Overview

AX4 borrows the classic single cutaway body style of Music Mans Axis guitars. An original, classic design that is familiar to all fans of great guitars. The S.U.B. Series version uses a solid hardwood body topped with a bound quilt maple image top.

The neck and body are mated with the same 5-bolt neck joint found on the Silo3. Sculpted and contoured for a super comfortable joint that allows easy access to the upper register. Asymmetrical neck carve on AX4 is sublime and has enough girth for grip and is thin enough for easy playability.

The 25.5? scale maple neck and fingerboard has 22 medium-sized frets and is super easy to play. The neck is seamlessly integrated to the body. Two high-output "Zebra" coil humbucking pickups are direct mounted to the body.

The special wiring of these pickups offer five distinct, versatile tones via the five-way selector switch. Different combinations yield chicken pickin' single-coil tones to throaty, huge humbucking rock tones. Single volume and tone controls. Its all there in one guitar.

Heads up if you're buying this guitar. I was told by three separate people who work for GC in their local stores and in their corporate center, that this guitar is NOT in stock in their Kansas City warehouse. They have no new stock of this item. All stock is being pulled from store stock of the GC closest to you in your state. If your local GC doesn't have it then it comes from another GC located in another state. I found this out when I ordered one online and what showed up was the same scratched up one I saw at my local GC a few days earlier and passed on. The packing slip confirmed it came from my local GC.

Long story short, I returned two of these and finally settled on the third one they got for me from another state. If you want one call the 855 number and ask the rep which stores have multiples of the color you want. If a store has two or three of the same color there's a decent chance that one of them is new in a box and sitting in their stock room. Call that store directly and talk to a manager and ask him if he can ship you one that's new in the box. If a store only has one of the color you want, the chances are very good that it's a demo model, I would avoid it.

Now as for the guitar itself I am very happy with the third one I got. I purchased a EVH Wolfgang Standard in early 2015 and I had multiple issues with that guitar, I went through four of them, and they all had serious issues with fretwork, as in very sharp fret edges and a lot of high frets on each one, they all needed full fret levels. I returned each one and gave up on that model. Maybe it was an issue with that particular run, I don't know. The Sterling by Music Man AX4 Sub Series has better fretwork than any of the EVH Wolfgang Standards I had or tried, it's not even close. The pickups in the AX4 sound great, the trem works well, the neck is very comfortable, and I like the five way pickup selector and it's placement on the body. I bought this while it was on sale and it's solid guitar.

Bought this guitar as upcoming Christmas gift for my daughter. Guitar seems fine, problem is it's not new as expected from warehouse. This was NOT purchased as Used Gear, yet someone at Guitar Center #421 decided I should be shipped a floor model that had finger prints and pick scratches all over the lower half below the pickups. Yet no one reached out to let me know that I was getting a used guitar or that this was the last one or anything. Fyi, I have no problems with used gear, just purchased a Gretsch G2655T Streamliner double-cutaway from Open Box gear on musiciansfriend site. But I do have a problem with bait&switch sales/inventory handling Guitar Center- so make this right and I'll update this review, otherwise this is only the beginning..

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX4 Sub Series Flame Grain Image Electric Guitar:

Great Guitar, to good to be true I was thinking since I know the Axis is around 2 thousand bucks and the EVH Wolfgang and other Sterling ax guitars are much more expensive than the sub series. I did some research. The guitar is made in Indonesia, and the flame maple top is a photo top. This guitar greatly exceeded all my expectations considering the price. The Maple neck feels great, plays great. The photo top looks great. The pickups are good to very good in quality and sound surprisingly good. Stays in tune amazingly well dive bomb after dive bomb. The Floyd Rose is the same that's used on the more expensive Sterling Ax ax guitars and its a good one. a pleasant surprise is the added feature of a strat type 5 way pick up selector switch!! very versatile. I have owned USA and korean wolfgang guitars and presently own a Gibson SG. The Streling rates right up there with them. Only thing it could use is a set up but plays decent out of the box. Just about all guitars bought and shipped will require a set up so its not a negative, just a little fret buzz. If you have ever been a fan of the MM Axis, EVH Wolfgang or Sterling Ax series guitars you will love the Sterling Sub.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX4 Sub Series Flame Grain Image Electric Guitar:

I loved the look and feel of this guitar, so I got it as an additional axe to have fun practicing on. After a good set up (it definitely needed that to get fully dialed in...), it now plays awesome (it's now a really fast guitar with great action!) and I've been playing it exclusively (and I own a good American strat!). The pick ups are amazingly hot for stock pickups and produce terrific crunch, harmonics, and dive bombs if you're into metal like me. Very decent tone to them too. It stays in tune great, all the parts are decent quality, and the floyd is terrific (read: not cheapo) for such an inexpensive guitar. I've owned several mid-range guitars, and this one is better than any of them. Plus, it's beautiful and really just makes you want to play all the time. For the price, you can't beat this guitar!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX4 Sub Series Flame Grain Image Electric Guitar:

I believe an electric guitar should sound good before it is ever plugged into an amp . This guitar, and others I have played just like it have that character . The pickups are way better than most I have ever played in this price range , and the neck is really comfortable and the frets have been finished well ..

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX4 Sub Series Flame Grain Image Electric Guitar:

I went to Guitar Center in Roseville, CA to buy one of these. They had two red ones and a blue one in stock. The output jacks on both red ones had come loose and fallen into the body so they couldn't be plugged in. Thankfully I was interested in the blue one anyway. I pick up the blue one to play and noticed the tremolo springs were so over tightened that the tremolo was digging into the graphic top of the body. All three guitars were completely unplayable.

I understand not every guitar is going to be set up perfectly, but these three were in really poor shape. After this experience, I don't think I'll buy a Sterling Sub guitar.

Eddie van halen is a major influence for me.i've spent a lot of time trying to
Get all the pieces together in a guitar that plays and sounds this good..This guitar is it.This is a perfect guitar. This is based off of Eddie's music man,and it rocks!Try out the other guitars and listen to the tone..How easy are they to play? I tried 8 different guitars even ones double or triple the price. They didn't even come close to this one.
This one makes you want to play. I wish i had this as my first guitar,I would be a professional by now, instead of trying to get a good sound. This guitar will get you rockin' !

I have a number of guitars including a Rickenbacker, Strat, custom-made Nova, and a Hoshino (Ibanez). Used a gift card to purchase the Music Man AX4..so no downside. What a pleasant surprise when my guitar arrived. I bought the transparent red, and it's really beautiful. Right out of the box, it played great. The action was good and the playability was excellent. I kept waiting for the red flag item, but it hasn't appeared. I don't know if I got lucky, but I would definitely buy another of these models. The locking tremolo system is a dive only set-up, and it stays in tune. For the price point of this guitar, it's a great deal.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man AX4 Sub Series Flame Grain Image Electric Guitar:

It's fast for great chords and leads. The frets are finished with no ragged edges. I don't like jumbo frets, these are small medium for quick sliding, etc.
The pickups are good, but not as good as Seymours or Dimarzios; for this price just swap them if you have the money. The 5-way pickup switch is a great plus with each position actually producing distinctly different tones with PUs in unison or locked in individually. The more expensive Ax40 and the MM Axis don't have this feature. I have a fender EVH wolfgang special MIJ. they are not the same, but good in their own way. The EVH plays even more like butter and has a better pickup, but I have two complaints with that guitar which I do not with this. 1) The wolfgang strings are not centered on the neck as well. I have looked at others at it would seem either Eddie likes it like this or Fender's machine made this mistake on many other guitars. 2) the wolfgang doesn't have the coil tapping or 5 different tones.
