This bass represents a jazz V costing many times the price. I have lots of professional grade basses already that I am happy working with, but no jazz V. So this was a way for me to satisfy that "GAS" without breaking the bank. I knew from the reviews that it would be good and need some set up, but the same can be said about my high end basses. They always need atleast some string change, and fine tuning. This bass was no exception that way. I did a truss rod adjustment, looser, to give more relief in the neck. This helped with some of the fret buzz. But I am taking the bass to my luthier for a good fret leveling to make it play to my standards. It is a remarkably well made instrument for the money. My standards are pretty high, because I spend so much time playing. I really don't have time to fight with a bass that can't cut it. To my great pleasure, the maple body gives the bass a very punchy sound. I have noticed that some people install upgrades (mods) on this modle. I'll say that I am considering a new bridge, but haven't decided yet if I'll be satisfied with the stock one. I'm having trouble getting the B string to fit correctly over the bridge and intonate correctly. I'm looking into other strings, but might do a string through bridge modification. As for the pickups, they need some EQ alright. I have an Aguilar Tone Hamer pedal that provides the same type of preamp as you would have if you installed one on the bass, only you just plug in, set it and play. The Tone Hammer really makes the bass sound like a much more expensive bass. I can get everything from Marcus Miller's tone to old school Motown out of the bass. I bought this bass on a whim, to satisfy my "jones" for a Fender Jazz V. I am very happy. I think the tune up; the hand worked fret work is going to put this bass right where I want it. I expect to pay extra to have that done, but this bass will sound and play well enough to have it's place with my other work basses. I am certain that the bass kicks butt! Looking forward. Recomend getting one. But don't be surprised if you need to fine tune it to your liking. Hope this helps you!

Not what I expected when I read other comments, I guess you get what you pay for and in my opinion this bass is low quality one big problem is all the buzz and noise distortion from the pre amp board you can't adjust anything without start getting noise and distortion like a loose wire, these single cool pick ups are useless. Looking into Sire brand now.

Most versatile bass for the $$$.
Even more versatile than the active Squier Modified Vintage PJ Jaguar bass.

Great slap sound, great rock sound. Just add a bit of punch and low end on the amp to make it sound perfect.

Received guitar in a box. They just threw it in a box with no packing material or double box. Obviously damaged. I refused shipment after waiting so anxiously. Big bummer

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass V 5-String Electric Bass:

I gave this bass a four because of the weak pick ups. Aside from that, this bass is an absolute dream to play. The pics on this website do not do the bass any justice and especially the natural colored one. The body and neck are well balanced and you have that solid and heavy feel which you get from instruments made out of maple. The pots are smooth and not scratchy and the input jack is completely noiseless (something I've seldom seen on cheap instruments). The neck on mine is straight and the frets are not sharp. It holds it's tuning really well and quality and craftsmanship on this bass makes you forget that you are playing a Squier (I have gotten tons of compliments from people who think it's a Fender and end up shocked when I tell them it's a Squier). The only drawback are the weak pick ups. I am going to install some Basslines Quarter Pounder on mine and I have no doubt in my mind that it will give any Fender bass a run for it's money. Bottom line, get this bass. You are getting MIM Fender quality for less than you think.

This is a great bass at an even better price. It has a great neck that is as smooth and playable as the American deluxe which is priced at $1,800+.....I now use this as my main go to instrument and take it everywhere I go. I prefer active electronics but this one being passive really impresses me. If you're needing a great jazz bass then this is the one

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass V 5-String Electric Bass:

I've had this Bass for a few years and I reallly dig it. My main bass has been a '98 Fender MIM Jazz that I bought new. I really wanted a 5 string but didn't want to spend a lot. I saw great reviews and took the chance and online ordered a used one from GC. The finish is killer, the build quality and neck/body fit are solid and fretwork were smooth. A new set of strings and a few adjustments and this has been an awesome instrument. The neck is smooth, a little wide at first but the spacing is easy to get used to. The Duncan Designed pickups sound great especially with a bit of gain. This is a great all around instrument, a little heavy so get a wide strap.
