ease. Rest assured, your neck will stay put while your fingers roam about.

The feel of the neck is everything. Your fretting hand is touching the neck 100% of the time you play your bass. Sterling by Music Man developed a super smooth satin finish for the back of the neck. This finish is non glossy, never get's sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel. And S.U.B. makes neck adjustments easy and simple. S.U.B. Series basses have an easy to adjust neck. No specialized tools are needed. The small thumbwheel located at the end of the fingerboard makes it easy and simple. You can use a small screwdriver or the included chrome bar to easily and quickly adjust the neck to your preference. You can make easy, quick, convenient adjustments on the fly.

Nicely Built, Easy Playing & Good Sounding Budget Bass

By Todd Knisley

from Canton OH

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

My Guitar Center salesman talked me into buying this Sterling by Music Man Ray4 Bass. I was going to buy either a Squire-ish P-Bass or Mustang-type thing. He handed me this bass (in a different color) after I admitted to being skeptical about Sterling. It had a nice "feel" and did everything well. I was advised by a bass player buddy of mine the next day that this bass was the best sounding/playing bass under the $700-800ish price point. I special ordered Satin Honeyburst Ray4. It arrived in a few days and I am glad that this is what I chose..

Small Price, Incredible Sound!

By Eduardo Hernandez

from Laredo, Tx.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

Got to tell you, this bass really rocks!, it only had 3 controlers, volume, trebel and bass, and man, you don't need to put all in to hear the incredible tonality this bass kicks in. For the past two years I made the switch from a 4 string bass for a 6 string bass, I loved it, but it was really hard for me to slap because I really got big fingers. I found myself looking for an non-expensive bass but that really had a crunch I found this brand, it might not be "the Music Man", but for a relative, it really does the work. Go ahead, buy it, you won?t regret it.

Great Bass - Excellent tone

By Russell Webster II

from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass after playing it at the GC store in Indy. I'm not a pro, so I'll just list the pros an cons. Pros: The bass is well-built. Perfect weight, constructed properly, beautifully finished. The bass really has only 2 tones, generated by its two-band EQ. The bridge is solid, the neck is fast and smooth, I like the light finish because it doesn't get sweaty and sticky. Tuners hold tune forever, I play it everyday and it's held for 6 weeks. The price is low for its level of quality and tone, and I recommend it to anyone. Truss rod is much more convenient than any Fender bass. Cons: Some minor flaws in the wood selection. Small knots that are visible. The frets could use some dressing, I actually cut my hand on one, filed it down. If you order it, make sure you can adjust the action. It will buzz a bit at first.

Excellent Intermediate Bass

By Russell Webster II

from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

This is a high-quality bass. I call it an intermediate bass because even though the price indicates it's a beginner model, it's of very good quality and it's a well-made instrument. Pros: The electronics are very sensitive and allow you to get a few different tones. It's by no means a plethora of tones, but it gets the job done for any genre really. I can't say anything negative about the hardware. The neck is smooth and fast, not at all sticky. The tuners are rock solid, shipped to me in tune and it hasn't slipped since I put new strings on it. Truss wheel is so easy to use it's insane. Cons: Mine has a couple small blemishes in the grain of the wood. I expect the use of inconsistent Indonesian hardwoods is the culprit here. Also, the 2-band EQ leaves the sound a touch thin when the bass is cut, so make sure you know what you're doing when you dial it in. Overall, a better buying option, in my opinion, than a Squier or Epiphone, and even better than the foreign made Fenders. I liken it to the Fender Dimension bass. Given the choice between this and some similarly priced job, go with this. It'll satisfy your needs.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I'm a guitarist who also plays bass. I did a lot of research and chose this bass, I wasn't in a position to try out the bass before buying, so my first experience with it was when it showed up. It wasn't set up to my liking but you almost never get a lower-end instrument that is, so I went to work on it.

INSPECTION: The first thing I noticed is that this bass is very good looking. The honey finish is much better looking in person and the rest is all clean lines and and solidly made. None of the fretwire is uneven, sharp, or burred. This bass is a dream to work on. Adjusting the truss rod is so easy. The guitar took to a good setup like a champ, All the hardware is in perfect working order; it even has good pots.

PLAYABILITY: I have absolutely no complaints about the neck or playability; it feels like a bass to me, lol. It holds its tuning like a champ. I check the tuning before I play but it is usually still in tune from the last time.

SOUND: Blows your hair back. The first sound it made out of my Ampeg was good, no adjustments, my friend and I both said "Whoa" at the same time. You can dial up a very wide range of bass sounds from the bass itself without changing anything on the amp. I got it to do a smooth, round, P-Bass sound like Motown, a burpy J-Bass sound (though a bit more barky-growly than the J, but in a good way), and if you crank everything you sound like Tool and win at life. If you crank the volume, cut the bass, boost the treble and play with a pick you sound almost like Lemmy. I found it great for everything, but playing rock bass on it made me feel like I was riding the Thunderhorse. I got it to do a lot of sounds, all of them good. Top marks, that pickup is powerful.

VERDICT: One of the best buys of my music career. it costs $300 and plays like $1,500. I wasn't a fan of the factory setup, but that is easily corrected by any tech and once the bass was happy it played like a dream. Good for anything, best for ROCK.
