I rate it an 8 for overall looks, dependability, playabilty and sound. If you are at least somewhat knowledgeable and have done some research before you plunk down on the counter, you would know that the pickups are not Alnico, but are Ceramic magnet style. There is where your different tone is coming from, hotter, more prone to distort, a litle bit harder to control. You will also know that you are not buying a guitar with upgraded American parts, but rather baser metal parts designed to look as the old strats did. They still are good parts regardless.

Overall, I have gigged, jammed and played the heck out of my personal example and I am fine with it and will remain fine with it bone stock. That's key here. Those expecting raging metal tones, or heavy distortion tones or super hot pickups didn't know what they were buying in the first place. This is a vintage style guitar with parts that are the old generation in design and application. Some love them, some will not.
Buyers going in expecting USA Standard level guitars will be some what disappointed if all they go by is the headstock moniker. This is a quality guitar, made to the old standard using vintage style parts. It's not the newest latest greatest, it's the older design brought to the present, and it's a good design to begin with. Along with it comes the standard issues of stratocasters, tuning instabiity, volume knob too close to the picking area, no load tone control on the bridge pickup.

Feature wise it's no different than a AMSTD, only in appointments such as pickups, tone control options, bridge design, and trem mounting, as it should be it is priced to meet the level of the components mounted. Those expecting Flaming Yngwie right out of the case need to look elsewhere. This is a workingman's guitar built to gig, and not be obsessed over. If you buy this guitar and immediately want to start changing stuff, you have missed the reasoning of the guitar and should have bought the AMSTD instead.
Quality wise, it's not comparable to the AMSTD by price alone, which is basically half. But if you like vintage designs using tried and true methods, it's a good piece that can gig, and bedroom too. My personal example is Arctic white and is going on 5 yrs. old. Living in Hawaii, it has become somewhat yellow creme from the UV, but that's a bonus for me. I find nothing on or in the guitar that screams cheaply made.
Here's my beef. The price went up in 08. Just because. They went all day long for what I paid for mine for example. Suddenly they cost more for the same design is just business I guess. I think for what you are getting, the price is correct and reasonable even if it did go up.

You can buy Strat clones from SX, Turser, Douglas, the list is endless. If they are so intent on slavishly copying the classic leo design, in reality, you get a better guitar from Fender than the rest for a bit more money.

The Fender Standard Stratocaster is one of the best values for budding musicians on the market today. Although made in Mexico, it exhibits all of the features common to other Strats made in the U.S.A. although in a more affordable format. What is nice about this guitar is that, as your music ability improves and your preferences on tone become more established, you do not have to trade this guitar in for another model. It is completely upgradeable from its pickups to tuning keys, to tremolos, to even its neck, much of wich is available direct from the factory or from many of the aftermarket vendors catering to this iconic instrument. Factory improvements to this base model include a thicker bridge block for greater tone, a wider aray of colors, and a choice of maple or rosewood fretboards not available on other brands in this price range. This guitar can grow with its owner and develop into a stage ready performer with minimal changes. I bought mine about 5 years ago and have changed the pickups to an HSS setup. This guitar now compares favorably with Strats costing twice as much ,and was an excellent starting point for me as I am sure it will be for you. I would rate this guitar a great value and recommend it highly because of its initial quality, finish options, and upgradeable potential for the beginning musician.

Comments about Squier Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

When the guitar first arrived I took it out of the package and noticed two layers of plastic. The first one was easy to peel off however the second one took about 15 minutes to do so. The guitar overall has a great luck if you get the antique burst finish. Perfectly polished. However I noticed some crooked screws holding the pick guard to the guitar body. When I first started playing the guitar I noticed some fret buzzing. It was annoying at first but I soon got used to it. The guitar has a great deep brassier sound then my old Squier Strat affinity series guitar. I would highly recommend this guitar for novice to intermediate guitar players looking to find a good quality guitar for a good price. Being an intermediate level player, this was an excellent purchase. Also, I spent five dollars extra to get the guitar in 3 to 5 business days. This was an excellent decision because the guitar came and no later than 2 1/2 to 3 days by UPS. As my final verdict I'm giving this guitar a 3.8 to a 4.2 out of five stars.

Comments about Squier Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I wanted a good quality back up stratocaster at a good price. Everything about the guitar is nice except it is extremely difficult to tune, and has fret buzz all over the neck. Now I have to spend more money to bring it in and adjust the action properly. Thanks a lot Fender.

Comments about Squier Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar at far below MSRP. That said, MSRP would still have been well worth it. It is a fine instrument. Finish is great. Intonation/playability is nearly perfect out of the box. The neck is super-fast. I own several guitars and am proud to add this to my collection. Like all guitars, it has it's own unique sound(s). Love it.

I bought this as my first electric guitar. While the electronics on this strat may not be to the same quality as a made in mexico or american made strat, the sound is superb. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a standard style fender strat at an entry level price.

Comments about Squier Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Bought this guitar from the local music works shop and at first there no problems with playing it, but a week later i discovered a split in neck wood where it joins on to the body ( a guitar tech told me that this due to poor quality wood). This isn't good enough...i took the guitar back to the shop where i had purchased it from
and got myself a second hand jackson pc 3 for roughly around the same price and have had no problems!

The best least expensive electric guitar. PERIOD!

        By Limelight Underdog

        from Laguna Beach, CA

Comments about Squier Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought the red one with the maple neck. This guitar has 22 frets not 21 like the made in Mexico Fenders. It also has the good two point tremolo not the poorly engineered 6 screw like the others. I love the maple fret board the rosewood one is too porous and slows you down. It also has the better agathis body not the easily dented bass wood body on the other Squiers. It has the better machine heads as well. Pickups sound great and has great hardware. You will have to set the guitar up properly to your liking and change the strings. I put on a locking DiMarzio strap right away so I don't have any falling accidents. THIS GUITAR IS THE BEST KEPT SECRET FROM FENDER BY FAR!!! You'll have to order one because they are always sold out but trust me this is a keeper at an extremely affordable price. :o)

Had to raise action so I could whammy up and down in pitch. Switched strings. Plays awesome. Has a real Strat sound through my Peavey Valveking 20MH. Got mine discounted as it was on Sale at GC. I am really loving it. They really did not want me to buy it as it was a display model. This seems the only place with it in stock. Buy it before it is gone. I believe this is a future collectors item. A real GEM.
