Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I have been playing bass on and off for over 35 years...played lots of different high and low quality basses over the years. There are a lot of great basses that cost twice the price....all I can say is before you buy one of these ...try a "Ray 34".........you may save a lot of money......and be very happy. Mine is sunburst...great finish plays and sounds awesome lots of growl and punch for funk...play with the knobs and get tones for any style of music...very good bass... hope they make a dual pickup version............

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

Beautiful bass. Maple neck with figure maple (?) fingerboard. The Pacific Blue Burst Maple finish is very nice, but not as defined as shown on the photo on the Musicians Friend website. The gradation between the black and blue is more subtle.
The set-up and intonation were very good right out of the box. I didn't have to tweak anything, which is a first. The action is very good. I love the tone and the tone controls are great, except that the bass control is where the treble control should be, and vice-versa. Same as my 5-string MusicMan bass. I guess it's a MusicMan tradition. Looks to me like this bass is a kind of "re-issue" of the 1970's vintage MusicMan bass.
The only thing I don't like about this bass, and it's significant, is it is VERY HEAVY (10.5 pounds). I'm 68 years old and in good shape (for 68) but this bass wears me out if I stand to play it for an hour. May have been a different experience for me at 28, but not now. My Ibanez SR650 weighs 8.0 pounds and is much more comfortable to play than the Ray34, BUT, the Ray34 sounds great, plays great, and is beautiful. I love it despite it being overweight.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

Though my wood grain Sterling was sitting in the window of a used guitar store,
I bought mine new with new Music Man case. I was shocked to later find out
what it listed for new on here, because though it is the only Music Man I own, I played the
more expensive MM Sting Ray & Sterlings, and my 4 string Sterling Ray plays just as good, and sounds
just as good. Plays smooth like butter, has more punch than Mike Tyson used too. I let several
bass playing friends of mine play it, and more than one told me they are jealous.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

Great bass I purchased this bass so I did not have to use my 82 Stingray as much. My band didnt even know I changed basses because I purchased the Natural just like my original Stingray, so the sound is very close and I would say the main difference is because the Ray 34 has the three band EQ For the price you get the sound and almost as great quality so for those who say it isnt as good maybe they are just upset they paid three times the price for the same sounding bass.

Great Guitar in every respect! I spent a little time setting it up to my playing style and it is a joy to play. I will be playing this guitar for a long time with no regrets whatsoever. I have been playing for 35 years and I plan on this being my main bass...You want be disappointed...If you want a great Bass Guitar at a very good price try the Sterling Ray 34.

                A different opinion

                By Nick Metz

                from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man Ray34 Electric Bass Guitar:

I own two Music Man Stingrays (a four and a five) and I have recently played a few Sterlings. Music Man basses have incredible quality no matter if its a Stingray or a Sterling it will still be top of the line. Obviously the Stingrays are much better and if you were investing in a bass guitar to play over they years I would recommend a real Stingray. However this particular bass is a great bass for beginner to intermediate bassist looking for something new to practice or start gigging with. A solid 5 out of 5.

I have played many basses throughout my 18yrs of playing and this by far is the best I have played for the price it is. The craftmanship is there in the details, like the high gloss headstock finish stops at the nut. There was thought in the design of this instrument not just made to make them cheaper. I applaud Ernie Ball and MusicMan for making this affordable line of "Quality" instruments.
