I played guitar when I was a kid, for about 10 years. Nothing serious, just wanted to play songs from my favorite metal bands, and jam with my friends. Eventually I sold my electric equipment to a buddy for his Tejano band, and moved on. ----

Couple years ago, after nearly 15 years, I pulled my old acoustic out of storage and started picking at it again. Really enjoyed myself with it in my hands, and now that I'm older I have the discipline and patience to really concentrate on building a stronger foundation to get real satisfaction out of playing and learning. I decided to take the next step to electric and, after a fair amount of looking around, I settled on this starter kit. It's a low investment/high personal payoff combo for sure. Had it for about 6 weeks now. I've been impressed with the whole thing. It's light, but not flimsy and doesn't feel cheap. Very comfortable to hold, solid construction. I love the feel of the neck, my hand glides on it. Never liked the lacquered neck on my old Kramer, especially on humid days or in hot places. It stuck. -----

Tones and sustain are pretty nice, again in context of this being an entry-level guitar. I love the humbucker on its own for most playing. Action is wonderful, it doesn't need much pressure on the strings to get the full, rich notes you want. It was pretty much ready to go right out of the box, though I did change to better strings after a few hours. Stays reliably tuned once new strings are worked a little. It has all the warmth you'd expect from this style of guitar. I'm debating about changing the neck pickup and maybe the tone pots. -----

I used a Fender amp before, and I like this one. Sounds familiar, warm. Really, though, it's a practice amp and does all it needs to do well. I've got a chain of effects - chorus, metal and fuzz - and they each sound good coming through it.

Beginner beware advice… An opinion, from a total beginner… I bought one of these about a month ago and I wish I still had the box so I could return it. For the record, there is nothing wrong with the quality of this guitar. It's a great buy, especially, if you are set on a Stratocaster. My issue is, that for something being marketed as "beginner's guitar", I have not found it to be very beginner friendly. Here is why… When I was first researching between which of guitar kit to buy, the Squier Strat, the Squier Telecaster (or the Epiphone Les Paul kit), I really didn't know anything about technique and where one needs to place their picking hand for support. (because of my inexperience, all I did was hover over the strings and strum, when comparing the 3 guitars in the store,) After a few weeks of lessons, however, I have come to discover that there is no "comfortable" place to rest your picking hand, when you need to support it. Especially, for someone just trying to learn. The teachers I have asked and tutorials I've watched all say, the best place to rest your hand is on the bridge. (when not strumming.) But, on this guitar, the bridge is set so far back, (because of the humbucker pick-up), that it makes resting your hand for single string picking very awkward. I went back to Guitar Center to see if there was a difference with a more "experienced" eye and the difference is quite profound. While I was there, I asked about trading the Strat in for the Telecaster version, but they said without the box, they would only give me between $30 and $40 towards a trade in. I know everyone is different, and some people may prefer their hand to be so far back, but my advice to any newbies…Before you purchase this guitar, you might want to compare and try out picking single strings with your hand resting on the bridge (with a pick) on the Telecaster version or Epiphone Les Paul kit after trying it on this guitar first.

Good starter pack for beginner

By Felix Roces

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

I'm a beginner guitar player and bought this because I wanted to have everything in one package. It all came in one big box and I was really impressed with the finish of the guitar and the quality of the amp. I have a friend who is an experienced electric guitar player who also regularly plays with his band and had him look at the guitar and amp and he could not find any flaws with it. He tuned the guitar and checked all the frets and played songs with it and concluded that it is indeed a good starter guitar. I purchased the one with the Tobacco Sunburst and the finish was nice. It felt heavy compared to my Yamaha acoustic but playing it was comfortable. If you're a beginner and want to get started with electric guitar, I think this pack is the way to go. Really happy with my purchase and have started on my way to learning electric guitar :-)

Squier Affinity HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack w/ 15G

By Michael Conner

from Salem, Oregon

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

I am a beginner and have looked for the right starting Guitar. I believe I found it with this package. The Guitar is clean and fit, and has many sound options. It is easy to play chords, as the strings are close the the fret board. The look is awesome and most my friends can't believe it wasn't a more higher priced guitar. The Amp is perfect for me, and gives me that rock~n~roll feel just when I pick a few strings. I actually priced out the guitar and amp separately, and could not beat this price. I paid a visit to the Guitar Center in my town, and they were all very helpful and eager to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase. All in all, I am very happy with this package.

My first electric guitar

By Henry Branham

from Charleston, SC

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

I just got this guitar over the weekend. I have been playing an Ovation acoustic for about a year now and wanted to try an electric guitar. I chose the sunburst model. I got home and set up the guitar in short order. The tuner provided does a decent job and was easy to use. The amp is a decent amp and the action seemed to be just right out of the box. The strap is ok, but I am using the one I bought for my Ovation instead. The finish and build of the guitar is quite frankly amazing for $250.00 The whammy bar screws right in, but I have left if off for now until I get comfortable with the guitar. Pictures dont really do justice for how nice the guitar really looks. It is very easy to play and I like how easy it is to use all the controls. I plan on keeping this guitar for quite a while and will eventually upgrade the pickups and tuners. Right out of the box I give this 5 stars. Buy it, you wont regret it.

Squier Affinity Guitar Package with 15G Amp

By Janet Rotz

from Dyer, Indiana

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

I just purchased this package yesterday and I am more than pleased. This was much better quality for the price than I ever expected. I got the candy apple red which is a gorgeous color. It came with a Fender case, tuner, picks and all you had to do was tune it, plug it in and get started. The DVD was very helpful and I ordered the full length one for more lessons and information. I was concerned about the sound or if there would be trouble with feedback on the amp but it is crystal clear and plenty of sound adjustments. All the good reviews I read were true and I'm glad I based my choice on them and I knew Fender was a good name brand. This guitar is easy to play because the strings are close to the frets and it is a nice size, not too heavy. I have played guitar for years but have only learned the basics and plan to do some more serious study. This guitar package is exactly what I was looking for.

    Work of Art!

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

I've been playing for about a year and I borrowed my friends Squier Strat with a rosewood neck and I noticed that I needed an electric of my own. I tried out some telecasters, except the ones I liked were out of my price range, same with the other stratocasters. So I read some reviews and got this. Best decision ever! After I took that HSS strat hooked it up to the amp with a boss tremolo pedal running in between the guitar and the amp it sounded like magic. The electronics are solid the neck is smoother or just as smooth as any fender I've played it looks great in the sunburst and it's decently light. I'd recommend this thing to anyone who just wants a strat or wants to start playing electric.

I purchased this combo and couldn't be happier. I also showed the guitar to two of my friends, one who has played for over 40 years and has a number of fine guitars (including a genuine Stratocaster) and both couldn't believe the quality in this instrument for the price I paid. Both said it was very playable and had great tone.

The Best Thing For a Beginner

    By Brad Bacha

    from Streator, IL

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

The guitar is perfect for all kinds of music and is great for some ones first guitar, stays in tune well. had it for about a year and its taken a few spills and the paint hasn't chipped or any thing. The guitar is worth the cost of the whole pack. the amp is not anything special but is loud enough to jam with someone with drums. the tuner is reliable and small enough to be taken anywhere. The guitar cord is cheap and you should plan on getting a new one. But still a great guitar for beginner.

    Great For Beginners!

    By John

    from New York

Comments about Squier Affinity Series HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack with 15G Amplifier:

When I unboxed this in candy apple red, i was speechless. It looked amazing. My parents bought me this for Christmas and I still love it. It's great for any type of rock due to the humbucker at the bridge. The amp is pretty nice, just dont make the mistake like me of but up the volume to 5 and strumming it hard. The volume is really powerful and i usually keep it in between 1 and 2. Anyway, after about eight months of jamming with this, i bought myself another guitar to put thicker strings on. The only cons with this guitar is that the lower the tuning, the more drastically it comes out of tune and the fact that this guitar doesn't come with a stand or manual. Also, make sure you have a cloth to clean this guitar, as the glossy black pickguard show all sorts of dust. And with the pick that I use, it gets grinded into a reddish dust, but not much of a problem. Another thing is that it is easy to restring.
