A good choice for pro or up and comming enthusiest

Comments about Steinberg MR816X Firewire Interface:

Only draw back is it's a bit tricky on the software. But that's unfortunately typical with many recording devices on the market today. Well worth the effort! Pre's are awesome and quality is dead on professional to the top!

Best Interface for the money!

By Mike

from Fleetville, PA

Comments about Steinberg MR816X Firewire Interface:

My last interface lacked clarity and had a significant noise floor whenever I turned the preamp up. The clock jittered, and nothing sounded good enough to keep. No amount of processing can fix a bad recording. When I first started using the 816x, it was almost like I was hearing for the first time. A ribbon mic over an acoustic guitar made it sound just like what I was hearing! And I turned the pre all the way up, and there was no noise floor! There's no latency, and the pre's are crystal clear. This interface was the best purchase I've made!

Second Impression

Comments about Steinberg MR816X Firewire Interface:

After updating the firmware of the unit and successfully updating and authorizing all the software the key features,"Quick Connect" in Cubase and the headphone mix workproperly. So be prepared to work on getting the unit set up,but it is worth the effort. The unit seems more prone to linehum than the Mackie, but it seems to relate to the instrumentsthat are plugged in than the unit itself generating line noise.I can say the Hi-Z input sounds as good as the Radial JDI direct injection box, this is the only interface / preamp or mixerI can say that about. In the end I can say it is a solid buy.

Very Nice Preamps But...

Comments about Steinberg MR816X Firewire Interface:

I have been looking for an audio interface with eight mic inputs, and in order to try this unit I had to buy it. I have been using two Mackie Onyx 400F units, but have had problems with my audio system being less stable because of the nature of using an "Aggregate Device". I like the Onyx preamps, but I think theD-Pre(s) in this unit sound more open and natural. That is a bigplus. However the software has been a nightmare. Each step ofthe installation has required several attempts to succeed andone of the selling features, the "Quick Connect" to Cubase and the "Headphone Mix" don't function properly. Fortunately the MR Editor software works well enough to set up a control room mix and a headphone mix, but will require you use the softwarerather than the hardware to turn off your control room monitors.( Something they said you would not have to do.) So it has somesoftware drawbacks, but the preamps sound good, that's the point, and the ability to monitor with reverb without printing it is nice, and it works well with my three other DAWs, so I will probably keep it, but if you buy be prepared for some headaches. I will update this review if I discover that I made asetup error or if I discover a new problem.
