Good for the price ... but ...

By Eric Ness

from Baltimore, Maryland

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

I'll start out by saying that I play guitar, not bass. My wife decided she wanted to take up the bass, so we went looking for something for her to start with. The Jag is a decent starter instrument. The ones we looked at were reasonably well made, "felt right", and had decent tone. I'd rate it above the Ibanez we tried out by a good margin. However, if you can afford just a bit more, I'd suggest looking at the Schecter line instead. We ended up getting the Stiletto Extreme-4. There's two ways of looking at this ... yes, the Stiletto cost about twice as much. On the other hand, that's only $200 more, for an instrument you will probably keep forever, vs. a starter instrument you will probably set aside in a year or two if you are serious about playing. The Schecter is very well made, the EQs and pickups yield a great range of tone, esp. when paired with a good amp. The bridge is solid, providing great sustain esp. for a < $400 bass. It goes quite low without sounding muddy. The Schecter leans more towards the heavier rock/metal sound that most are probably wanting, too ... though it is decently clean with the right amp combination and settings. I do like this Jag, and if I was looking to spend $200, I'd pick it over others in this price range ... but if you can swing the $400 instead, I'd recommend at least looking at the Schecter. As a side note, the Jag is a 20-fret bass, so if you're looking for something for a young person who is just starting out, the size of this may be more manageable and just what you want. Otherwise, make sure you want a 20-fret rather than a 24 fret ...

This bass is gggggggreat!

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

This was my first ever bass...and it is definetly worth the $200 I spent. If you are starting off...i recomend this bass. Even if you are looking for a good bass i recomend it. Just grab this, a b20 Acoustic amp, some acessories, and a book(preferably the Hal Lenoard Bass Method Beginners Pack) and you'll rockin fast. Only problem is it doesnt have a full 24 frets. So songs popular to the bass such as Orion cannot b played. However by the time you can play Orion...just get another bass.

SWEET!!!

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

Took my Dean Edge 09 in for a repair and tried every bass on the wall through the same amp I own (Acoustic BA50). The Squier Jag HB had the best sound of them all, although the used BC Rich sounded awesome, just too much damage. I do not own the Dean anymore. The Jag HB is no residing in my stand instead. Great bargain and almost infinite sound possibilities. Can't find ANYTHING not right with it. Well, one thing, I don;t like red for my bass, but hey it was all they had. BUY IT!!!! You will NOT be disappointed!!!

Almost perfect in this price range

By GLENN WEATHERSPOON

from Denver, CO

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

Overall this bass is very nice, if it fits you. Squier just missed getting it perfect. The VM Jag comes in four flavors: PJ active, HB active, SS active and PJ passive. On every single one they outfitted it with a Jazz profile neck. In my opinion, at least one should have been offered with the Precision profile. A wider nut and thicker neck would have differentiated the bass from the rest of the pack and broadened the demographic this bass would appeal to. The fit and finish are superb, the weight is great, the sound is very good. I almost pulled the trigger on a PJ active in red, but that skinny neck and 1.5" nut just cramped me and forced me to look for other, beefier profile options. Hence, the 3 stars.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

I have two of these, the squire jag with duncans and this one. both are great basses. the first thing I did was put better bridges on both of them and I replaced the cheap plastic knobs with chrome speed knobs. that's what I love about fender and squire basses, they're fully customizable. you wont be sorry if you buy one

Beautiful Guitar! Love it!

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

I bought this guitar in Candy Apple Red as a birthday gift to my guy and he fell in love at first sight! He absolutely love the clear sounds that comes out of the guitar. By the way he is a beginner and I absolutely recommend. The only reason I gave it a 4 stars is because it was shipped to me bent. Once we got that sorted out it was fine.

Great for a beginner but...

By Justin

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special Humbucker:

This is my first bass guitar, I love the feel of it. It is a good balance and the fret board has a nice smooth feel. There are alot of eq adjustments for the price it is at. However, here is the problem. The bridge vibrates heavily; whether you play with a pick, finger style, or slap bass. Not to mention, the pick up is pretty terrible, even by beginners' standards. It distorts, the sound is unbalanced and adjusting it does nothing. I am not a huge engineer aficionado, but when i play this on even a good intermediate bass amp, it just does not sound like a bass guitar, it sounds way too washed out, muddy and all around unpleasant. Though, the only way to fix some of these problems is to run it through an overdrive channel, turn down the gain and eq the mids alittle bit up. All in all, it isnt a terrible piece of garbage; but it is just not the quality you want, even as a beginner. I might just stay with it and trade it in for a better bass guitar.
