Awesome bass. Let me start out by saying that i've tryed and played anything from cheapies to pedullas. I bought this bass for my main 5 string bass because when i tried it out, i loved it. It looks like a bass that would cost at least 2 to 3 times the amount. I have big meat hooks and it is tough for me to play finger style on smaller basses. So i like the wide spacing at the bridge and at the nut. The ebonal frettboard is nice and tight. The pick ups sound amazing, the brightest i've heard. The active electronics and slap switch allow for such a wide tonal range. If set up properly you can get the action nice and low with the bass, very similar to the pedulla. It is very comforatble to play. Now the bad news. Watch out for the quality control. I recieved the bass and the stack was in the wrong control hole. And the 1st two pots, when you moved them they made a grinding noise over the amp.I unscrewed the back cover plate and readjusted the circuit board wich was jammed in there pushing against the pots causing the noise. I had to drill out the proper size hole for the stack in the proper position. Despite the normal lightness of basswood, The bass weighs alot, probably double what my schecter custom 5 weighs, and a good 2 lbs over my heavy swamp ash j-bass. Other than that, the bass Rocks. Just wish they made a frettless. An all around plus from me. Good luck.

At this price point, this bass is a steal for a "decent" 5'er, but has some drawbacks. You say your budget is around three times what this one costs? Then the Ibanez BTB675 is ready to go out-of-the-box. If you can live with The Squier's limitations, or are willing to spend the money to hot-rod/mod it, it is a good starter kit. It is one of the very few five strings with 19mm string spacing, the reason for my purchase. The Ibanez BTB is one other. Now that is out of the way, the critique: Pros: Nice neck. Jury is out on the "Ebonol" fingerboard Adequate pickups Low Price Cons: Cheap hardware (tuners, bridge) Fret sprouts Floppy B-string. A 35" scale STB will cure that. Advantage: Ibanez BTB. Gloss finish. I prefer satin Headstock is ugly, (IMO) Weight (10.5 lbs.) It's a Neck Diver, even with a 3" wide suede strap and of course, the strings are junk I have only owned this bass for a little over a day and played it for a few hours. Too many cons for me. Back to GC it goes. Thank you Guitar Center for your return policy! On the bright side, I have decided to just convert one of my 4 strings to BEAD tuning so I'll have a bass that is comfortable for the times when a low-B is called for.. and skip owning a 5'er altogether. Now to find someone to sell those G-strings to.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've had this bass for about two weeks and I love it!! I've been playing for about 30 years and have 9 other basses and this one rates right up there with the most expensive ones I own. The neck is fantastic and the action is great. the electronics are awsome and sounds wonderful on my recordings. don't let the squier name deter you, this is a very well built bass and you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass as my first five string. Love the way it sounds, i really like the active/passive switch. Overall, the bass sounds like it should of cost twice what i paid for it. I bought mine used. So I really feel like i got a deal. The ebony fretboard was a nice thing for such a value bass.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I needed to pick up a cheap 5 string and always wanted a jazz bass. Since I've gotten this one I've been nothing but pleased. The build quality is great and I love having 3 tone controls. As expected, I had to reset the neck bow and action when I got it home, but after that it plays great. One thing I especially like is that the string spacing is the same as a 4 string. That makes the neck rather wide but being a finger player, makes picking much easier. The neck also has a light satin finish so your thumb slides smoothly as you change neck position.I really like this bass a lot.

What an awesome bass this is!

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have had this bass for about 2 weeks now and am amazed by it's versatility. I have played 2 live stage shows and the variance in tones available from this bass are nothing short of fantastic. Great low end, solid mids and a popping high. I have previously used only Fender̴ P basses and don't know why I never tried a Jazz bass before, but this bad boy out performs all the Fender̴ instruments I have ever used. Seriously, whether a beginner or a seasoned pro, this instrument will give you any sound you desire. Don't be fooled by the Squier̴ name, it is simply a great bass by any standard. I just finished a studio session and had to run to the computer to write this review. The quality sound I got in the studio blows me away. When I needed silence, this baby delivered. When I needed quiet but deep tones, same thing. During the louder rocking sections this bass held up perfectly. If you are considering which bass to buy, look no further. This bass delivers, period!

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've owned mine for about 2 years now, and I still love it. This thing will bring the low-end. I play contemperary christian music, and we play sometimes 2-3 times per week. I set aside my USA Fender bass and have made this my primary bass. People can't beleive how good it sounds. Depending on the venue, I have a couple of amps that I use, both are Gallien Krueger, and this bass sounds great through 10's or 15's. This bass is huge and heavy but well balaced. I highly recomend strap-locks. The ebanol fretboad is great. After all this bass is played, the pots are still smooth and no scratyness in them. The negatives are the tuners could be smoother, and the overall finish is not what you would get with a more expensive bass. It's OK, but after 2 years of heavy use, the finish on the body is getting a little scratchy. That's OK though, It's a bass, not a peice of furnature. This is one of the rare times when I fell like this bass is underpriced. I would pay more for it. If you are econsidering buying a 5 string, I say buy this one.

You Should Go Try One Of These Out, Awesome Bass

By Gary Deardurff

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Before I stopped playing 20 years ago, I had 3 basses. Fender Jazz Bass Special, P-Bass, and a Memphis P bass. This bass guitar takes the place of all 3 I used to play. This bass is hooked to a Peavy Maxx 115 Combo Amp. I cannot believe what I here out of this setup every time I turn it on. This bass has great feel up and down the neck, and the selection of sounds that come out of this bass is awesome. I bought this in October of 2008 and will not need to buy another bass for any reason. If your looking for a bass that is priced right, plays very well, go to Guitar Center and test one out. You will not be sorry you tested this one out. Play on people....

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

First, let me say, WOW! This bass is really a unique bird, this bass has the feel of the big boys. I love neck and fretboard, great action and response...which ever style your prefer...this bass will ccommodate you. I did upgrade the pickups to Fender Jazz, to get that great fender tone. Don't get me wrong the tone was pretty good before the modification. The factory strings were pretty rough though. This is a great bass for the price...you will be pleased as I am.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass in the summer of 2008. I bought it online. I took a long time to make my choice and it was that final decision. This is the 1st I've owned but I've played for quite a while. The bass sounds wonderfull. After I bought it i went to guitarcenter(Boston&NewYork). And after playing all the big names from Warwick-Spector, the squier can be dialed in to both of their sounds. Save urself loads of money and buy this bass and an eq pedal. By doing this you can play any bass whilst on stage.

Great Bass

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I would have to say that this is a great bass. I just love it when I bought it the intonation was not of its is just great. This bass is great if you have big fingers like I do. Also you can get a lot of sounds with this bass and the active just completes this bass. Squire basses are just like having fenders. This is almost like having one. Honestly if you are going to get this bass i would recommend you get the black finish it is just beautiful and right now I am getting the white finish for my brother. So this is a great bass and you should buy it.

By Darryl "BIG D" From New Orleans

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Let me tell you. I entered the guitar center and started playing around with the basses hanging on the display wall. Wow! I began playing on this bass and I could not believe the feel, tone, balance and overall versatility. I purchased this bass the same day. I need to inform you guys that I have an unusual collection of basses. ESP, FENDER, K-SMITH,YAMAHA, AND MODULUS. I love this bass. I've not given it a break yet. The most amazing thing about this bass is that I've been playing bass for over 30 years and I do believe manufacturers make mistakes. This bass is worth it's weight in gold and the price is wrong. If you don't believe me, play one. I recommend that you buy one, before Squire learns about this little secret and decides to remove it from your fingertips or ask for more $$$ for it.

Buy this bass before it goes away

By Funktastic

from Beaumont TX

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've been playing metal and funk bass for 15 years. I would consider myself a pro musician. I always turned to Ibanez for my 5 string basses. I read about this Deluxe V in a Musicians Friend catalog and discovered that GC carries it for the same price. I played it and was blown away. I have the all mirrored black model. I traded my Ibanez SR505 and Ibanez SR300 doe this bass and I have been happy ever since. The string spacing is perfect, there is room to be articulate and fast. The sound ranges from warm to growling. The "slap mode" switch is perfect for me for instant mid-scoop. I lot of other basses have necks that crammed together especially towards the nut. This bass is comfortable, balanced, sounds great and easy to play. Even in drop "D" tuning in a standard tuned 5 string, I can do it all with ease. Therefore my Ibanez basses had to go. They being nice basses but that generic for the masses feeling kept bugging me. This particular bass is a bit on the heavy side so get a good strap but it stays in tune well, keeps it's intonation and everything is accessible to get to. I like my action low, this Deluxe gives and gives again. Being a 330 dollar Squire, you would a fool to pass this bass up if you want a 5 string. Active electronics, good controls, comfortable playing feel, good articulation between notes I can play in the style of Primus all day and switch to outright heavy metal without concern. Stop reading this review and buy the bass already. I don't like garbage basses, I've had enough of them in 17 years. This is truly a diamond in the rough.

this is the one?

By MARGARET PLUMMER

from baltimore, md

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

After several brands, several 4, 5, and six strings this it it? The squier line frustrated me so much with. when I got a good one,the pickups were too noise when soloed. I gave up on squier. I was gonna wait for income tax time and drop a boatload of $$'s on an American jazz v or a G&L or a Musicman. So one day in the GC I gave this one more try, since all i was Looking for was a backup to my Schecter elite 4 string. I wanted an alternate tone to the Schecter and I knew the Squier deluxe jazz sounded different. For some reason these guitars (dlx jazz squiers) never sounded or played right in the store but after all the ibanezes and fenders and schecters, an olp, a cort, a G&L, I huess my ears had had enough. so I set out for one of these and wow! This bass sets in the mix better than the schecter. better than all the others. at rehearsal I played through my carvin bx500 into a home made 115 + tweeter. I used an old Crate 100 combo as my cab and its dusty old 15" speaker with a tweeter out of who knows what (its a practice rig) and it completely impressed me. The Schecter through this same set up had me wanting to bring in one of my main cabs because it sounded so blah through the practice rig. But the squier dlx jazz v was perfrct. Fingering and slapping, and its a joy to slap. Just as easy to slap as any Fender 4 string. Do like me and get one as a back up and you'll end up like me, giggin' it instead of the expensive bass. so what next squier, how bout a 5 string version of the 60's jazz vibe. My favorite squier, or a six string version of this bundle of 5 string joy. Ok that might hurt Fender sales but hey go for it Squier.By the way this bass has no spaces between the neck and heal like the MIM jazz v I had. to be fair i got the MIM used in 10/12.It was an 07. But this squier really plays and sounds better than the '07 MIM v. the squier does hum but not like a passive jazz bass. Happy hunting!

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I purchased this bass about a year ago thinking it was a good buy but after I took it home I noticed it was hard to get a good tone out of it, it was also difficult to intonate the b string and it sounded muddy probably due to the basswood body, I did some research to discover it wasn't actually an ebony fretboard it was ebonol, a synthetic plastic designed to sound like ebony, continuing my research I discovered the fender pickups were very cheap for the pair from a licensed fender parts distributor, the only thing I liked about this bass was the electronic tone controls, similar wiring can be bought from the seymour duncan website, you would be better off checking the ESP website for a 5 string for less money AND better quality, every other guitar I own is fender or squier but this bass is my most regretted purchase as a musician, please look elsewhere

I gig every weekend with a corporate band. We average about 120 dates a year from this band alone. We play rock, country, jazz, pop, soul, blues, beach,RnB etc.......
I would have to say this is the best bass you can find in this price range. I bought mine used, so it might have already been setup but it plays like a dream and it has a lot of low tone but it also has a bite that's clear and punchy, it doesn't crack like the Ibanez BTB 5string neck thru maple one piece I had. This has to be the best bass I've owned in yrs so far. And I would compare this EVEN to the custom Peavey Cirrus 6 string bubinga wood custom shop I used to own for about $2K. This bass sounds and plays better than some basses way more expensive than this...... word.,....
