Overview

The Sterling SB14 has a basswood body that delivers warm tone with great sustain. Like the Music Man model, the smaller body is comfortable and easy to hold during long gigs. It features a Music Man-designed active preamp that is dead quiet and allows precise cut/boost control of bass, mid, and treble frequencies. The Music Man-designed bridge has thick saddles for stability and precise slotting that guarantees no sideways string movement during heavy playing.

SB Series bass pickups utilize a 3rd hidden coil for hum cancellation. You can also switch from single-coil or humbucking mode and get all the tonal goodness without the hum and noise.

Sterling by Music Man, is for players seeking Music Man vibe and performance at a more affordable price. The SB14 is an accurate version of the popular Music Man model and made without compromise in craftsmanship and materials. Each instrument is inspected, setup, and actually played before it is released.

Ok, I just picked up this bass today from the local Guitar Center, please understand I had my sights set on a differnt bass when I walked in the door (Ibanez SR500). I was looking for a 4 string bass with active electronics that was lightweight and comfortable to play, my main 5 string is the Ibanez SR505 and I love it so I was pretty set on getting the 4 string version. Being open minded I checked out all the basses that where in the price range I wanted (under $600). I picked up the Sterling and right away was impressed with the fit and finish of this bass, very nice construction, the fret work was perfect, and the candy apple finish was flawless. Upon plugging it in I was blown away by the sounds that this bass is capable of. A wonderful deep tone that is still very defined and tight with a great punch to the high end that is not tiny at all. The three band eq and pickup selector switch made it easy to dial in the exact sound I wanted. I spent about 30 minutes playing this bass before purchasing it. It got a good workout at rehearsal 1 hour later and the rest of the band was equally impressed. I don't think my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz will be getting as much stage time now. I really can't imagine a better bass for the money.

this bass has great action and active electronics. The only ongoing problem since I bought this at Guitar Center is the input jack. It has been looked at and supposedly repaired twice but it keeps shorting out. I have used this bass and been playing out with it for six months but you better have a back up ready to go. The store has offered to work on it for free but a 60mile round trip makes it difficult and how many times does it take to get it right. If you can afford the higher end Music man bass buy it or look and compare to similar price range for more reliable gear. At least I have a year to pay for it with zero interest. Be ready to replace the jack with a higher quality component. I think it is junk and overpriced.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SB14 Bass:

It has been a while since I originally posted about the SB14 bass. I wound up selling my previous SB14 bass a good while back. I found a great price on a near new SB14, and bought it. This has been about 4 months ago. My SB14 this time around, is the best bass I have ever owned since I started playing bass back in 1971. I had it setup by a great technician with a new set of strings, and love the sound along with the ease of playing. I am not sure this is the case with all SB14 basses out there, but the one I own is just about as good as it gets for a mid-level bass. Buy this bass, and get it setup by a pro who knows what he is doing. Do this, and you will have a bass that is fun to play.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SB14 Bass:

First of all,I owned a Music Man sterling about 10 years ago and I can tell you that other than the design of the nut, there is absolutely no difference between the sterling and the sb14. The sb14 is small, easy to hold and very fun to play, just like the sterling.
I play bass for my church and I normally use an Ibanez 6 string. Now i'm switching back to a 4. If anyone ever tells you that you NEED a B string for gospel, then they have no clue what they're talking about. You can absolutely get it done on a 4 string, and the sb14 is just the bass for it. It has good, deep tone and can cut through any mix very well. Get this bass quick before it's too late!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SB14 Bass:

After using this bass for three years, now I can tell it is a really good quality instrument with very good tone. It covers virtually any kind of music because its great active electronics. The neck is slim and fast. The body is small and slightly weighty with perfect finishing and an impressive sound sustain. The hardware is solid. I did have to adjust two frets to get rid of some buzz, but if you intend buying a bass in this price range, I definitively recommend you trying it out.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SB14 Bass:

Picked up one of these, and immediately fell in love. I am a big fan of old MM sound but never quite got the jones for the OLP or SUB line. This 3rd attempt at an import to match sound and quality of the US models is the best by far. AFter a good set up and the right strings, these SB14's are spectacular. COme right out of the mix on a live gig, easy to hold for hours due to the smaller body, and the necks feel great..very similar to a jazz neck, slim, fast, and with good fretwork. paint jobs are surprisingly beautiful too, and Ilove the preamp. Spending your money on these is definetely spent well. Set up is key, because the sound in thereand is really outstanding, just made better by the right strings and an excellent setup. Get one.

          SB14 Sterling by Musicman

          By Gavin Rothschild

          from Ontario, CA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SB14 Bass:

You have to try and hear this bass for yourself. Don't let it's made in Indonesia or basswood body fool you. This is a very good quality instrument with very good tone. I played this and the MM Stingray classic back and forth trying to sense and hear the differences. With the pickup selection on the SB14 I was able to achieve pretty much the same sound as the Stingray. The Neck is easier to play, the body feels weighty and has smooth tone. The hardware feels solid. If I lost this Bass, I'd definitely repurchase one. Over the Ray34 and a MM Sterling. The cost savings is too good to pass up and you get a real quality instrument!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man SB14 Bass:

Was shopping for a mexican Fender Precision but once I started playing this bass I knew it was for me! Waited a couple of weeks while I hit every music store within and hour drive of either direction of me and still could not find another bass in the same price range that had the low metal growls and crisp quality for lighter stuff. From Metallica to the Beatles this bass covers it all. Neck is slim and fast and great sound when slappin'. I did have to play with the truss rods adjustments to get some buzz out but thats because the yahoos at the store didnt set it up! Great buy! Been playing it for four months now while my Dean Edge and Oscar Schmidt collect dust!
