  • More than meets the eye, a STEAL OF A DEAL!

As reviewed by Donald Freggens on 10/25/2013

Bought and delivered within 4 days from local GC. Perfectly packed, even came with Allen wrenches. Playable out of the box but slight bow in the neck. Had my guitar guy tweak it but I played it two days before bringing it. Man, even with 9's it is sweet sounding. Replaced with tens, much better. FIT-Neck fits tight to body. This is not a low end beginner Squier. I never would have considered a Squier before, and to be honest, I don't get why Fender has not released this model under the Fender name. Maybe down the road. Still I'm not bothered by it being Squier. Feels like a quality instrument, like the MIM tele I sold. FINISH-it is butterscotch, some folks mentioned uneven application where you could see thru the finish, not mine. It's yellow orange more yellow and well, butterscotch, not like the affinity tele Squier carries that's almost orange. But I like it. NECK-not typical little tele dogleg neck. No, this is beefier, almost like a Les Paul, or an acoustic, so still getting used to that. The tint is so nice, blends so well with the butterscotch body. Love the headstock, not 70's platform shoes large, not underdeveloped strat size. Just right. And not sticky, smooth to run up and down. Tuners are old school keep it in tune pretty well and I bend the life out of the strings. BRIDGE/Electronics-bridge seems sturdy, I like the feel of the brass barrels on my hand, nothing sticking up to shred skin. Far as intonation, maybe I'm going deaf in my advanced years, but I'm not hearing anything out of whack even at the high points of the neck. Barrel adjusters are two strings on each. If it's an issue, replace with compensated or six, but no ding for me there. Pick up switch feels smooth as do the mini pots (I've no idea why minis were used, I assume mine has them as others have stated but I've not taken screwdriver in hand). I feel I can blend volume and tone more now than with the MIM I had honestly, as opposed to the sound being faded. JACKPLATE-technically, it's a cup, seems well fitted, if it comes out, I will replace cause really, it's minor. PICKUPS-what you really wanna know, how it sounds. Bridge-hotter, grittier than my MIM, and I thought that pick up was hot. The Squier has classic tele twang distorted or clean, it's nice. Happy there. Mid-also that classic mysterious mid sound, great for picking, jazz, clean, Distinctive Tele sound. Neck-both pick ups are Duncan designed, which means mass produced overseas for cost cut as opposed to mass produced, um, wherever Duncan mass produces not overseas. This pickup is based on a Jazzmaster pickup, so it's warm on clean, pretty good for rhythm. I kept spec ting it to go all humbucker on me when I dialed in more distortion. Instead, it got more murky and flabby. But, I have been listening to this wrong. Play with gain, volume, mid, bass, if you have on your amp and you'll hear it's voice come in. It has some punch but if you want Judas Priest, you got another thing coming. Yes, I just wrote that. Or, get a distortion pedal for that. It will play blues country rock, classic rock very well. Also, I don't feel the need to shield it as others mentioned. If your too close to your amp, you'll get hiss, like two cats over a food dish. WEIGHT-I didn't weigh it, I mean It feels like a SOLID, QUALITY INSTRUMENT, what does weight matter? It's not like I'm taking it on a 5 mile hike. Put it this way, les Paul, heavy, others, not. UPGRADES-I think down the road, maybe, maybe, tuners. If the electronics go bad, sure. No need for that orange or bumblebee tone cap. Probably, frets, only because I will play this gem a long long time. Complaints-Only gripe is no store near me had one to try out. So I was nervous buying without trying. Take it from me, this guitar is a deal and a steal at double the price. Lastly, would it stand up to the road? Never having been, I can only speculate. This instrument seems as well built and study as the two MIMS I had before maybe more so since it has a bigger neck. I would advise against going all London Calling on it, like I would with any guitar, but to me, yea, it's ready for the bar stages and stadiums of your future.

  • Great guitar!

As reviewed by Mike Hensel on 4/1/2013

I bought this guitar because I was looking for something unique and in the Fender brand. I decided to go with the modified version instead of the traditional Squirer because of the upgrade in pickups and the neck. I got the blonde white version and it looks and plays great. Love the sounds and the neck is sweet. Great guitar for the price.

As reviewed by skip peyre on 2/20/2013

This guitar is GREAT !!! Right out of the box it was perfect. The frets needed no work and the pickups kick butt. The tuning machines work very well and the finish is real nice. I installed a Hip Shot B Bender and now I have the PERFECT KICK BUTT GUITAR !!!!
