The Sterling Audio ST55 is an FET condenser microphone that employs a large capsule with an ultra-thin 3-micron evaporated gold Mylar diaphragm. The ST55 mic is built with an exclusive process that extends high frequencies and improves details and depth on both vocal and instrument recordings. The FET Class-A electronics provide smooth, warm sound.

Sterling Audio microphones employ several advanced technologies that separate their large-diaphragm condenser mics from the rest of the pack.

One of the more important advancements is their Disk Resonator system. With it, Sterling Audio is uniquely able to compensate for the 14kHz frequency roll-off that is inherent in large diaphragm mics. As any good audio engineer knows, this deficiency translates to a lack of sparkle from high-frequency sound sources.

Other manufacturers have typically solved this problem by cutting other frequencies and then increasing the entire signal to help even out the frequency range. Unfortunately, this results in increased noise.

Disk Resonator Technology incorporates a brass umbrella that protrudes from the center of the diaphragm in Sterling Audio's ST55 microphone. It gently boosts the diaphragm sensitivity to shorter sound waves, allowing it to respond more accurately to those all-important higher frequencies. The result is optimal sensitivity, full frequency response, and a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Another piece of audio wizardry comes in the form of the ultra-thin diaphragm membrane made of Mylar. While most modern condenser diaphragms are 6 to 12 microns in thickness, Sterling Audio, in association with 3M, has produced a highly resilient Mylar that measures a mere 3 microns. This allows the ST55 to deliver an extraordinary degree of sensitivity.
Requires phantom power.

The ST55 is a top performing microphone at a humble price. I bought a used one during a recent stay in the United States. Out of curiosity, not because I needed another mike. First thing you do when you buy a microphone is unscrew it to ascertain it's Chinese allright. Then of course you set it up and perform a listening/recording test. You decide if you like what you hear when listening to the mike alone and in comparison to other microphones, in (their) various applications. Surprisingly, considering its affordability, the ST55 represents an immediate advance over conventional condenser mics in its price range. It is quiet and clear, while the highs are not overpronounced and in balance with the rather warm midrange and very convincing low end. And it doesn't stop there. I have gone as far as putting it alongside the best multi-purpose microphone I have got, regarded by many the king of condensers, which is my Neumann u47. Leaving the technical differences what they are, the ST55 holds up more than nicely, compared to top-end. I rate it excellent.

I was recently surprised to see this mic as it is obviously a a renamed Groove Tube GT55 right down to the case. A decent Mic for the price, with accurate reproduction, but I find it a little bland for vocals, no sizzle. The bass roll-of and 10 db attenuation are nice features at this price. Think the RODE NT1A provides better sound for the same price

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I've had this mic for a few years and have had the chance to try out some other mics that are far more high-end during those years. Honestly, it's not as clear and pristine as an extreme high-end ribbon or tube mic, but it can still compete with some of the more mid-to-high end mics. It's definitely good enough for just about any home studio or amateur recording enthusiast. We normally use the ST55 for vocals but we've used them with success as room mics and overheads on drums, and even to quickly mic my entire band's practice. The sound reproduction seems very accurate, as far as my ears can tell, and don't have any sort of background noise or hum.

The build quality seems solid and well-made. However, all large diaphragm condensers are fragile by their nature, so we're always careful with it anyways. The leather carrying case it comes with is kind of a joke. It looks sharp, but doesn't provide much in the way of protection.

Overall, a great deal on a very adequate mic. It'll serve most people's needs, so long as you take proper care of it.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I have used this microphone to capture vocals, acoustic guitars and most recently it has become my overhead mic of choice for the drum kit. I also have the Sterling Audio ST77. The ST77 is in my vocal both while the ST55 is 38 inches directly above the snare drum capturing the main sound of my drum kit along with two other mics for the Glyn John's style micing technique we are now employing.

Picked up this microphone to use to record a group of 8 men singing our National Anthem acappela. It worked fantastic. We are looking forward to trying it live on other acappela songs. AND the price was right. I do not think you will find another microphone at this price that will perform like this one. If you are looking - don't miss out.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

For the price it is a good mic. I use it for scratch vocals in the preproduction process. It work well with rappers also, expect a supper hard clip on sillabants and the radius is pretty short.
The -10 db pad works well, the roll off does give a better emphasis on certain instruments.
            It's good for the price.
            Great Price.

I bought this mic about a week ago and I'm running it through mogami wire into an art tube pre amp. I don't know a whole lot about mics and stuff but I can say that this mic sounds great. I use it for rap done a little singing into it. It has a nice smooth natural sound and has made mixing a THOUSAND times easier for me. Plus its a very sexy mic in person.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

Everyone that records in my studio always ask, "how do you get my vocals so clear", the answer is Sterling Audio ST55! I run it through my digital mixer with built in pre's, and I get an amazing sound. I've even used it on a "cheap" preamp and got a good sound from it. It's a great vocal mic, and also a good all around mic for guitars and drums.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

We used this to record a bands ep. Great mic if you want a universal mic to use on the go. this is the first mic i grab when i want to a reliable mic. Instead of carrying 5 different mics around.
the -10db and role off are good, i should have gotten the next model up with more options. But this one is great for basic uses
It's amazingly clean. after a touch of 5banEQ taylor for each singer, you will be floored. Its as good as any highend mic.
We used this mic for a test recording because it was the only mic i had on hand. Used it as a single mic for drum over heads, recorded the Vocals, and a acoustic guitar. Sounded as if i was using one of our studio mics.

I also used it as a room mic to record a loud bands rehearsal, It picked up everything as if you were
standing in the room with them bass drum and all.

I helped my friend record her youtube video with this. it sounded legit

throw it in a bathroom and get some stunning overtones in female vox:)

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

This mic is a great mic for the price. i have never liked the sound it gets in a carpeted room. but i cant stand carpet recordings. they take away all of the highs and leave you with a grainy high low end vocal track. This mic works best in a small room with a ton of reverb. (AKA your bathroom vocal booth:P) this thing shines for female vocals.
