I originally bought this guitar for my daughter to learn on, but I spend more time playing it than she does. It's a real bargain for the price. This really is a mini Strat, but you don't have to be a midget to play it. It fits my 7 year old perfectly, and I can play it too. It's small enough for little hands, but spaced out properly for larger hands. I haven't had to alter this guitar in any way, but I have considered changing the pickups. Fortunately, they are regular sized, unlike the rest of the mini's parts. This instrument would be great for Teaching your kid to play, travelling, or playing out if you like the short scale! It would even be fun for playing in the passenger seat on road trips.

When will I learn to NOT go by reviews on these sites?

I got this thing and right off the bat I could tell that the nut wasn't right. This isn't a "bone" nut, or even a "plastic" one. The thing on the guitar that I got feels like some kind of vinyl. The third string was absolutely dead. I removed the strings to make the slots a bit bigger and to TRY and round them out a bit. I also had to clean up the front and back of the nut as it looked like it was cut with a hacksaw with pieces of "whatever it is made of" sticking out of each string groove front and back.

Then comes the next problem: The neck tension is as loose as it can get without falling apart inside the neck (if that were possible). I tightened it up a bit and set the neck as best as I could until I could restring it.

Problem number three: The tuning keys on this thing are not even good enough to call trash. A few of them are so hard to turn that I was tempted to use pliers on them.

I got the neck tension set as well as possible after restringing. The nut is still a lost cause. whatever the soft material is that it is made from is going to keep grabbing the strings. It won't stay in tune. Not that any of that matters as again: The tuners are not even good enough to call trash. And it's not like you can just replace them. Anyone who has one of these knows that is not the case. Nothing fits this thing.

I forgot to mention that the output jack nut was ready to fall off. I will have to remove the jack plate and tighten that thing up.

I am disappointed. I bought this for my granddaughter to learn on. I don't see how my daughter is going to even attempt to tune this thing for her as I can barely turn the tuners myself.

If it weren't so close to Christmas, I would send it back. This is the worst purchase I have ever made from Musician's Friend in the many years I have been shopping here - and it just HAD to be a guitar for my seven year old granddaughter.

I think I am going to start buying locally. It might cost more, but at least you can see what you are getting.

Great Guitar for Kids

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar for my 11 yo daughter for Christmas. After some reviews I was worried that it would not meet my expectations but from a first guitar for a younger kid stand point it definitely did. The 3/4 guitar is much easier for my daughter to handle and play versus my Fender Strat. It is an affordable option that exposes your kid to the opportunity to learn the guitar. The mini doesn't sound good if you are playing it very hard as an adult or wheel house strumming it. I think if you are an adult or older kid another guitar in the Squier line-up would suit you better from a size and play-ability stand point.

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

This guitar is fun to play and sounds great. I bought it as a gift for my five-year-old, and I know she'll love it. Unfortunately there was a mark on the bottom that looks like black permanent marker, so it looks like I got a used guitar for the new guitar price.

Well I managed to get a set of vintage Kluson style tuners mounted on this thing, as well as some fresh tuners and a graphite nut... after a setup and some new strings I have to admit this little thing is a player

          Disappointed - Twice!

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

This is the second mini strat I've purchased. The first, about 8 years ago, was amazingly right on fresh out of the box. This one, destined for my youngest grandson, was a real disappointment. There was a chip in the neck and the first five frets rang so sharp it was unplayable. Even an intonation adjustment was no help. This one was a replacement for a different brand youth guitar that was also defective. Rather than take yet another chance I requested a refund rather than a third replacement.

It's worth mentioning that when you return a defective product for a refund two things happen: 1) you're charged for the "free" shipping you received on the product and 2) you have to send it back at your own expense. So for a defective guitar I'm going to be out of pocket around half the retail cost. This isn't the usual outstanding service I'm used to receiving from Musician's Friend. I get that for MF to pay the freight both directions is not right but it would have been fair to split the total cost.

I have this and love it, but I can't quite understand the bad reviews. I know that there is fret buzz but couldn't you adjust the nut or truss rod? That's what I did.

Comments about Squier Mini Strat Electric Guitar:

My original plan was to buy a Mini Strat, upgrade it, and then keep it around the place, just in case one of my grandkids happens to become interested in learning, and for when I travel. In fact, it's It's easier to travel with than my Larrivee Parlorchanged the tuners to the vintage Klusson style, replaced the plastic roughly hewn nut, with a 41mm Graph Tech, changed the strings from the 9's it came with to 11's, installed new string trees rollers, and changed the knobs out with some high quality chrome ones, which made a huge difference aesthetically. It looks and plays so well now, and I've since discovered that with the small size and scale, it's small enough for me to play while I'm lounging around or just chillin' in my recliner, which is difficult with my Tele or Strat. I guess I lucked out, for the Mini I purchased was surprisingly playable right out of the box. Other than the items I replaced as referenced above, I can't believe how good all three single coils sound. I had anticipatef replacing them, but nope. In fact the delineation of sound from the 5-way switch is clearer and more distinct than with my American Stat. The fit and finish is flawless, and the neck it's the silkiest that I've ever played that is unbound. A cool little keeper for sure!
