Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This bass has become one of my main basses. At one point, I've owned more than ten basses. This one always was one of the most played, and most gigged. I tend to play more and more music that strongly suggests 5-string as time goes on, and so I tend to play this bass more and more as time goes on. To me, this bass sounds BETTER than an EBMM American-made model. Why? There is a filter that I understand is unique to this Ray35 model ONLY (the exact Filter specs and details are very hard if impossible to find) in the middle position of the three-position selector. This is "Coils 1+2 (series) with Filter." The bottom line is it sounds very "Fendery", relatively speaking, compared to the two other pickup selections. So a variety of sounds, and the tone-shaping possibilities with the active 3-band EQ of not only frequency cut, but also frequency boost allows me to emulate a wide variety of sounds using the tone knobs, and various techniques, such as nasally finger style Jazz Bass funk, wooly upright thump, and most points in-between. A tremendously versatile bass that I can play with appropriate tone in so many styles, and I have to, because I am a long term member of a diverse corporate and political event band. I've been and continue to be "a Fender bass guy", but the build quality, tone, sonic flexibility, etc... continues to make this a go-to instrument. In fact, I'm thinking about purchasing a second one, and making it an unlined fretless. Lastly, an EBMM *might* be a better bass, but I disagree, as that EBMM certainly doesn't sound better, and it is impossible to quantify it as $1000 more (which is the extra $$$ you'll pay for new EBMM) kind of better. I have played, and seriously demoed the whole range of Fender and Stingray-type basses, and countless others, and this Ray35 is IMO, the best bang-for-buck bass I've ever come across in 20+ years of playing, demoing, and buying basses. It's why I own one- and am seriously considering another.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

have had the ray 35 for a number of months now and it is a beautiful, well made and great sounding bass......... it was a good choice........... however, I see Yamaha has a five string at exactly half the price (Yamaha TRBX305) and I was wondering if anyone out there owns one or has even played one. It has double , oversized humbuckers (a pair of custom-designed M3 humbucking pickups. These bad boys sport ceramic magnets and oversized polepieces for big tone with great depth and definition without any hum)compared to the Ray's single humbuckers.... and a mahogany body vrs ash , so not sure which is heavier.......... and don't get me wrong, i love the sterling (and guitar center has been great)................ just curious............

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Buy this now!!! I have played man stingrays in the past and retired my last one. I picked this up for recording in my studio and it sounds dead on with a standard musicman. The lower sub series feel cheaper but this feels like an ernie ball for sure. I played a family reserve and this side by side and recorded the same track side by side and u cant tell them apart. The build quality like the nut and neck finish is not family reserve quality but that is to be expected for 1200$ cheaper :) this easily replace my 90s sting and i think actually plays better! Dont fret and buy this now while you can!

A great bass in the "middle of the road" price range

      By Mike Campbell

      from Toledo, OH

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

No matter what level you are in your playing, this is a great 5 string bass that captures the sound and feel of its big brother. The bass is made in Indonesia with great quality parts and is shipped to the United States where it receives an final inspection and set up. This bass does come stock with Ernie Ball Slinkys. The Ray35 features the same preamp, selector switch, and pickup as the newer made EBMM SR5's. You can tell a distinct difference in the different pickup modes. This bass fits perfect for finger style, pick style and slapping. The Ray35's overall tone is slightly scooped and very growly and aggressive. The bass balances quite well without any neck dives. With a 17.5 mm string spacing, the strings are close enough together that enables the player to move quickly, but isn't like playing a tree trunk. There is plenty of room to move. The neck feels really great in your hands. The neck and truss rod works very well and is stable. With the six bolt neck, it sits in the neck pocket and does not move or shift. The gig bag that is shipped with this bass is amazing. It is nice and thick. It provides plenty of protection, and the player can have piece of mind knowing that it is safe and well protected. The case features a very roomy front pocket with the brand name and logo proudly displayed. This gig bag features a single shoulder strap that allows the player to decide which shoulder they prefer. To some it up, this bass is a perfect 5 string bass for the beginning player and the seasoned pro. It is a affordable way to achieve the Stingray 5 sound and a fraction of the price. Ernie Ball/ Music-man should be proud of this new addition to the Music-man family. Try this bass today. It will not let you down!

SR5 features and sound without the high price!!

      By Aaron Fowler

      from Wildomar, CA

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I had been wanting a Stingray 5 for some time, but just couldn't bring myself to pay that much. I discovered the Sterling by Musicman and decided to give the Ray35 a shot. I can honestly say that I was blown away. It looks, feels, and sounds like the EBMM Stingray 5. The neck feels great. It is a bit on the heavy side (I like that though)but feels balanced. Absolutely no neck-dive. The best part of this bass is that it nails that Stingray sound. I have two other basses and they cannot match how this bass fits in the mix.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

for a starter 5 string i was absolutely amazed. i didn't know what i was getting into, but this bass opened my eyes to the opportunities of what can be created with a little lower end. it's absolutely perfect. all the trimmings are smooth and subtle. the neck is thin, but it doesn't feel flimsy, the pickup is amazing. it sounds just.. perfect. BUY THIS BASS!!!

      Awesome bass for great price

      By RabidBassMan

      from Freeport, IL

Comments about Sterling by Music Man RAY35 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I am very impressed with this bass. I have always loved the Music Man Sting Ray basses. They have the best sound and most power that I have ever heard. The problem was always the price. Now they make the Sterling. This is an awesome bass comparable to it's more expensive brother. I love having the preamp equalizer's, it makes changing the sound and feel easier. But the best part is when I plug it in to my amp and turn it to full volume, it rattles the whole building.
