Leading the CI series of interface controllers, the CI2+ USB-powered studio comes with its dedicated Cubase AI 6 and WaveLab LE 7 audio workstation. The holistic approach that Steinberg provides in form of its Advanced Integration technology allows this smart system to easily assist entry-level to professional musicians and producers with recording and producing music in first-class quality.
INSTANT PLUG AND PLAY WITH âAI READYâ LED
CI2+ features full plug-and-play support, so thereâs no need to add the parameters to Cubase, only the easy, one-step installation of a USB device. Once the CI2+ has been installed, Cubase detects the launched device and automatically embeds the CI2+ into the Cubase production environment. Visual feedback is provided through the âAI Readyâ LED*. When it lights up, CI2+ is ready to assume control. But instant plug and play is just one of the many advantages CI2+ has to offer as a fully integrated controller of Cubase, forming one powerful hardware/software production system.
YOU NEED A PROJECT ASSISTANT
The Project Assistant provides a wealth of ready-made templates for different styles and scopes like recording, mixing, producing and mastering. The templates contain the number of channels, effects, dynamics, amp simulators and channel inserts â tailored to your particular needs. Creating customized user templates and integrating those into the Launch browser makes recording with a DAW software and audio interface just that easy. Just start up Cubase AI 6, and then hit the AI Knob and scroll down the list of provided templates. The chosen template is selected by pushing the AI Knob a second time. A new project is created with the necessary number of tracks, audio input and output routings, all effects, amp simulator, sounds and much more. The guitar is simply plugged into the input of the CI2+ and you can start creating songs in a jiffy. Thanks to this assistant, initializing a Cubase Project from scratch even saves professionals a lot of time â and as we all know, time is money.
BROWSING MADE EASY
The Browse function* in Cubase helps you by focusing on available files or sounds based on where you are at in the production process. By using the AI Knob on the CI2+ to select one of many project templates, track presets and other presets, thereâs no more excuse for using the mouse extensively. The Browse function also allows you to listen in on samples while browsing, without having to load them first.
The Interactive Recording functionality allows a sequence of up to six transport functions. This sequence can be started and operated with the optional footswitch or the Action Pad on the CI2+, giving you the ability to control Cubase AI 6 (and other Cubase versions) hands free while playing an instrument and simultaneously getting a visual feedback from the Action panel in Cubase. The sequences can either be chosen from a list of templates or you can customize them yourself. The Interactive Recording function provides full freedom of movement, doing away with mouse operation in specific situations and, more importantly, helps to maintain the creative flow. You can operate this functionality by the Action Pad or with the optional footswitch Yamaha FC5.
One of the most innovative features of CI2+ is the revolutionary AI Knob, which is a âpoint and controlâ precision controller. Rather than attempting to replace traditional mouse pointing devices, the AI Knob harnesses the flexibility of a computer mouse to offer unprecedented speed when editing parameters and adjusting settings. The computer mouse is simply moved over the parameter, which is then automatically placed under full precision control through the AI Knob, with no need to make any additional settings in Cubase and WaveLab (from version 7.2), any additional software module or on the interface itself. The parameter can be locked to the AI Knob to retain control when the mouse is moved elsewhere onscreen. The AI Knob of the CI2+ controls all Cubase mixing parameters plus VST 3 and VST 2 plug-ins as well as many parameters in WaveLab. On the CI2+, you will find an enhanced version of the AI Knob that is the same as the one featured on the CC121 Advanced Integration controller. The AI Knob on the CI2+ is also a push encoder that enables new enhanced functionality like the Project Assistant.
The buttons âNextâ, âPreviousâ, âPlay/Stopâ and âRecâ are additional buttons for transport control of Cubase. The âPreviousâ button moves the project cursor on Cubase to the previous marker position. When the browse mode is active the âPreviousâ button moves the cursor to the previous column. Holding down this button starts fast rewind. The âNextâ button moves the project cursor on Cubase to the next marker position. When the browse mode is active the âNextâ button moves the cursor to the next column. Holding down the button starts fast forward. Pressing the âPreviousâ button and the âNextâ button simultaneously enables or disables the Cycle function on Cubase. The âRecâ button starts the recording in Cubase. The âPlay/Stopâ button alternately executes Play or Stop on Cubase.

I bought it by Internet and picked up in store. I like Steinberg Design. It has useful quick buttons, but they have the limitance that they are only available for Cubase applications. I found no way to use them in Logic, which is the software I use to. I only tried buttons for a while, as long as the Cubase trial version last. By the other hand, the quality is good. As good as almost competitors. A friend has a Digibox, the previous version of Avid. I compared the recorded track and I found little difference in quality. I recognize, this is not the maximal in sound, but this is what you get at this price. If you have limitations with money, I would recommend an Audio-Technica AT2020, which is best-seller for only $100. I got quite better sound with these both elements than just using the built-in mic of my laptop.
The Steinberg Cl2+ Kit comes with the Cl2 controller, Cubase 6ai and Wavelab 7 elements software. These three pieces comprise a complete home studio setup. The controller has a sturdy and well-made feel and the software installed easily on my iMac.
The registration process was cumbersome, as the software and the guide and the online tutorials don't all tell the same steps, which resulted in an email to tech support. The did respond within 24 hours with clear and relatively simple steps which corrected the registration issue.
One other complaint is that the MP3 codec is not included. After a brief trial period, it must be purchased. For a workaround, I exported the finished mix as a .wav file, opened in audacity and exported as an MP3. For the cost of the Steinberg kit, I really feel the MP3 codec should be included.
The VST effects are pretty good and offer a massive quality improvement over previous budget studio setups I have tried in the past. The first trial song I recorded included two guitars, bass and vocals. I did a quick mixdown and added effects, which to my ear sounded fantastic.
The documentation included on the CDs is somewhat hard to understand. I prefer to have each topic given a overview tutorial and a complete deep dive discussion. The included manuals stick to complete deep dive discussions which provide way more information than I was ready to digest on day one.
After a few days of using the Cubase 6AI you will be asked to upgrade to Cubase 6 Elements. The cost of the update was relatively small for what it offered in increased tracks, effect sends and number of effects. I opted for the upgrade and was almost immediately satisfied and glad I did.
This production kit from Steinberg offers a solid feel and lots of software for a modest price. The included Cubase ai6 and Wavelab le7 software took about 30 minutes to get installed on my iMac, and when I plugged in the controller it was automatically configured very quickly. The real test of a recording package for me is how quickly can I turn out a demo, and I was able to do this very quickly and easily. In fact, the included Cubase ai6 includes templates which really are quite useful. I selected the acoustic+vocal preset and followed the suggestions on screen (which mic to use for which input, etc.) I set levels, armed the tracks and hit record. Easy! The audio quality of the recording was impressive, with nice eq and a bit of chorus added in as part of the template. Very easy to use and worked well.
The included printed manual is very thick, but written in like 10 languages, so the portion that applies to you is only a few pages (a big quick start guide really). There are lots of electronic materials, but would rather read the manuals on the sofa rather than at my studio desk. Also, the on-screen pop-up help is nearly non-existent, so there is a bit of guessing to be done if you don't read the electronic manual(which is VERY helpful). I would like the ability to install the software on two computers - one for the studio and one for my laptop.
