The Ray4 and Ray5 basses are the cousins of the Music Man StingRay 4 and 5 basses. Classic, iconic instruments that defined a generation of bassists since the late 70's. Active electronics, low noise hum bucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected. They start with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A narrow 38mm nut width was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

S.U.B. Series Bass Boast Great Tone Shaping Features.
The tone is shaped by the onboard active 2 band preamp. Controls for volume, bass and treble offer maximum flexibility in finding your sound. Full cut & boost of bass & treble frequencies. The wide range of tones, guarantee you will find your sound, for any musical situation.

Quality Construction
Sterling by Music Man wants your bass to last a lifetime. Superior design and construction are key to delivering a solid instrument that will accompany you on your long musical journey. All S.U.B. basses employ a superior 6 bolt neck joint. The 6 bolt neck joint, designed by Music Man, offers strength, stability and great tone transfer. The neck stays in position and won’t shift under heavy load. The neck heel allows easy access to the higher end of the fingerboard and is unobtrusive, allowing your hands to freely move about the neck with ease. Rest assured, your neck will stay put while your fingers roam about.

High Output Humbucking Pickup
The high output humbucking pickup was designed for clarity and true reproduction of the basses natural tone, with minimal coloration. 2 rows of large magnetic pole pieces pump the strings information into the pickup, feeding the 2 band active preamp. Tones can be aggressive, wild or mild. Its up to you to find your sound. 3 screw adjustment allow for more accurate positioning of the pickups angle & height, allowing for more precise adjustments to match the strings angle.

Satin Finished Neck
The feel of the neck is everything. Your fretting hand is touching the neck 100% of the time you play your bass. Sterling by Music Man developed a super smooth satin finish for the back of the neck. This finish is non glossy, never get’s sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel.

Neck Adjustments
All stringed instruments need some basic adjustments from time to time. Neck adjustments can be intimidating for some. S.U.B. makes it easy and simple. S.U.B. Series guitars & basses have an easy to adjust neck. No specialized tools are needed. The small thumbwheel located at the end of the fingerboard makes it easy and simple. You can use a small screwdriver or the included chrome bar to easily and quickly adjust the neck to your preference. No need to remove the neck or strings, you can make the adjustments on the fly. Easy, quick, convenient. More time to play, less time making adjustments.

Top Mounted Output Jack
No more fumbling trying plug in the cable. The output jack is conveniently placed on top of the body. Located on the control plate, the jack is secure and won’t easily pull out or get damaged when placed in a guitar stand. Sterling by Music Man uses a heavy duty jack that is designed to withstand plenty of use and abuse.

Battery
The 2 band active preamp is powered by a 9 volt battery. The easy to open battery compartment makes battery changes easy and simple. Simply flip up the battery door, unclip the 9 volt from the clip and clip in your new battery. Takes no time at all. The battery is easily accessible on the back of the body. • Everyone should own this bass!!

As reviewed by ANDY DUNN on 10/29/2012

This is a great bass! To start off it really sounds like a Music Man Stingray. Most basses in this price range look like their big brothers (Squier/ Fender) but they never really have that great of a sound. Second, with only a couple twists of the truss rod and and a few adjustments to the saddles it played like butter. Once again usually when you spend between $200-$300 on a bass you will have to live with the fact that its probably going to play like a 2X4. This bass has a nice low cut nut, level frets, and a really straight neck. Overall the main reason I picked it up in the first place was because I just wanted a good basic bass in my studio for my students to be able to use but after I set it up I have not been able to stop playing it myself. So if you are a beginner looking for a good bass to get going on THIS IS IT!! If you are a intermediate to advanced player this will make a great back up bass for any gig. All in all I have been a huge fan of Music Man Basses for a long time and I was absolutely blown away by the price and quality of this instrument. Like I said in the title of this review, everyone should own this bass!! Also, If you have never played or heard a Music Man they are really good for any genre of music but they work great for rock and funk (especially if you use a slap style of playing). This is because the one humbucker near the bridge gives you a really bright and boomy tone. The only thing these basses tend to lack in when it comes to tone is the mid range. But in my opinion if they had a heavier mid range they wouldn't be a Music Man. Finally if you are going to pick this bass up, buy some new strings and either set it up yourself or have a tech set it up. You will not get the full potential out of this bass if you play with the factory strings and set up.

  • Great for the price, but a lot of hype.

As reviewed by remigio holmes on 3/26/2013

Up until the S.U.B., I had never bought a bass online and to tell the truth it was a impulse buy partly because on the multiple positive threads on TB. I have never had a bass under $300 NIB so I tried to keep an open mind and just compare it with the used basses for the same price that I could recollect taking the time to look at, but I could not recollect ever taking the the time to really look at one let alone play one. My first impression when was WOW, and then I held it close and really looked at it and the bass almost felt to me that I was holding a super nice toy. I own a Stingray and two Sterlings, I think initially that's why I had that first impression of the SUB. My initial excitement just turned in to an "Oh ok", but in no way disappointment. Right of the bat the differences were apparent right away. In NO way am I comparing the SUB Ray4 to the EBMM Stingray that would be like comparing oranges and banannas. In contrast though the S.U.B. is lighter, the fret dots and the logo I am guessing are thickly silk screened on the neck and head, the frets were a little rough and snaged my fingers when I ran them over and along the edge of the fret board, and I feel the SUB could of come with a substantially better nut. Not what I expected at first, but after thoughtful consideration of what I really should expect from a under $300 NIB bass. The S.U.B. exceeded my expectations. BTW I have never owned a brand new bass, I've only ever owned used/pre loved basses, and I just picked up a 5 string Fender Deluxe for $300. That bass blows the S.U.B. Ray4 away even with the huge dings and cracks in the paint. Also I ordered two S.U.B.'s because of a photo shop I saw on one of the threads on TB, and because it was less to order two. I swaped the maple neck from a black one with the rosewood neck from a walnut one, then I up graded the pickup and the 2 band pre amp (B/T/V) to a 3 band pre amp (B/M/T/V). Now I have a Walnut Satin S.U.B. with a Maple neck with the 1/4" jack mounted in the cornner instead of on the plate. I ended up trading the left over Black S.U.B. with the Rosewood neck and the left over stock electronics to the shop for the work, parts, and a new case for my new S.U.B. so I suppose the S.U.B. Ray4 I ended up with ended up costing me a little more. BTW the pickup I used was the Basslines SMB-4A, the preamp I used was the Baselines STC-3M4, and a jack plate that the shop had laying around. I know there better pickup's and preamp's that I could of used, but I am happy and satisfied with the Basslines components so naysayers just be happy too. Total cost to me $500 and 7 days waiting on UPS plus 3 days waiting for the work to be done.

  • Great Bass! Save yourself a fortune and get one of these!

As reviewed by Gavin Olson on 2/28/2013

Yes there are fancier, more expensive basses out there but this ray4 delivers the goods with the best of them. I had been shopping around for a bass off and on for the better part of a year and stumbled upon this bass and immediatly knew this was the one. The active preamp and eq provides great tone shaping options. The wood and finish is top notch. The bass has some weight to it but vertainly wont break your back but it doesnt sacrifice quality tone for lightness. Thes smaller neck is great for smaller hands (which I have)and make it an easy bass to play. I feel its a great bass for many styles of music. I personally play punk/hardcore and post-rock stuff and this provides great bottom end for both without sounding out of place. I really couldnt be happier I got a killer bass thats fun to play at a price that didnt break the bank. My only suggestion would beto swap out the stock strings with a new set (but thats pretty much a given with any off the wall purchase)
