The S.U.B. Series family of instruments introduce a new level of quality, features and value for the beginning or intermediate player. Part of the esteemed Music Man & Sterling by Music Man family of instruments, Music Man feels all players should have access to affordable guitars & basses that feel, sound and play like a refined, crafted professional instrument.

The best components, hardware and designs all work in harmony to give you the best user experience as you discover your sound. Their goal is to deliver an instrument, at a price that surpasses your expectations.

The Ray4 and Ray5 basses are the cousins of the Music Man StingRay 4 and 5 basses. Classic, iconic instruments that defined a generation of bassists since the late 70²s. Active electronics, low noise hum bucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected.

They start with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A narrow 38mm nut width (Ray4) and 45mm nut width (Ray5) was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

S.U.B. Series Bass Boast Great Tone Shaping Features
The tone is shaped by the onboard active 2 band preamp. Controls for volume, bass and treble offer maximum flexibility in finding your sound. Full cut & boost of bass & treble frequencies. The wide range of tones, guarantee you will find your sound, for any musical situation.

Quality Construction
Sterling wants your bass to last a lifetime. Superior design and construction are key to delivering a solid instrument that will accompany you on your long musical journey. All S.U.B. basses employ a superior 6 bolt neck joint. The 6 bolt neck joint, designed by Music Man, offers strength, stability and great tone transfer. The neck stays in position and won't shift under heavy load. The neck heel allows easy access to the higher end of the fingerboard and is unobtrusive. Allowing your hands to freely move about the neck with ease. Rest assured, your neck will stay put while your fingers roam about.

High Output Humbucking Pickup
The high output humbucking pickup was designed for clarity and true reproduction of the basses natural tone, with minimal coloration. 2 rows of large magnetic pole pieces pump the strings information into the pickup, feeding the 2 band active preamp. Tones can be aggressive, wild or mild. Its up to you to find your sound. 3 screw adjustment allow for more accurate positioning of the pickups angle & height, allowing for more precise adjustments to match the strings angle.

Satin Finished Neck
The feel of the neck is everything. Your fretting hand is touching the neck 100% of the time you play your bass. They developed a super smooth satin finish for the back of the neck. This finish is non glossy, never get's sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel.

Neck Adjustments
All stringed instruments need some basic adjustments from time to time. Neck adjustments can be intimidating for some. S.U.B. makes it easy and simple. S.U.B. Series guitars & basses have an easy to adjust neck. No specialized tools are needed. The small thumbwheel located at the end of the fingerboard makes it easy and simple. You can use a small screwdriver or the included chrome bar to easily and quickly adjust the neck to your preference. No need to remove the neck or strings, you can make the adjustments on the fly. Easy, quick, convenient. More time to play, less time for adjustments.

Top Mounted Output Jack
No more fumbling trying plug in the cable. The output jack is conveniently placed on top of the body. Located on the control plate, the jack is secure and won't easily pull out or get damaged when placed in a guitar stand. Sterling uses a heavy duty jack that is designed to withstand plenty of use and abuse.

The 2 band active preamp is powered by a 9 volt battery. The easy to open battery compartment makes battery changes easy and simple. Simply flip up the battery door, unclip the 9 volt from the clip and clip in your new battery. Takes no time at all. The battery is easily accessible on the back of the body. Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

As a beginner/hobbyist, I was looking for a bass to just add simple bass lines to home recordings, and nothing more. So far, I'm pretty happy with this bass.

It feels and looks great so far. Love the blue satin finish. It plays well. The strings are somewhat close together (compared to other basses I've tried), but with some time I know I'll get used to it. Frets feel good, with no sharp edges. The neck does have a finish flaw - there is a thin 4-5 inch line of roughness
on the neck near the head-stock. Not a deal killer, but wish it was smooth like the rest of the neck.

The pickup is pretty hot. I've read that others have said the same...and it's true. It doesn't take much volume to get this thing growling. I've been able to tame it with the tone controls for the most part.

A couple other things to note:

1.The low B string is pretty loud/pronounced vs. the others strings.
    2. There is some fret buzz at the 12th fret on the high G string.

Hopefully a setup and some new strings might fix those quirks (it supposedly has been "inspected and setup" at the CA factory, but who knows how long ago that happened, and what that entailed/how thorough).

Overall, I'm happy with the SUB Ray5.

I would recommended this to everyone !!!

Its really nice weighty bass! Feels great in the hands and on the sholders! The matte finish is stupendous! I think the only thing that I dont like about this bass is that it only has 21 frets but I can live that completely!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Amazing sound and feel for the money. I guess if you're looking for more versatility in tone, step up to the Ray35, but for my needs, this bass covered all the bases.

        Has improvements.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I had one of these in black a little over a year ago. I sold it a while ago. I recently noticed new finishes on these and tried one out. There are a couple of improvements that Sterling By Musicman hasn't mentioned. One, heavier wood so you don't have the neck dive that my previous one had and demos that I tried in the store. You also get a stronger tone. Two, the sharp fret edges are gone. The extremely hot preamp has not been fixed. From what I've read it's that the preamp is wired right after the pickup instead of wired just before the output jack but I just screw the pickup down all the way so it won't overpower my Fender Mexican Jazz Deluxe V. This bass is a great player considering the price. The honey burst satin finish is very nice.

Great bass and a bargain price!

        By David Desmond

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have been playing bass for 49 years and play lots of gigs at bars, outdoor venues as well as going to blues and rock jams at local bars in Florida and Connecticut. My main bass is an expensive MusicMan StingRay 5 HH and it was getting trashed at these events. I went to the Fort Myers, FL GC store and tried the Sub 5 and it has most of the tone and features of my Ray. It is much lighter, the strings are closer together, it does not have the phantom coil so you can get some very slight hum but nothing like a Fender Jazz hums. The pickup is very powerful and the tone is fantastic for Rock, slapping and even playing power ballads. The intonation was set perfectly as well as string height and the only thing I did is a fine touch up of a couple of sharp fret ends-but I did that to my USA made StingRay 5 as well. I played Fender basses-mostly Precisions, for over 30 years then I switched to the StingRay and later to 5 strings. I always like to point out to Fender bass players who do not play StingRays that Leo Fender designed the StingRay and made them after he came up with a better design to improve the bass. This is a decent copy of a StingRay and can sound and play like a StingRay but is not the real thing. Darn close and a great bargain at the price and a very well made and great sounding bass.
