I bought the Squire Affinity Strat for my 11 year old last year because I wasn't sure about how serious he was about guitar. When we received it, I brought it to my guitar tech for a set-up. He told me not to bother as it was set-up perfectly right from the box! While I love my Semi-hollow Ibanez, this guitar has received tons of use from both my son and me. I'm flabbergasted about how much better this guitar is than the mid-70s American FENDER (not Squire)Strat I had years ago (which ultimately turned me off Fender for years). There is no way one can find a better guitar at this price. Ours has been dropped, played hard, and stood up to the treatment only a bunch of dreamer rocker kids could provide. Great action and neck (I prefer the maple neck on this guitar), hardware has held up well. Not a single reliability issue - just tons of dings, dents, and scratches. No, it isn't a $700 Fender, but it is better than most $300 guitars and we paid $150 for ours.

OK, so my review #'s are based off of what you get stock. What I really liked about this guitar is that it's thinner than a typical strat and lighter, plus I really liked the way the neck felt in my hands. Within a month the 5 way switch didn't work in positions 2, 3, & 4. 2 weeks of repairs. Got it back and a month after that the jack came loose. I didn't want to fix it again so I just bought the Gibson Les Paul Mahogony (which I recommend for any serious player on a budget). About a month ago I wanted to learn how to do mods on guitars, so I figured this cheap thing that doesn't work would be a good starting point. First off I shielded the pickguard and body cavity and threw some Vintage Noiseless pups in it and fixed the jack. WOW, did that make a difference. No hum, just straight up classic strat tone and no more jack problems. Also the sustain is excellent for how cheap it is. My bandmates couldn't believe it was the same guitar. Next I'm completely rewiring it from scratch w/ a black perloid pickguard and all vintage off-white knobs for the unique look I want. In short this guitar is great for the dad that doesn't want to drop a ton of $$$ into a hobby their kid may or may not enjoy. Or the budding modder looking for a great starting place to make some really unique looking (and more importantly, great sounding) customs.

A guitar that can grow with you

By Richard Sutterfield

from Denver, Co

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've been playing for over 40 years and really enjoy this guitar after installing a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail pickup in the bridge position. It's basically a humbucker that fits in the single-coil compartment. Install a mini-toggle switch or push-pull volume knob to switch it between humbucker and single coil, then you get noise canceling on two more settings of the 5 way switch, and very good clean and rock tones. It's an easy project and Guitar Center has everything you need, it will add great tones and make your Squier sound unique. You'll never want to sell that one.

A few minor problems but this guitar's amazing for the price

By James Wilson

from Sydney, Australia

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar one or two years ago as my first guitar and so far this little Indonesian made rocker is going strong without any major issues. The look is great; it's just like a Fender Strat. In fact if it had a neck with the Fender logo instead of the Squire logo then I reason people would be convinced it was a Fender just by looking at it. This guitar has a good low action and the pick-ups, even though they are pretty ordinary, can play all types of music including metal. It's a very all rounded guitar. But I wouldn't recommend this guitar or any other Fender style guitar for shredding or fast soloing as the neck is far too chunky for that. One of the most impressive things with this guitar is how solidly it's build. The thing's like a Russian tank! I've dropped it a few times, banged the headstock against my desk, let my friends (who have no idea about playing guitars) play it, strummed very aggressively, hit it in frustration and thrown it down on my bed and yet there's only been one tiny dent and no damage to the sound quality or nut or anything! It also stays in tune very well but don't use the whammy bar to much otherwise it will go out of tune quite fast. Even in the 1 - 2 year I've had it I've only had to change the strings once and it hasn't had a service. Mainly because no problems that would require a service have arisen since I've started playing it. Even though I bought this guitar for only $250 or so I think it's going to last a very, very long time. But even with the great features there are a few minor issues with this guitar. The tone knobs really do nothing. They act like they're not even there. Also this guitar has almost no natural tone and sounds quite steely sometimes. When turning the volume knob when the guitars plugged in you can hear a crackling sound come out of the amp. The B and G strings sound pretty tinny. That could be due to the strings themselves though. There are only two of the five pick-up selections that don't hum when selected. Now don't get me wrong here with these minor problems. For $250 or in guitar centres sites case, $180, you're not going to get a perfect guitar. There are going to be some slight problems. But I was actually really surprised with this guitar because without even a service there have been no issues that would make me stop playing and take it in to get fixed or serviced. I play for at least 40 minutes every day and I'm also surprised with how little wear and tear this guitar has had. I'd recommend this guitar to anyone who wants to start learning electric guitar and for people looking for an amp I'd also recommend the Laney LX 12. It's what I got when I bought this guitar.

Amazing! Almost Exactly Like the Real Thing

By Alex Bowen

from Lakeland, FL

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I purchased a strat from Guitar Center after my graduation. Well, I play it more than my other guitar. It's light weight and the weight is even, Great sound, and great fret board. Couldn't ask for more (except for an American Fender Strat. Come on who doesn't want one?) No problems, and stays in tune for weeks on end.

this is a toy.

By Evan B

from Glen Rock New Jersey

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

this is a hunk of plastic on a stick. The list of problems are endless, the pickups more or less are the worst pickups I've ever seen or heard. They make noise that you can hear from miles away. The neck feels like sandpaper. The tone knobs dont do anything. The 5 way switch BARELY does anything. It stays in tune, for about 5 seconds. The best part of the guitar is in the back. Under the pannel thing. Ther are some springs in there that are good. I out them in my real stratocaster to fluxuate the bridge. I'm 15, and this was my first guitar. I own an SG, a strat, and this. It is a toy and unplayable. Youre better off buying 200 chocolate bars. If youre a real guitarist and youre considering buying this, DONT. if youre a beginner, well I guess you could buy it. but I outgrew it in 5 months. buy a real strat, or a cheaper epiphone or something, it'll save you time if youre actually going to be good at guitar.the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is to experiment because every 1 star review I've written hasnt been posted.

Fun in so many ways

By Chuck

from Charlotte, NC

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have had 10 of these guitars of the years and they are so fun in more than one way. First they are a very good value to start with, second they are very true to the Fender name in quality and sound. These guitars are great out of the box, they are excellent once setup, and super once you start adding extra mods. I have had a lot of fun upgrading and customizing these guitars. They are perfect for a beginner, intermediate, and someone wanting to customize a guitar. I have a very expensive TRUE vintage guitar and find myself grabbing this guitar first every time!

Good for beginners

By Jake Choi

from McAllen, Texas

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

i got this guitar like 2 years ago and i still have it. Now i have Fender Blacktop Telecaster HH. which is way better than this squire strat. I started guitar with this cheap guitar. The distortion sound is not too bad, (if you just started playing, you wouldn't notice that it sounds not really good.) the clean sound is good enough. i liked the position 4 and 2 which makes sound like running in the circle or whatever. I dont really recommend this to the ones who already have been playing guitars. If you just started, who wants to get better at it, i recommend this for you guys.

Great guitar!

By Don

from Wheaton, MD

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've been playing the guitar for 40+ years and have a collection of professional quality instruments. I wanted something inexpensive that I could take to gigs and not worry about damage or loss. I just "knew" that this guitar could not be any good...'till I tried it! I was shocked and surprised at the tone and playablity of this instrument. What a great instrument for beginners, or for experienced players to take on the road without worrying! Squire . . . I'm guilty of judging before playing!

Great guitar

By Jeremy

from Englewood, CO

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

My Grandma bought this for me two years ago as a birthday gift. This guitar has a tone almost exactly the same as an actual fender. This is a great guitar for beginners, and is still my only electric guitar. It beats any othe guitar in the price range EASILY! As an intermediate/advanced guitar player, i still love playing this thing. I have the red finish with rosewood neck and it is a beauty. The foir stars is onlt because of the kind of high action, which can be adjusted. Buy this guitar. Also my bro has a cheap Epiphone, which is good (it's like the same price I think.) It is the Special II. If you are thinking about buying that guitar instead of this one DONT! This thing is three times better.

Great Value

By Bobo Adkins

from Wickliffe, Ohio

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I own 3 electric guitars. This one is by far the cheapest. My other 2 are both twice as much or more than this one. Having said that, this one plays and sounds the best. Regardless of taste or style, this is the best guitar I own. I have a Squier Thinline Tele and a G400 '66 LE Epi SG. This Strat (mine is Red w/ Rosewood fretboard) takes the cake. I also would like to add, that if you are just starting out, you probably want to go with a strat style guitar, as they are much easier to play and more comfortable. I love the way my SG looks, and it is my fav, but this baby is the easiest to play and sounds the best. I have had numerous seasoned guitar players (10 years or more that gig out) jam on this strat and they all had nothing but great things to say about it. Simply put, buy this guitar for the price, have it set up the right way (professionally is always a good idea for about $60) and you will be very happy with it.
