A different opinion

By Nick Metz

from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I own two Music Man Stingrays (a four and a five) and I have recently played a few Sterlings. Music Man basses have incredible quality no matter if its a Stingray or a Sterling it will still be top of the line. Obviously the Stingrays are much better and if you were investing in a bass guitar to play over they years I would recommend a real Stingray. However this particular bass is a great bass for beginner to intermediate bassist looking for something new to practice or start gigging with. A solid 5 out of 5.

Have a Budget? want a bass you'll love for years? this is it.

By Matt Maley

from Boston Mass

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

As a young 18 year old player it is tough to find a good instrument you want to play with for many years to come with a limited budget, and still be able to pay this price. I searched far and wide and honestly this is the best on the market. I bought this christmas 2010 with gift cards and my own money and it is beautiful. I compared it to music man ray which this rich kid at my school bought right after I did and honestly other than some minor things they are exactly the same. Honestly if you removed the markings and told me it was the music man I wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless I compared them side by side. For anyone who has a budge but still wants a bass they will love for years this is the bass for you. And you can play literally any kind of music you want on it with all the options, turn the treble and bass up for some nasty slappin', turn the treble down and the bass and mid way up and its a P-bass, and everything in between.

Great Bass!

By TOM KELLY

from Madison, WI

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I love everything about this bass. After a few minor adjustments, it plays and sounds great! The pickup placement is perfect for thumb placement and maximizes tone. The MM4 headstock is beautiful.

Best for the Money !

By Chuck Rackley

from Hueytown Alabama

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I recently had the chance to sit in with a friends band and he handed me his E B bass to play and I fell in love with it . I decided to go to G C and get one but when I got there I spotted this bass in the silver burst finish . I sat there with an E B and this Sterling for an hour going back and forth and could not find any real difference between the two . Asked my wife which she liked and she said the sterling was prettier ( which is true ) , bought it and couldn't be happier great product at less than half the price ! You won't be disappointed in this period . By the way I am a regular gigging musician who plays every week and this is my new bass of choice .

Make other bass players jealous

By Domo

from Santa Clarita CA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I am a Fender guy. I want to say that right off the bat. To me the Fender Jazz Bass and Rickenbacker 4003 were the greatest basses ever made, period. THEN I went to Guitar Center and played this bass. Needless to say, I rethought my opinion. The neck is perfect, no dead spots. It's the Fender "BaseBall Bat" neck, and it's not that super thin Ibanez "made for incredibly small hands" necks. I prefer a maple fingerboard, but this bass felt so incredible I got the rosewood instead and I would NEVER change the neck. I am normally a rock and roll bass player, but I wound up playing in a country band as a favor to a friend. Needless to say, the dynamics of this bass are so amazing you can literally play any kind of music. The bass player in my old band (who forced me to play guitar) always wanted a Music Man... Now I have a Sterling, which looks and sunds just like the MM and is less than half the price. TOTALLY worth it, and now he's incredibly jealous.

Great Intermediate Bass

By JJ

from Yorba Linda, CA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

The Sterling Ray 34 is a sweet piece! Great tonal variation and active electronics. Midpoints on the tone knobs is a nice touch as well. The neck is by no means chunky and it feels like a dream. It is a very reliable bass that is road-ready! The color of the honeyburst model is impressive to say the least. Plays and sounds like a high-end Musicman and sounds great with slap playing. If you are looking for an excellent bass for under this price, then this is definitely a bass to test drive and consider purchasing.

Better than the big guys

By Mark

from beaverton, OR

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I played this badboy today at GC, and afterwards tried the $1,900 stingrays, and this little guy plays better with a much better feel, SOUNDS better, and even has the mid-points on the dials unlike the full price ones! Don't let the "made in Indonesia" fool you - this little baby is sweet - I picked one up today and was glad I did.

Superb, simply superb

By In search of tone

from St. Louis, Mo

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

Okay, first let's compare the Musicman Stingray to the Sterling Ray34. Wood: The same species are used in both instruments. However, the EB Musicman uses choicer grain and ages the wood longer. This has zero effect on tone, but adds to the asthetics. Therefore, the wood of the Ray 34 will darken and gain an aged look over the years. Electronics: The Ray 34 uses electronics that, though made overseas, are identical in specs and materials as the EB Musicman. Over all sound and feel: I have been playing and been a studying musician for over twenty years. I don't mean to brag, but I have near perfect pitch ear. I COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO INSTRUMENTS! Cost: The Ray 34 is less than 1/2 the cost of the Stingray. What a deal. I suppose this is due to the drastic difference between American labor wages and Indonesian. As well, the rarity of the grain selection in the EB Musicman Stingray is a huge factor. Pricing slabs, you will see that the difference in price between a good slab of maple and aged birds eye or burl maple is more than 150%. Accompanying Equipment: The Ray 34 comes with a gig bag, but the molded EB Musicman case may be added for an additional $100. Also, if you choose to get a case and forgoe the gigbag, the listed price drops by $20. All in all, there is no better bass on the market in this "sub-1000 dollar" price range. One more thing, if you are stuck between the tonal differences in maple or rosewood fretboards, don't be. I got the honey burst with rosewood as I like the feel of rosewood, but love the sound of maple. The onboard EQ allows me to dial in exactly the maple sound. Hope this helps, enjoy.

Great Bass at a Great Price!

By Topher P

from Hamburg, PA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

Recently I was asked to play bass in a band - I am not a bass player, I'm a guitar player, but I thought it would be fun. I borrowed a Music Man Stingray from a buddy of mine to get my feet wet and fell in love with it! Unfortunately if I spent $1500 on a bass my wife would not be pleased, but he recommended I check out the Sterling and I am glad I did! I have the black one: finish and craftsmanship are nearly flawless! As far as playability, it plays and sounds pretty near the MMSR4. Right out of the box is was pretty solid although I had the action lowered and set up a half-step down as well as installed a BT7 HipShot Bass Extender and now it plays like butter! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a bass in the price range - it's top notch and you won't be disappointed!
