A Capable Strat at a Toy's Price
Let's look at these Squiers objectively. Each example is different. Most will need a setup, which requires intonation adjustment as well as string height adjustment. Some might need minor fretwork, taking care of sharp edges etc. However, these minor tweaks will yield a very playable guitar that is tons of fun for the price.
The pickups aren't fantastic but I've been able to use the stockers with great success. The guitar is very playable once you make all necessary adjustments (a tech could do all of them for less than $50).
I've been playing for years now and still get a kick out of some of the "cheap" guitars being made now, as they're very competent instruments. For a beginner, these are great as long as you take note of anything that needs tweaking and get it handled. If being purchased as a gift, I would order ahead of time and take the guitar to a competent store and have them do a setup and just take care of any sharp fret edges, this is to prevent the new guitar's owner from possibly being disappointed-or if they're new to the guitar, giving up because the guitar doesn't play very well.

Good Guitar
I bought this guitar three years ago and haven't had any problems. I reserched this guitar before buying it. My squier looks and sounds great. Every thing works on it,including both tones. It's in the cherry sunburst finish and it has an alder body. The neck is also good, the only thing I would change on the neck is I'd make it a little thicker. I love this guitar and plan on keeping it. Again it has not giving me any problems with sound, tuning,or hardware.I,ll leave in the gigbag for over a week, take it out and do some minor tuning and I'm good to go. This has been a great guitar for me and well worth the money. So over all great for rock & roll, blues, country and pop,but not for grung, heavy metal ect. Because of the single coil pickups.

I don't know what the point is...
...of calling this Squier Guitar a "SQUIER." It plays exactly like a Fender. I have a P-Bass too, and I can't tell the difference between the Fenders and the Squiers, except for when I'm looking at the headstock...It's wonderful.

Affordable, good sounding, great lookin' guitar!
I purchased this guitar a couple years ago, although mine is a champagne goldish color rather than the red one above, but let me say, this guitar has held up amazing! Anyone who says Squiers are too cheap to be good is either lying or doesn't know the first thing about guitars. This guitar has a pretty fine sound, and the only work I ever had to have done on it was when it slipped from my grasp and hit my metal bed frame, but nothing has ever broken on its own.
My only problem is that the low E string, and the A sting rattle when you pick them, unless you pick lightly, but that is a very recent thing.
This guitar fits comfortably on my thigh, and since this guitar is relatively lightweight, so you can carry it around in a case, or on a strap, no problem
If you are in the market for a beginners guitar, or just an inexpensive one, go for this one, they look good and are built even better. Fender makes great guitars, and this one is no different, it may say SQUIER on the headstock, but its all Fender. (if you're also lookin for a good beginners amp, check out the 15 watt Squier one, it sounds good for the amount it costs.)
