Great first 5-String

By Bryan

from Virginia Beach, VA

I bought this 5 string because I wanted something that was cost effective and played well. I was not disappointed. The action on the bass is very nice. The electronics are very good for the price point. I use this exclusively for contemporary worship music. I am very pleased with the has been a great tool for me to get better at 5 string. The guitar is heavy so beware if you are a lightweight. All in all, I would highly recommend this to someone who is new to bass playing and looking for a good quality 5 string that they can use for performances and to learn more about bass.

Great Budget 5-String!

By Karl

from Seattle, WA

Before I begin, let me say that this Bass (I have the Olympic White version) is plugged into a GK MB500 head and through a GK MBE series 4x10 & 1x15 stack or a Bergantino 1x12 with the same head. So, onto the review. First, I own the four string sister of this Bass which has Seymour Duncan design pickups which heavily influenced me to buy this five string version. Out of the box, I changed the strings with DR Hi-Beams 45-125 gauge, set up the Bass which really didn't need too much adjustment for my personal preference. The weight is not bad, and I've certainly handled heavier five's. The overall quality is "good" not exceptional, the paint finish is at least smooth, but a little flat, the frets are well machined and don't scratch against the hand unlike some cheap basses, and the back of the neck is glossy and may be sticky for some (I'm okay with it). The nut is decent, but could use an upgrade. The tuners do a decent job of keeping the strings in tune (but that depends on your technique and music you play). You definitely want to replace the bridge, because the sustain is so-so with the stock bridge. The pick-ups aren't the same Seymour Duncan designs as its four string sister and I found them a little low in volume. As for the B string, depending on how you "EQ" it or combine it with effects (I mainly use compression), it can get muddy (at least on my rig) and sounds a little flat if you try to slap it. Overall, I am very happy with this instrument for the price. This Bass was an alternate to the really nice Darryl Jones 5 Olympic White that I played and really, REALLY liked, but didn't want to pay the $1300 for it. I chose this Squier because I liked it's 4 string counterpart and this is the fourth Squier Bass I own. If you're looking for an entry level five or just want one for the heck of it and have great EQ and compression, this will work for you.

By Dennis Szakaly

from Walnutport, PA.

I'm a long time Fender American Customer, (first Fender I purchased in 1972, a "P" Bass)and I finally decided to try a 5-String. Not knowing if I could pick-up playing a 5-String I decided to stay at the low end of the price list. SO I went for this Squire. The Bass was delivered safely. Bass was set up and ready to go. Tuned it up, Plugged it into my SWR, and the tone and feel was great. For the money spent on this low end Fender, this Bass is a solid Investment. THANKS Guitar Center, Thanks Squire.
