Overview

AX3 borrows the classic single cutaway body style of Music Man's Axis guitars. An original, classic design that is familiar to all fans of great guitars. The S.U.B. Series version uses a solid hardwood body topped with a bound quilt maple image top. The neck and body are mated with the same 5 bolt neck joint found on the Silo3. Sculpted and contoured for a super comfortable joint that allows easy access to the upper register.

The Asymmetrical neck carve on AX3 is sublime and has enough girth for grip and thin enough for easy playability. The 25.5″ scale maple neck & fingerboard has 22 medium sized frets and is super easy to play. The neck is seamlessly integrated to the body.

2 high output "Zebra" coil humbucking pickups are direct mounted to the body. The special wiring of these pickups offer 5 distinct, versatile tones via the 5 way selector switch. Different combinations yield chicken pickin single coil tones to throaty, huge humbucking rock tones. Single volume and tone controls. It's all there in one guitar.

Vintage style tremolo bridge has a small area to rest your palm while picking. Individual saddles offer height and intonation adjustments for dialing in the perfect set up.

Case sold separately.

SUB AX3 Sterling by Music Man is a sleeper of a guitar...

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

Absolute best value, period. You cannot beat this guitar for the money. Makes great tones, from quacky strat sounds to thick sustaining humbucking leads and riffs. Can sparkle clean or distort pretty good too. Neck is very comfortable to play, the asymetric carving is noticeable and it seems to work well. The fit and finish is suprisingly good, the tuning seems to keep stable, the tuners themselves are decent and tight. The body is light (which i am not used too, but this is neither a negative or a positive)and the printed maple quilting looks better in person. From 10 feet away who is gonna care. Pickup selection options are great, humbucking / single coil choices aplenty. Satin finish on neck is well done too. The tremelo seems to be of good design as tuning has not been an issue so far. A sweet taste of the Ernie Ball Music Man company and Eddie Van Halen's design genius for very little money. I always believed that no guitar company could produce a low priced and as high quality guitar, particularly in the neck area, as Ibanez... Now I am adding Sterling by Music Man to the list with the AX3. Beginners, save your pennies and you wont be disappointed. Players already giging and in a band, as a backup this guitar might just save the night if something goes awry. This guitar is about the best of both worlds between strats and les pauls. It does chording nicely and fast runs and licks with ease. An easy playing guitar. Worth the price. Bought as a backup, but i cannot put it down !!! :) Was looking for a stratocaster but the price has gone up for a standard, was a little skeptical for the Squier standard stratocaster, so the AX3 Sterling cought my attention, in a major way. After playing the AX3 I am not looking back for one moment. A winner in my book...

sub series ax3 trans blue

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

Just picked this up. The pickups are pretty good. thick ans full sounding. Not muddy. The 5 way switch really gives you many different tones. The trem is awesome. I can divebomb and stay in tune pretty well. Actully tunning is great though. I abused the bar and it stayed in tune, only fell out of tune when I flatened the bar to the body. The neck is smooth. The body is light and I found no flaws with thr paint. You can tell its a photo image, but it still looks good. I would not compare to the auctual axis super sport, but compared to squire or other overpriced guitars this wins. Much better than the olp too. I did have to make some adjustments, lower the action raise pickups and change strings. no big deal. for the price this is a great deal.

A fantastc all around guitar...

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

Excellent fit and finish. Multitude of tones are available with the 5 way switching on the pickups. Single coil and humbucker sounds. Great guitar for clean stratish like sounds and humbucking metal. Neck is super, especially for an inexpensive guitar, it is fast for runs and meaty enough for chording. The hardware is good, tuning heads and tremolo stay in tune. This is a light guitar and wont kill your back. it has since become my workhorse all rounder and I am very pleased. Great guitar for a beginner or experienced player. Worth the purchase. I play The Cars, Megadeth, Whitesnake, Tom Petty, The Ventures / Surf Music, Neil Young... etc... This guitar is doing it all, it is a rocking axe :)

Solid Workhoarse!!!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

This guitar is not by any means a cheaply made guitar. In fact it's quite the opposite. Imagine yourself with an extremely versatile guitar on stage. One that plays like a pro level guitar and can conjure up a multitude of sounds delivering high quality performance for a fraction of the cost. This is it! The features are superb for an introductory level Music Man. The bridge is immaculate and fun to use. The tuning keys keep it in precise tuning while the back of the neck is satin smooth. The pickups range between single coils and humbuckers to deliver a multiple range of sounds. Overall this guitar simply "ROCKS". The only issue I have with mine is that the fret edges need to be sanded on the neck and I wish that the contour of the lower body was designed to fit your forearm more comfortably while standing. Other than that this guitar is a keeper!!!

Great value - questionable build quality

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

I originally ordered this guitar in trans black as part of the memorial day sale. Paid $211 for guitar delivered. First guitar I got the neck was not tightened, and action was approximately 1/2 inch off neck at 12th fret. I tightened 3 of 5 screws on the bolt on plate, but 4th and 5th were stripped. It still felt very loose and I opted to return for replacement. GC was sold out of black when I spoke with them, but they did arrange a red one as a replacement. Amazingly the red one arrived with almost the same neck issues - but this time none of the screws felt stripped and I was able to tighten things up to less than 1/8th inch at 12th fret. I also straightened the neck up with perhaps 1/3 of a full turn on the truss rod. Neck feels very much like a medium/large tele neck. One other minor build quality issue - the volume knob seems minorly bent and rubs a bit on one side. IF NOT for what I have mentioned, I would give this guitar a 5 star review. Once those issues were addressed, it plays great and is almost perfectly intoned. As other reviewers mention, the pickups seem to sound better to me in single coil split mode, humbuckers seem clean but weaker than expected. The neck comes "satin" and I actually sanded mine further to reduce it a bit. I like an unfinished oiled wood neck, but if you don't like this - please consider it before purchasing. Finish on everything is good. I'm impressed with the tuners. I really like the body shape as well - perfectly between a Tele and a Les Paul. Tone is also somewhere between the two. I see this as a great $250 guitar. Would work well as a beginner or intermediate instrument. My opinion (aside from the weird neck issues) is that this is a MIM Tele level guitar for 1/2 the price. I will use it as a platform to install aftermarket pickups and would then consider it gig-worthy.

Good stuff for the money....

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SUB AX3 Axis Electric Guitar:

I bought my doughter a OLP MusicMan (same guitar, old sticker) about 6 years ago. She played it for a couple of weeks than sat in my basement for 5 years. I decided to take it out, clean it up and perhaps sell it. Re-stringed it and actually played it... Oh yea, this little baby rips. Well, little red is my main baby now. I told my doughter that I repo'ed it and it's mine now. Today I played a EB MM (big bucks), but could't really tell any differance. I bend the hell out of the strings and whammy it alot but and it stays in tune. WELL worth the price. The sound is great and it just feels right.
