I played guitar when I was a kid, for about 10 years. Nothing serious, just wanted to play songs from my favorite metal bands, and jam with my friends. Eventually I sold my electric equipment to a buddy for his Tejano band, and moved on. ----

Couple years ago, after nearly 15 years, I pulled my old acoustic out of storage and started picking at it again. Really enjoyed myself with it in my hands, and now that I'm older I have the discipline and patience to really concentrate on building a stronger foundation to get real satisfaction out of playing and learning. I decided to take the next step to electric and, after a fair amount of looking around, I settled on this starter kit. It's a low investment/high personal payoff combo for sure. Had it for about 6 weeks now. I've been impressed with the whole thing. It's light, but not flimsy and doesn't feel cheap. Very comfortable to hold, solid construction. I love the feel of the neck, my hand glides on it. Never liked the lacquered neck on my old Kramer, especially on humid days or in hot places. It stuck. -----

Tones and sustain are pretty nice, again in context of this being an entry-level guitar. I love the humbucker on its own for most playing. Action is wonderful, it doesn't need much pressure on the strings to get the full, rich notes you want. It was pretty much ready to go right out of the box, though I did change to better strings after a few hours. Stays reliably tuned once new strings are worked a little. It has all the warmth you'd expect from this style of guitar. I'm debating about changing the neck pickup and maybe the tone pots. -----

I used a Fender amp before, and I like this one. Sounds familiar, warm. Really, though, it's a practice amp and does all it needs to do well. I've got a chain of effects - chorus, metal and fuzz - and they each sound good coming through it.

Beginner beware advice… An opinion, from a total beginner… I bought one of these about a month ago and I wish I still had the box so I could return it. For the record, there is nothing wrong with the quality of this guitar. It's a great buy, especially, if you are set on a Stratocaster. My issue is, that for something being marketed as "beginner's guitar", I have not found it to be very beginner friendly. Here is why… When I was first researching between which of guitar kit to buy, the Squier Strat, the Squier Telecaster (or the Epiphone Les Paul kit), I really didn't know anything about technique and where one needs to place their picking hand for support. (because of my inexperience, all I did was hover over the strings and strum, when comparing the 3 guitars in the store,) After a few weeks of lessons, however, I have come to discover that there is no "comfortable" place to rest your picking hand, when you need to support it. Especially, for someone just trying to learn. The teachers I have asked and tutorials I've watched all say, the best place to rest your hand is on the bridge. (when not strumming.) But, on this guitar, the bridge is set so far back, (because of the humbucker pick-up), that it makes resting your hand for single string picking very awkward. I went back to Guitar Center to see if there was a difference with a more "experienced" eye and the difference is quite profound. While I was there, I asked about trading the Strat in for the Telecaster version, but they said without the box, they would only give me between $30 and $40 towards a trade in. I know everyone is different, and some people may prefer their hand to be so far back, but my advice to any newbies…Before you purchase this guitar, you might want to compare and try out picking single strings with your hand resting on the bridge (with a pick) on the Telecaster version or Epiphone Les Paul kit after trying it on this guitar first.
