I was in the market for a five string and read many reviews on this bass before purchasing it. For the price this bass is a steal. Out of the box I had to slightly adjust the truss rod to get the neck where I like it. Before plugging it in I played it acoustically and man, it even sounded good unplugged. The satin finish on the neck has a great, smooth feel and it's easy to play. The B-String is punchy and articulate as the EAD and G Strings. Plugged in the tone is solid and you can get great sounds from the active electronics this bass offers. I had intentions of modding the Jaguar before I received it and now that I've had the chance to play it at a couple of gigs I don't think I'm going to change anything on it. It looks like a boutique bass with the beautiful finish on the body and plays like one too.

I highly recommend this bass.

I have owned several Squier basses in the past, most recently a P-Bass V that was outstanding. Thus, I have come to expect very good quality from Squier in their Indonesian manufactured basses. Sadly, this was not the case in my recent purchase of a Jaguar Bass V Special. Murphy must have worked the day shift the day this bass was made. Everything that could go wrong, has. Pros: Nice finish, especially the satin neck. Under 10 lbs. weight. Pretty good for a fiver with a 1-7/8" nut. Nice J-Bass pickup with individual adjustable poles. Cons: Nothing was setup (although in fairness, that would be impossible, given what follows). Plus: Dead spots on the neck. P-bass pickup will not adjust to the correct height. Bridge placement and/or fretboard height has rendered the instrument unable to intonate. I am holding out hope that this is a one-off lemon. So, after only owning this for three days (and spending 5 hours trying to get it setup properly), back it goes to GC in exchange for another.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V Special:

While I am not primarily a bassist, I have played and recorded a lot of bass tracks and some with very high end basses and this bass stands right there with them. Great feeling neck and the low B string really helps with alternate tunings as opposed to de tuning a 4 string.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V Special:

So I agree with some other reservations I've read about this bass -- it is a bit of a nose diver, and I find bass boost superfluous, and if your battery dies, your pickups are dead too. But it plays great, it looks great (I got the sunburst), it's fun, and the craftsmanship for the price is really jaw-dropping. My pickguard has one screw in it that wasn't driven in completely straight, but otherwise the bass is pretty flawless. Mine came set up well, with the intonation right on. I raised the bridge saddles because I prefer higher action, but that's a matter of taste. If you want to try your hand at a 5-string without spending a lot of money, this bass is perfect. And I can't say for sure, but I think that even if you become proficient, you'll still find it more than adequate.

Really dig the sound, have used it for recording and it has been fun the work with! Have had many basses over the years and I don't think I'll get tired of this one. Great for beginners and intermediate players. Also looks really cool!!! My go to is a Thunderbird so I'm used to the heavier weight but it definitely doesn't kill your shoulder after playing for 3+ hours. Never owned a squire before and I am pretty happy with my Purchase

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V Special:

I really love this bass. It has great flexibility in tone and fantastic craftsmanship on nearly all counts.

It's one flaw for me was the G string is sitting too close to the edge of the fretboard on the nut end. It needs to be a hair in so you don't accidentally pull the string off the fretboard. However - it's an easy fix. Just get a new nut for under $15 usd. Problem for me is solved. The GC guy adjusted the action. It came a bit high for my tastes but it adjusted down quite well with no issues.

It is hard to believe how much quality and value they pack into this bass for the price. Extremely satisfied. Highly recommend.

      Great bass

      By Jeremy

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V Special:

I like this bass. It sounds very metallic on the b string but the bass boost removed all of that sound. The string spacing is wide but it's not terrible. It has some neck dive but I fix that by using a wider strap and wearing it a bit higher.

      terrific value

      By WARD

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V Special:

Though bass guitar is not my main instrument, I decided to get a real bass because I was unhappy with the "virtual" basses I was using in recordings. Nothin' like the real thing, folks: in spite of my limitations as a bass player, it sounds much better already than stuff I played on a keyboard. So: why, specifically, this bass? 1) I wanted a Fender-branded instrument, and Squier is pretty much a Fender; 2) I really like the Jaguar-style body; 3) The innovative combination of Jazz- and Precision-style pickups does, indeed, give a wide variety of tones; and 4) the 5-string model gives me a low C and D-flat, two of my favorite keys. I got a no-charge setup at the Guitar Center where I bought the bass (intonation, string height, all good) and the tech showed me a lot of things about basses I didn't know. His comments convinced me that, in spite of the low price, this is a quality instrument; certainly anyone like me, a non-gigging semi-pro looking for something to record with, will be very satisfied. And even you professionals: note that the closest runner-up I found in the Fender stable was about six hundred bucks. If I were you I'd carefully consider how I might spend that extra $350 I'd saved: new amp head? Effects box? Your choice, folks... I think this Squier Jag is an unbeatable deal. (BTW: I got the sunburst finish - absolutely gorgeous. Mmm, mmm.)

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V Special:

My only 2 cons. Active only....you better keep an extra battery. Not sure how long they last but if it dies on stage....you're screwed lol. When I first recieved mine, it was in bad shape. The action/intonation was way off and non-playable. The neck had shrank at some point between Kansas City and North Carolina causing major "fret sprout"...look it up. Finally after an emergency setup/alteration at my local guitar shop all is well. All my years of playing ive been anti jazz. Mostly owning ibanez, etc. I cant put this thing down. Unlike a standard jazz, the jaguar body islighter to hold, smaller up against me, more comfy, and looks better IMO. The tone this thing can dial up is unbelievable. Think about it. You have two different style pickups each with their own volume. Along with what I call a bass boost and last, treble boost. So you can go pbass, jazz bass, and anything in between. Squier done a great job with these basses. At least on the one i have. Its a Squier so its Fender's low end line...inferior to Fender American, mexican, n japanese makes. As for me, im no "nit pick". I dont have to spend 1500 on an american made jazz to rest assured i have a top notch neck, good quality pups, n etc. Thats irrelevant. I believe the fingers should do the talkin. When tweaked right along with good talent n skill...from 500ft away Victor.Wooten would assume youre playin a MIA fender lol.
The bass sounds good, feels good, n looks good to me! For 250 it exceeds all expectations. Gets the job done every time in the studio n on stage. So go ahead, buy it as a back up.trust me... It'll be your go to bass at those gigs where there's nobody to impress in the audience with your high.emd gear.
