I bought the Squire Affinity Strat for my 11 year old last year because I wasn't sure about how serious he was about guitar. When we received it, I brought it to my guitar tech for a set-up. He told me not to bother as it was set-up perfectly right from the box! While I love my Semi-hollow Ibanez, this guitar has received tons of use from both my son and me. I'm flabbergasted about how much better this guitar is than the mid-70s American FENDER (not Squire)Strat I had years ago (which ultimately turned me off Fender for years). There is no way one can find a better guitar at this price. Ours has been dropped, played hard, and stood up to the treatment only a bunch of dreamer rocker kids could provide. Great action and neck (I prefer the maple neck on this guitar), hardware has held up well. Not a single reliability issue - just tons of dings, dents, and scratches. No, it isn't a $700 Fender, but it is better than most $300 guitars and we paid $150 for ours.

OK, so my review #'s are based off of what you get stock. What I really liked about this guitar is that it's thinner than a typical strat and lighter, plus I really liked the way the neck felt in my hands. Within a month the 5 way switch didn't work in positions 2, 3, & 4. 2 weeks of repairs. Got it back and a month after that the jack came loose. I didn't want to fix it again so I just bought the Gibson Les Paul Mahogony (which I recommend for any serious player on a budget). About a month ago I wanted to learn how to do mods on guitars, so I figured this cheap thing that doesn't work would be a good starting point. First off I shielded the pickguard and body cavity and threw some Vintage Noiseless pups in it and fixed the jack. WOW, did that make a difference. No hum, just straight up classic strat tone and no more jack problems. Also the sustain is excellent for how cheap it is. My bandmates couldn't believe it was the same guitar. Next I'm completely rewiring it from scratch w/ a black perloid pickguard and all vintage off-white knobs for the unique look I want. In short this guitar is great for the dad that doesn't want to drop a ton of $$$ into a hobby their kid may or may not enjoy. Or the budding modder looking for a great starting place to make some really unique looking (and more importantly, great sounding) customs.

Ye Olde Strat

By Mr.Whitetail05

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I purchased one of these babies a couple years ago as my first guitar. I have been playing for several years now and my playing ability has been steadily increasing and alot of that is because of this guitar. The pickups give great tone, the body style is famous, and the 5 way pickup selector is an excellent feature. Plus, for a strat, the price dont get much better.

My fav guitar

By Scuba Steve

from Massapequa, new York

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I own both a fender strat standard and this guitar. I love my squier I found it used at half price and bought it thinking maybe I'll find out what's so good about them. Once I started playing it at home I fell in love with it and abandoned my epiphone Les Paul. The guitar is more then what you pay for. I have found no flaws in it at all it actually has been holding up better then my fender. Now what you want to know fender vs squier. Fender the guitars thicker. The sound it produces is richer and like pin perfect (this guitars shallow) when plugged in the crisp sound of the fender does out rule the squier. That's the truth but The squier has the great squier feel. It plays as you would expect The pick ups aren't great but they work. I have never gotten fret buzz So if your not sure if you want a strat or wanna try a different style guitar with out putting a lot of money on the line this guitars for you. *one note if your not used to strats just to let you know the guitar picks up static when only one pickup is on This happens with all stratocasters and single coiled pickups And the reason I give it five stars is bec it does what it was made to so don't event expect this to be an experts guitar I would recomend this to anyone that wants to give learning guitar a chance and it's all fair play because the guitar doesn't fail to do what it's told -this guitars good for learning and just fun (one of my favorite parts about it is it's so cheap I bring it everywere with out worrying because it's strong and easliy replaceable) -another note is it's nothing like a epiphone or Gibson it's not easy to destroy its able to withstand a lot and the paintjob is amazing it just about never shows finger prints or gets dirty, I don't event have a case or anything half the time it's just against the wall or in other random places and it's fine Please comment any questions and rate -I'm not writing this for that money offer I just want the word out on this guitar and help out so you make the right choice-

Decent

By Paul

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar 9 months ago. Its still holding together nicely. But I would only recommend this to a beginner. Theres no unique sound quality and the 3 single coil pick-ups aren't good for my favorite style of music, metal. Yet, if your looking for a guitar that has a rock punk feel to it take this one. I really haven't had any problems with mine. It is worth the money.

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I got the squier for christmas of 2009 and i plugged it in right away. Im used to humbucking pickups, so the single coils were a change for me. But once i plugged it in it sounded great. The guitar plays with as much sustain as a higher end guitar. it stays in tune very well too. I would recommend 10. guage strings there lighter and sound great on the strat. its got versitility like no other guitar ive played before. i would recommend to anyone.

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

i got this guitar about a yr ago. and i play metal. this isnt the guitar to get. yeh its ok for starters. but if you play and you want to be serious with music. dont get this guitar. get a tele, or go get a epiphone. tis guitar buzzes liek hell. the wiring is super messed up. i own it and all it does is give feedback and cut out because it is not wired properly. i played a schecter the otehr day and fell in love nad realized how un comfortable this guitar really is.

Great For A Beginner Or To Customize

By Timmy The Rodfather

from ALLISON PARK, PA

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar back in 2005-got it in Metallic Red w/maple fretboard. It sounded pretty decent for an inexpensive axe,but I realized that sooner or later I would want to change stuff. Now,if you don't want to change anything, the guitar is perfectly fine for students or any beginner-level player. Everything on the instrument is of good quality for the intended budget, and it all works well and sounds well.Even the paint looks more expensive than it is.If you purchase the Fender guitar lesson DVD,you will notice that the teacher uses one in most of the lessons-and you should hear what he can do with it! But I am the type that cannot leave well enough alone,so I installed a set of Vintage Noiseless pickups,a three-ply Fender pickguard, and some vintage Fender knobs. My local guitar dude set up the neck and everything else after that. Now I have a great-sounding 1950s Strat Replica that cost less than half what a MIM Fender 1950s Strat would cost! Some of my friends have Squier guitars-they swear by them, and most of their guitars are not modified at all. Great product for the price-get one now......By the way,my Strat is still holding up well after two years and a lot of Dick Dale-style shreddin'.

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar in a strat pack a while back in january of '06 now back then i dident know a thing about guitars or playing so i put it off till june an then started learning...back then i dident think anything of it but now that im better im realizing what a terrible guitar it is, First of all it is meant for beginners but that dosent mean they have to make the neck soo uncomfortable, when you use any of the frets past 12 their very small and hard if you have large fingers, the bridge is impossible to adjust if you want to play comfortably lower the strings and they rattle at the top frets raise them to stop the buzz more uncomfort....the neck is thin but not flat enough, did i mention it buzzes like hell.....well the pickups arent bad, you can get a wide variety of tones along with the fender 15 g amp if your looking to play punk or also somthing on the clean channel........definitly not for metal Only buy this if you have no other choice, yesterday i tried a ibanez rg2ex1 and it was a dream to play, i dident know how comfortable guitars could be.....ohh but for in the price range buy a squier telecaster, i tried one and it was amazingly more comfortable to playt than a strat

Great Guitar, For Low Budgets

By dmooregilleys

from Jacksonville, Florida

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

OK, This is a copy of the American Stratocaster. It has all the characteristics of the classic but at a low price. I have found this guitar to be the higher end of low priced guitars. Make sure you find one on the wall that is well made as the quality varies on each Squire Strat Affinity Series. At least Fender is overseeing the devlopment. There are gems to be found. And you can always upgrade pickups, pots, tuners etc... Make sure you have it set up before you leave the store by a pro. I have made minor adjustments to mine. Pickups on this series guitar are not the greatest, the trem bar will throw you out of tune, but it's not a floyd rose either, just retune. Tone pots are of little value but I am opening up the pick guard to see if they are wired up correctly. Do not buy guitars at a pawn shops or flea markets if you just starting to play. They definitely need to be set up. The neck is great for small hands and actions can be set up reasonably low. Overall you can keep this one for years, upgrade, practice, and gig with it. Not sure how it will hold up with a seriously athletic guitarist on stage. You will need to buy a decent amp. The Fender Bullet works great with this guitar for practice. You will need a digital tuner for this guitar. It will drift some. Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings are cheap and work great. Change about every 3 weeks for moderate playing. Hey, you get what you pay for, but I have to say this guitar has held it's own with epiphone lp-100's. Definitely a beginner or itermediate players guitar. One note, no matter what priced guitar you buy, your playing is a reflection of yourself, not the guitar. After 25 years of playing, " If it sounds good it is good " no matter if it's marked made in China or USA.

Not too bad, really...

By kiddo

from Syracuse, NY

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

A LOT of people knock Squier for their cheap prices, strange manufacturing locations, and low-grade materials, but in all truth, the guitar's ain't half that bad. I've had mine for almost 3 years, and although I plug it in rarely, it still sounds okay. The paint hasn't worn, and it's remained durable even after droppings, several changes of strap locks, and a heightening of string gauges. The biggest problems, really, are that: 1) The input jack is really poor, but they don't cost much to begin with. Easy replacement. 2) Use of the trem bar for anything other than slight warbles makes the guitar go REALLY out-of tune. Besides that, it sounds pretty nice, it holds up better than you'd expect, and(without the trem bar) stays pretty much in tune. If you are a really good guitarist, you could get this thing to sound as good (or better) than instruments several times the price of this one.. the guitarist DOES make the music, you know, NOT the guitar.

Great Guitar. Worth Price

By Cam

from Woodstock CT

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I was looking at guitars when I came across this little beauty. I was short on money so this guitar seemed perfect. This guitar if very durable is very fun to play. My only complaint is the strings that the guitar came with were a little light and flimsy but i bought some heavier ones and it was perfect. Definitely a good choice for beginners or someone who is starting to get serious about playing.

SquieR Strat

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought this Strat 2 weeks ago and im pretty much stisfied with it. It is of good quality and affordable. However i recommend to everyone who buy this guitar to buy a pack of high quality strings as well, because the original ones are kind of poor. I've already broke one. But this is the only problem i had so far. I really recommend it to everyone who want a high quality guitar but dont want to pay a lot.

AWESOME STRAT!

By Joe

from Santa Barabara, CA

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar on Valentines day 2009 from my Dad. There are many influences that made me take up the Strat. Clapton, Henrix, Beatles, and Buddy Guy. I got it in the pack with an amp. I got black with rosewood fretboard. I have to say thhis thing rocks! If you want the Clapton sound though, put Fender Vintage noiseless pickups in it. It makes a huge difference. You can get the Layla, Woman, and Madern soud from this. This thing squeals. This puts my SG custom in the can. This is going to be my main guitar until I get a Fender. Overall, Great Buy!

Not what I expected

By Clone

from U.S.

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

As a Gibson/Epiphone player from the start, I've never had much respect for the stratocaster. I thought that the whammy bar was a nice sales gimmick and its bolt on neck, 21 frets, and odd input jack nothing more than a joke. So, when I went into the local pawn shop to pick up a guitar that I could just fiddle around with, I was kind of sad that the only thing in my very small price range was a black, 2007 squier affinity stratocaster. I fiddled around with it, paid for it, and took it home. I then plugged it in. When you have such low standards, you expect to be blown away. But this destroyed all of my low opinions. The whammy worked wonders; you really have to abuse it to put it out of tune. The bolt-on neck doesn't get in the way, in fact, the cutaway style makes it comfortable. The single coil pickups get a nice clean, although they don't get quite the same distortion as humbuckers. All in all, I would reccomend this to any starter, or intermediate in need of a beater. This guitar will take all of your abuse and walk away screaming for more. Although I still hold Epiphone in a higher regard than Squier, I definitely give Squier their props for desgning such a nice guitar at entry-level. If I can get great sound out of a used beater, you can surely learn on a new one. If you're just learning guitar, this would definitely make a nice starter piece. Keep on rockin'!

Great guitar!

By Don

from Wheaton, MD

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've been playing the guitar for 40+ years and have a collection of professional quality instruments. I wanted something inexpensive that I could take to gigs and not worry about damage or loss. I just "knew" that this guitar could not be any good...'till I tried it! I was shocked and surprised at the tone and playablity of this instrument. What a great instrument for beginners, or for experienced players to take on the road without worrying! Squire . . . I'm guilty of judging before playing!

DON'T LET THE PRICE FULL YOU

By wicktana

from Taylor, MI

Comments about Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Our Church has a pretty good band that plays on Sunday services. They sound real good when everyone is there. However, there are those times when someone who plays won't be at the Sunday morning service. The Fender bass we have with Ampex amp belongs to the Church. What we didn't have was an electric guitar to play if the regular player didn't show up. I saw a guy playing a guitar and it sounded really good, the brand said Fender. Little did anyone know he had taken a Squire Stratocaster, replaced the name Squire with the name Fender. When he told me what he payed for it I was in shock. Being the Minister of Music I approached the Deacon Board and asked could I get an electric guitar that belonged to the Church so that someone else could play it if the regular player was gone. When I told them that I was only going to pay around $150.00 for it, they were more than willing. Went to Guitar Center, bought this Squire Affinity Strat, then boough it back to the Church. We have other people such as myself who can play lead guitar but don't bring them because we never know when our guitar player is going to be gone. Long story short. This less than $200.00 dollar thinks it is a Fender higher priced model. It holds it's tune, the sound is great, several guys have played it and can't believe how cheap and well this guitar plays. This is a great starter guitar, or just a guitar to have. If I were to blind fold you very few people would notice the difference between the Squire Affinity Strat, and my much higer priced American Fender Delux Stratocaster. Just try it, you have nothing to loose and you don't have to tell any one what you payed for it. Most people who use it thinks it cost way more than what I gave for it. The looks are great, and the sound is pleasing enough for any one. We play it over an Ephiphone combo guitar with built in effects. You will never find a guitar under $200.00 dollars that sounds as well as this.
