Comments about Sterling Audio VMS Vocal Microphone Shield:

I got this as part of a package deal with an ST-51 LDC for $99... I didn't need either one, but I like trying out cheap new microphones and figured it wouldn't hurt to have another reflection shield on hand. This thing is not a reflection shield- it is basically a reflection generator. It is a large resonant piece of metal that rings at about 6000/12000Hz- quite prominently, I might add.

Perhaps there are some situations in which this thing might reduce reflections (recording in a parking garage? inside a reverb tank?), but in most practical application this device is more likely to introduce reflections into your recording than prevent them. The foam that coats the interior is neither thick enough to absorb any reflections, nor dense enough to mask the vibration of the "shield" itself. In a word, this thing is a GIMMICK, a quick cash grab by Guitar Center. This is NOT a functional product.

Dampening the back side of this thing with loads of duct tape and filling the inside with another 4" of acoustic foam can turn this thing into a refection filter... but if that's your route, there are probably 2 dozen items at your local 99 cent store that could be similarly turned into reflection filters.

Does the job but flimsy build

Comments about Sterling Audio VMS Vocal Microphone Shield:

It does its intended job very well. It really eliminates the room reflections as expected. However, the bolt support is flimsy, and it ended up breaking. I fixed it with L-shaped metal holders, and now it's back on its feet, but It is a design oversight of the product. I guess for the price there can't be much more expected.

    Sweet Clarity

Comments about Sterling Audio VMS Vocal Microphone Shield:

I was looking for a way to cut back on room noise in my home songwriting studio, and decided to give the MudGuard by Auralex a try. I had high hopes for the MudGuard, seeing that Auralex are leaders in room treatment products. Wow, was I disappointed. The MudGuard seemed to reflect my voice back into the mic worse than the room sound, and created this boxy sound that didn't help my mixing at all. I gave up on vocal shields for a while, until I came across the Sterling VMS. I took it home, and set it up with my SM7B and laid a track down just to try it out. Huge difference. The shield helped cut back on room reflections, and paired with the SM7B it's about as dry as it can be. My vocal tracks take EQ, Compression, and Reverb better than ever before. This is one product that has been a game changer for me. I primarily use dynamic mics in my home songwriting studio, as to keep things tight and clean, and the Sterling VMS took it to the next level. I might even invest in a condenser!

    Exactly what I needed!

Comments about Sterling Audio VMS Vocal Microphone Shield:

I use the shield for both voiceovers and vocals, and it does exactly what I need it to do - provide me with a personal vocal booth. Even more notable was the extraordinary work Guitar Center went through to get this to me when my original order had been canceled due to the product being discontinued. One phone call and a few minutes later, I had my order fulfilled through the San Bernardino store (thanks guys!), and it showed up at my door 2 days later. Simply amazing! It's always good to know that Guitar Center has what I need, when I need it. Great job, and great product!

    Decent for its intended purpose

Comments about Sterling Audio VMS Vocal Microphone Shield:

I purchased this item today at my local GC. Easy to assemble and attach to my mic stand as expected. It is very light which can be a plus. Good for hobbyists or beginners. I would recommend this if you already have a decent acoustically treated room to get a more "dry" sound. If you do not have an acoustically treated room I would recommend something a bit more professional such as the SE Reflexion Filter.
