Overview

Certain vintage and modern German mics are lusted after for their ability to produce full-bodied vocals with a unique sheen that has come to be known as "air." Of course they also come with a throat-clogging price tag (and that's just the modern ones, vintage market prices bring you closer to cardiac arrest). However, Sterling Audio has found a way to bring you that vintage FET sound without the mind-numbing price tag ” the Sterling ST77 large-diaphragm condenser.

Sterling designed the ST77 condenser mic around a Class-A discrete FET mic amp specially chosen to match its cardioid, large diaphragm capsule. The capsule itself has been sized and tuned to provide a silky and airy top end with a full, warm mid-range reminiscent of vintage microphones. Hand-selected internal components create a sound that flatters vocals and instruments.

Requires phantom power.

Features

The best mic nobody knows about

By Shawn Fussell

from Dallas, Texas

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

The ST77 is a simple LDC microphone with no fancy features. All the features lie within the path from the diaphragm to the XLR output on the bottom of the chassis. The ST77 isn't even a fancy color. But she's built like a tank, weighs a ton, and delivers what it's made to do. Exceptional detail for a price way cheaper than it sounds. I came across a used one a while back that had some loose wires on the XLR output. A simple fix and later that day I was using it. Could not believe how much better this mic was against my other condensers. Liked it so much I bought a new one (ST77) so I would have a matching set. Wonderful mics. I have done tons of studio work and I am also a full time musician, songwriter, and producer of 25 years. Recorded other people, have been recorded...etc. I know what a good mic sounds like. Don't be fooled by the other reviews of the sterling brand. I was leery at first, too. I think people are misinterpreting clarity as 'brittle top end', not stopping to consider that maybe it's just the mic picking up your brittle and harsh cheap instruments and small gauge strings. Where other cheaper mics are curved to enhance the cheap gear they are recording, the ST77 will make your sorry gear sound sorry. Because that is what it's picking up. But same is true in reverse...if your source is good, then look no further than a high pass filter when you mix. It's just that clean.

FET ROCKS!

By Enrique

from SLP, MX

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I used to record my vocals with a CAD GXL(global audio) and then i tried an AT2020.... but none of them gave me the quality that i wanted, then i realized it was time to buy something serious, i tried the shure sm7b, and then this baby, my precious ST77, as i am rock Vocal i did shootout with them to see wich one captured better the gritty and raspy sound of harmonics overtone (singers know what im talking about) the sm7b was awesome! but, there was something at that ST77 that sounded warmer, and more detailed, maybe the fact that it is a condenser mic and the sm7b is not, but both are vocal recording mics at the end the ST77 won, and i am happier now with the sound of my voice recordings, this thing capture almost EVERYSOUND! so get a quiet and full of auralex room to do your recordings and enjoy the rich full sound of FET... this is also a great overhead for drums, my drummer used it twice to record some demos just this and a kick mic, and it sound pretty nice. GET YOURS!

Clarity, Warmth, Good Pricing, ALL IN ONE!

By Adan Barrios

from Chicago IL

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I bought this cardioid microphone about two years ago, and I am completely satisfied with it. The warmth and the clarity I get out of it is almost to the neumann sound. I have this mic connected to the presonus eureka, and the sound of the vocals the this mic puts out is a that professional sound everyone wants.

Outstanding Mic

By Jay (jboog)

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I wanted to post a review because I wasn't sure about sticking with this mic or getting the Baby Bottle, like the other reviewer, I thought for what I was recording, it might not fit the best. But after having it for a week and going threw a couple sessions, I think this mic is GREAT!!! It is so clear and responsive. I don't have the best mic pre but with a little tweak, this mic out shines my previous mics by far!! It sits so well in my mixes right after recording, not much eqing is needed(in most cases) and the clarity just stands out, so everything that is said is heard!!!! Recomend this mic 100% to all who is looking around this price range! A mic well worth more!!!!

Awesome mic

By HighLife

from East Haven, ct

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This mic has GREAT sound quality. I wasnt sure if I was going to get this mic, I was more interested in the Blue Baby Bottle. So I took a chance on getting the sterling st77. I ended up loving this mic. I use it mainly for Hip Hop vocals and it sounds awesome! You wont regret it, if this is the mic u choose. Great price too. Easily worth $1000 or more.

Outstanding!

By Drummingreg

from florida

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This mic is soooo clear. It picks up every little bit of detail you throw at it. The sound quality is off the charts. IT should be priced way more than it is. I am only using this with a mbox 2 mini and the sound is still very good. Buy this, you wont regret it.

Thank god I bought this mic!

By J.A.N

from Chatsworth GA

Comments about Sterling Audio ST77 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

My god where do I start first of all I think there is no mic outhere better than this for less than 1k. The sound is full and clear and crisp and I was very pleased with the stunnig results of this mic. And the other thing is that I didn't even use a good preamp with this mic, The one that I used was the presonus Tubepre and It sounded amazing. Another thing that I found out is that is very durable, because when i first got it I was trying to put it on the shock mount and dropped it from a distance of 4' feet and that things still worked flawlesly. The last thing that I have to say is that if your ready to take it to the next level than this is a serious mic for you trust me on this one. -Juan
