I bought one of these used on a whim keep around the house so I can grab it and play for 10 minutes and not worry about it laying around. What a surprise! It is super fun to play. I kept hunting around and bought 3 used. So, then I went back to my Jazz and I noticed how much more effort it took to stretch across frets. Turns out this bass has a neck that is 4 INCHES SHORTER than my jazz. Then I had an idea, I basically took it a part, and replaced the electronics, bridge, tuning pegs, made a custom pearl pickguard. Now it looks and sounds like a jazz. My only complaint is you have to be really realy careful if you work on it, it is very easy to strip out the holes because the body wood is very soft. Don't use power tools, use hand tools. I actually moved up one size screw on the new bridge because the normal size felt like they would strip when I went to make them snug. If Fender upgraded this bass , it would be an amazing bass. Still though, the ones i didn't modify are good basses. Great if you have smaller hands. It's just about the size of a strat. It almost fits in a strat case.

An Absolute Beginner's Perspective

I found the bass to be satisfactory for learning. My main complaint is that the face plate was dinged up somewhat when I received the bass, with what looked like tool marks.

Very shocked!

By Lauren Moore

from Louisiana

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

I own a Fender Jaguar bass(not the modern player series.) I payed around $700 for it brand new a couple of years ago. I love that bass to death. I bought one of these Squier SS Jags for my wife because she wanted to learn how to play bass. I took it out of the box to set it up for her and was shocked that even right out of the box it was good to go and sounded amazing for the price. It does not have the bells and whistles that mine has, but the sound was spot on for that vintage tone. Easy to play, light weight and the silver was a nicer in person than the picture online shows. It isn't built like a $1000 bass, but it sure doesn't sound or play like a cheap one either. My wife was super happy except for how long it took me to "test" it out for her. It has a wide range of tones and you will be able to find the sound you are looking for.

These pickups are on a Squier?

By Matt

from Valdosta, GA

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

So while I was on tour with my band, we stopped at a music store to pass time before a show. I picked up this bass to make jokes about it to my drummer and play smoke on the water. I was super surprised when I started playing it, how nice it felt. I've played basses from the 500 dollar range to the 2000 dollar range, and something about cheap basses normally turn me on to play them. Something about if I break them on stage by lighting them on fire or throwing them 30 feet in the air and not catching them, makes me not worried. But even for a cheap bass, it felt great. It's super light and a fast neck. I plugged into the new headlite head from SWR and was blown away from the sound. I can't believe Fender made good pickups to put in a Squire. I only give it a 4 out of 5 because the wood on the body is so cheap feeling but it's a must buy.

What's not to like?

By Jefferson Hancock

from Santa Cruz, CA

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

Great bass for the money. Played it tonight at a gig. Sounded fantastic. Plenty of low end. Good enough growl on high end. Audience members couldn't believe it when I told 'em how much I paid for it, and it looks terrific. Great action out of the box. No adjustment required. Stays in tune. Great string bending for English when you need it. The short scale is a great relief for my aching hands. I'm used to playing a much heavier much longer bass, so I really like being able to move around on this bad boy without much trouble. Hey, it's not the Mustang that I wanted, but it didn't cost 800 bucks either, and it sounds great, though I'm still working out the nuances of the knobs. No pickup selector layout is alien to me, but that's a dumb thing to complain about. Heck, why complain. Great bass! Great price. Nuff said. This is not the piece of junk you'd expect it to be for this price. As someone who's been playing daily for 30 years, I can vouch for this instrument.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

The discovery of a short-scale bass is great! Wow! I now enjoy playing this Fender Jaguar much more than my full-scale Fender P-bass. The short-scale Jaguar has two pickups and is only $50 more than the short-scale Fender Bronco that has only one pickup. Therefore, in my view the Jaguar is an excellent value. Most importantly, the Jaguar is an excellent fit for me. It plays well and sounds awesome. Two Allen wrenches are included in the box and they are important. I recommend that you use these tools to adjust your Jaguar's neck a tiny amount if necessary and adjust the string height a few thousands of an inch to set the action exactly where it feels the best for you. There are many fantastic YouTube videos that clearly demonstrate how to quickly make these simple little adjustments that yield big improvements in how easy any guitar will play.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

I'm a guitar player, 60yrs. since I first played with my big brother. I've had 3 careers since my 5-6 night/wk club gig days, and I've taken up Jazz Theory. A guitar player should know how to think like a bass player, and play bass at times. This fine Squire has perfect geometry, and with some DP126 pups, Deep Talkin' flat wounds and a good professional setup, I get everything I need for less. I used to own and play fine black Jazz bass, would alternate sets with Willie M in the Bees, and at my age a full size Jazz bass no longer makes sense. This is a great compromise, the little SVMJSS plays well, and if I need to play or record at a high level I can. Nice little Jag!

    The jagjuar Short Scale Bass

    By RICHARD WILEY

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

I have tried a few of the short scale basses and rejected them out of hand because they felt like I just had a regular guitar in hand. This new jag rascal is a pleasure to play and has a low end pretty darn close to my 2 34" basses. I have the Silver and am thinking about getting one of the red ones just can I can - it is a fun bass to play.

    Awesome little bass!

    By Matt Peterson

    from St. Paul, MN

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

This bass, for the price, is a wonderful little guitar. I was entertaining the idea of buying this guitar to expand my tone, but had a terrible image of Squier guitars because of the experiences a few friends had early on. After reading a lot of reviews online that praised this little bass, I decided to go play it myself. I got to the store, plugged it into a Fender bass amp, started playing and was sold. I love the look of the Jag bass, and I can't find its style anywhere else. The quality isn't the same as my Fender Jazz, but then it's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. One thing I noticed right away was that the tone on this bass was incredibly flexible in the store. The pickups are actually really nice and responsive while the fret board is smooth and really a pleasure to play on. One thing I did notice is that it sounded a little better through the store's Fender amp than it did through my Ampeg. It's also a very light bass compared to the other cheap basses I've toyed around with. There is some neck dive because of where the strap attaches, but it can be fixed. I have since tuned it up and replaced the pickups and it now plays better than most passive guitars I have played. Beginner or player in need of a new tone - go pick this guitar up. You won't be disappointed. I was going to buy a bass that cost much more, but after buying the bass and replacing some of the parts, I've saved myself upwards of 400 dollars!

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

I am a longtime guitar player just starting out on bass. I have small hands and wrist-tendon issues so this short scale bass with a narrow neck was just what I was looking for. This is much more comfortable for me to play than my friends Jazz bass. At 7lbs 15 oz. it is exactly 1lb lighter than my friends Jazz bass too.

Tone is fine for me. I will only be a home player playing at low volume.

The only issue I have with this bass, and it is minor, is that it sometimes wants to slip off of my lap because of the short lower bout (I sit when I play).

At this price, I give it 5 stars.

Light weight, deep of sound; cured wrist and forearm issues

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

Having played a Fender MIM P Bass Special (with J neck) for the past 12 years and being a player in his 60's, I was beginning to develop pain in my wrist and forearm. The first few gigs played with the Jaguar short-scale has produced no discomfort at all. Yay. When I pick up this bass, I smile. It is noticeably lighter than my P Bass and J Bass. When I begin to play it, I smile again. I am faster and more articulate on the short scale fingerboard. My sound has not been diminished at all. Depending on the strap and position of the bass a little neck-dive is apparent. Yet I somehow compensated. While playing it everything seems entirely balanced. The silver and black finish is distinctive and I appreciate the black headstock. The construction is as righteous as a branded Fender. In photos I can tell that this bass is smaller than the P or J bass. That's a small price to pay for a more comfortable instrument on which I play my best.

Great bass at a great price!

      By Richard

      from Columbus MS

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

I?ve been a professional bassist since 1965, performing with several major name acts. I?ve owned basses ranging in price from $75 (my first bass ? a Sears Silvertone, which I still have) to $2400, plus my $8000 upright. I bought the Squier Jaguar SS after playing one at a Guitar Center. This is a wonderful bass for the price, far beyond what one would expect in build quality and tone. The only negative concern is the bridge pickup. There?s not as much difference in tone between the two pickups as one usually finds in a Jazz style configuration. This is probably due to the relative close spacing of the two pickups. The tone from the bridge pickup is not unusable, it?s just not as distinctive as on other two-pickup basses.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (Short Scale):

Having played bass off and on for 35 years, I resumed playing after retiring. What a world of difference from the 70's and 80's in terms of bang for the buck no doubt due to cheaper Asian production and better engineering and competition.. Don't let anyone tell you that the old basses (and guitars) are better, only for collectors. I played a Fender Mustang USA short scale for quit a few years and then a Precision along with a Gibson. These days, I am selling and updating. I wanted another short scale bass along with the Fender sound. This one delivers with deep bass and good treble, the two pickups work well together although the P bass pickup has more oomph and volume. Action is quite good and it's a blast to play. Makes a good addition to 34' basses. Compared it to my vintage Precision, the P bass has slightly more resonance but not much overall difference. Ten times better than the old and sorry to say, newer Mustangs.

The Squier line is very good, I like them better than the MIM guitars. Also owned a Squier Jazz bass, also very good but returned it for other reasons.

Recommend this bass for those wanting a short scale to have fun as well as to hold its own in a gigging setting. Maybe not as your only bass. Also great for beginners. Price is right.

This bass is light weight, sturdy, beautiful, and plays fast and smooth. If you've ever played pool on a six foot table, then switch to an eight foot you will know how hard the transition can be. With the Jaguar SS, you get to stay at the six foot table. Squire has come a long way. I would match this bass to a much higher end instrument. I love it, especially the candy apple red body. SWEET!

Looking for a bass, I wanted [1] good sound, [2] light weight, [3] good neck & intonation, [4] reasonable price. I got 'em all in the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass (short scale)! The instrument isn't perfect, but pretty close. It's fun to play, sounds great, and the price/value ratio is incredible! In the candy apple red, it even looks smashing! I'm going to pick up a heavier bridge and gutsier bridge pickup at Guitar Fetish dot com, but, right out of the box, this is a bass that sounds and plays like an instrument costing much more.

My daughter and I have just started playing bass and guitar this year. We have a Thunderbird, and Ibinez Mikro, and now this Jaguar short-scale. I'm a big guy, but this bass is definitely a lot more comfortable to play than my Thunderbird. The Mikro is too small for me. I would say all three sound great, but the Jaguar is like wearing a glove. I pick it up almost every day. I got the black finish, which looks very nice with the matching black headstock. I would definitely buy it again.

Super bang for the buck! I'm used to playing a 5 string jazz and just wanted something to noodle on and inspire me. This bass did the trick. Fast neck, fat sound and lightweight! It was setup perfectly upon delivery. The P pickup is no joke and has a lot of thump. Some people say the jazz pickup is weak, but who would play the jazz pickup solo? I always thought with PJs, the jazz pickup just adds a bit of growl to the p bass thump. But with the price point of this bass, if you want to change the jazz pickup, go for it. I havent played it out yet but it seems like a sturdy baas. Get it! You won't regret it!

I am 10 years old and just started playing the bass guitar. The size is perfect for me. My dad says the quality workmanship on this bass is fantastic for the price paid. All I know is this is a fun guitar to play.
