I had a 1977 American Standard J Bass for 35 years; as a guitarist I needed 4 strings for recording & it sounded great. I even played it in a folk rock band [a personal goal to play bass for 3 sets].
After someone told me of it's resale value, I sold it for $2k+, got a nice Martin & picked up this Squire Reissue for under 3 Bones.
The neck feels like my '77 & it's like an old friend. The body is about 20% lighter, but that's fine with me. The pickups are alright, but I may swap out the bridge PU. They got pretty darn close in this reissue.

I was very excited for this bass I ordered it after I sent back a squire vintage modified precision V. I was very disappointed when I received this the neck was barely attached to the body. All of the screw holes were drilled too big and at wierd angles the agathis body is extremely light and has an airy empty tone to it it is so light that the bass is neck heavy. It has no balance which makes it very hard to play. That being said the neck feels amazing and the electronics are very nice. If I were to buy this again I would order the 70's jazz and not the 77 as it has a maple body.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 77:

I am a long time guitarist and aspiring singer who likes to record songs as a hobby. Within the last year I began learning the piano, and recently decided to take up playing bass as well ... both to supplement my recording activities.

By no means am I a professional musician, but I play guitar pretty well, my vocal skills are "acceptable", and I am quickly learning basic keyboard and bass techniques.

I purchased this bass to support my learning and expand the tonal palette of my recording. I was quite impressed with the quality of instrument that I could purchase at this price point.

Based on my many years of experience with guitars, and owning several higher end models from Fender, Gibson and PRS, I believe that the Squier VM Jazz Bass 77 is suitable for more than just beginners.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 77:

I have nothing bad to say about this bass!! Even out of the box with no setup it sounds great and there was very little intonation. A bit more fret buzz than I like but not enough that I was perosonall worried about. It arrived on a Thursday and I played it out the following Saturday. It does feel very light which I was concerned with but there is absolutely no loss in tone. I used mild effects on my pj bass and this one sounds great plugged straight in especially if you are comfortable blending your pickups. The inlays make this bass the maple finger board and mop inlays offset the black body perfectly.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 77:

Great bass! Great neck. setup well out of the box. I got the 3 tone sunburst, maple neck with white pearl inlays and it's a looker. Miner setup after a few days of use and my specs. From bright and punchy to dark and wooly. I'm very happy.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 77:

I had a set of Aguilar Jazz pickups and a John East Retro pre-amp laying around the house so I decided to order an "inexpensive" bass and perform some upgrades.

Much to my surprise, this bass needed no upgrades!

I own an Fender American P, a Fender Mexican Deluxe PJ, and this is my go-to bass. I have used it on my past few gigs and my last 2 recording sessions.

This is a pleasant surprise, and a great value!

I like this bass a lot. It feels nice, looks great and is fun to play. The only drawback - it's a little bit light. But for the price you can't beat it.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 77:

I have 12 basses - all the way from high end G&L USA made basses through high end Ibanez and Peavey basses. I've owned the USA version of this back in the 80s. Once I bought this bass those high end basses stay home - I have been taking this Squire VM and a Squire VM shortscale Jag to gigs instead. They sound great. They have great necks. They are really light - a plus on 90 minute sets. And you don't worry that they might be stolen or damaged. Great gear for working musicians

It's been my experience that Fender basses record very easily. I was tired of borrowing a Fender Jazz bass from a friend, so I picked up this Squier version for 255 on black friday. It looks great, it plays great & even a simple d.i. for recording gives me a really solid sound. I have small hands, but the neck on this is comfortable. Fit and finish are high quality, except for a bit of extra glue at the nut, no biggie, though. I would recommend this bass to anyone. It sounds just as good to me as the Fender version, for 255!!!

I'm from Mexico, bought this badboy online and picked it up there in USA. I'm not an expert, but this Bass sounds like Odin's intestines and feels like a beautiful woman. I'm 100% sure this Bass is good for any level of player. Tis really sublime. I'd recommend this ax to anyone. And thank you Guitar Center, you made it easier for me.

I got this bass at a crazy low price. For the money you pay, you really can't do any better! The gloss finish of the neck makes it feel like a bass 3 times the price. The pickups, despite being single coil J pickups, do NOT feed back. Just an amazing value. Squier is hitting out of the ballpark consistently these days. I've played for over 20 years and these guitars hold their own to U.S. made models.
