  • This is a SQUIER?!?!?

As reviewed by David on 4/7/2015

I was shopping for my next bass recently and REALLY wanted a Fender branded Jazz Bass, since I have a Squier Vintage Modified '70's Jazz. I wanted something with a 1960's look to it. After a trip to my local Guitar Center, I tested the Fender MIM Jazz in Sunburst and hated it. It felt unfinished and I didn't like the sunburst one bit. Anyway, After a disappointing James Johnston signature bass, I figured I would play it safe and get the Squier Vintage Modified Sunburst Jazz Bass, since I was debating getting one when I got the '70's Jazz. I wasn't disappointed in the least. Squier has really stepped up the game. I look at this bass, and keep thinking of the sunburst Fender American Standard I wanted some years ago. The finish is FLAWLESS. The frets are dressed perfectly. The sound is outstanding. i always figured Squier is that "entry level" instrument but if I was in a band, I would gig with it. It is just the right weight, right sound right everything. The Fender MIM Jazz I tried sounded muddy.. the Squier sounds like a Jazz Bass should (in my opinion). Crisp, clean, deep. I'm going to throw some Rotosound Swing Bass 77 Flats on it, as well as chrome pickup covers for that 1960's surf look. My ONLY complaint... those chrome knobs. It detracts from the FENDER look and makes the bass look like a cheap generic knock-off. I replaced those straight away with REAL Jazz Bass black knobs. To sum it up... don't waste your money on a $600 Fender Standard Jazz Bass. This Squier blows it away for less money.

  • Don't Let The Brand Name Concern You

As reviewed by Nick Bell on 9/18/2013

For most of my life, I've avoided Squier products. But I tried this bass one day and fell in love, and immediately acquired it. It has amazing sound and quality, comparable to higher end Fender Jazz basses. No one could believe it was a Squier. I can achieve any sound I'm looking for, from rock, to punk, to metal, and obviously, jazz. I highly recommend this bass to any bassist, even those that have been playing for years.
